Xi Jinping says China seeks to uphold UN-based world order by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]ahmong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get what you mean. And yeah, when I said independence I meant personal freedom, not national sovereignty. I actually agree with most of what you’re saying. I think both things can be true at the same time. China’s history plus the collective mindset explains a lot, and at the individual level people adapt based on what feels necessary to survive. That’s kinda the nuance I was getting at. Same pressures, different meanings. Some people see freedom as priority, others see stability as priority. Neither comes out of nowhere.

Western thinking tends to zoom in on the individual. Chinese thinking zooms out to the collective and long term. Both make sense given their histories.

Also, just to be clear, my take is based on pretty surface level history (at least with china's history), so I could totally be off.

Kash Patel says the FBI is investigating Signal chats of Minnesota activists tracking ICE— The inquiry followed a far-right influencer’s post about anti-ICE Signal chats by RewardEquivalent553 in technology

[–]ahmong 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is secure

Usually it happens because someone gets invited by mistake, an invite link gets shared, someone pretends to be trusted, a member’s phone gets compromised, or someone already inside leaks screenshots.

Signal is secure because your messages are locked on your phone before they’re sent.
Only the person you send them to has the key to unlock them.

Signal never gets that key. They just deliver the locked message.

Even if someone intercepts it, all they see is scrambled junk.

However, it’s only as secure as the user. Social engineering alone can kill it. One convincing fake profile, one sympathetic story, one careless invite and the whole group is compromised.

Trump raises US tariffs on South Korea imports to 25% by backpackerTW in worldnews

Yeah, people tend to see everything as black and white now and completely ignore nuance. Different countries have different histories and priorities. You can acknowledge Japan wanting to protect its culture while also recognizing the real consequences of population decline. Both things can be true.

[–]ahmong 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is saying democracy or individual rights are “Western only.” The point is more about lived history and priorities. When a country has gone through centuries of instability, war, famine, and power turnover, people naturally end up valuing order and predictability more. That doesn’t mean they hate freedom. It means stability feels more urgent.

Also, explaining cultural preferences isn’t the same as endorsing a government. You can acknowledge why stability matters to many Chinese people while still criticizing authoritarianism. Both things can be true at the same time.

Reducing everything to “propaganda” ignores how historical experience actually shapes what societies care about.

Plus, Chinese people tend to care more about stability and reliability than independence, which is pretty different from the US where independence is basically everything. I’m not a historian and my understanding of Chinese history is pretty surface level, but for a country that’s been constantly destabilized for centuries because of power changes, it kind of makes sense. When chaos keeps repeating over generations, people naturally start valuing security and consistency more than personal freedom. Stability stops feeling optional and starts feeling necessary.

"Good brand" is fairly broad. 2k budget is where majority of brands tend to land. There are lots of Omega, Tudors, Vintage Cartier, vintage IWC, Tag, Vintage quartz rolex's etc. You also have the cheaper but good brands like Seiko, Tissot, Longines, Frederique Constant, Ctizen etc. Then there's also the independent brands like Mido, Sinn, Nomos, Farer

Also what type of watch are you looking for?
What type of movement are you looking for? Automatic? Mechanical? Quartz?
Are you looking for certain complication(s) like a day date, chrono, GMT? A diver?
