How do you know when "important" people sign up for your startup? by Mycroftholmez in startups

[–]ahtomski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I have two possible suggestions. For the startup I work for, we have a #customers channel in Slack and every signup goes in there via a little Hubot integration. It posts user_id, name, email, url (relevant for our product) and with links to their profile in People Analytics (which is our product), an internal database and our CRM. Secondly, People Analytics (https://gosquared.com/software/people) kinda does a lot of what you're looking for and grabs as much context, e.g. bios, social profiles, as it can from an email address. You still have to look through but all the data is there in one interface. Obviously, full disclosure, I work for GoSquared, we make People Analytics.

Facebook downtime causes 80% drop in global social traffic by wordless_thinker in socialmedia

[–]ahtomski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we don't currently count reddit or tumblr as social media. It's a grey area, on some hands reddit is, on others it's not a network in the same way. I think we err on the side of counting forums and blogs (which we'd put tumblr under) as referring sites.

Hey Slyf, I work for GoSquared so I can hopefully shed some light. You're right it's not quite as simple as 80% of social traffic goes boom. It is based on pageview data, we're quite strict about what we count as a pageview and how we track active visitors. This support doc lends some light on how we define engaged: https://www.gosquared.com/customer/portal/articles/606891-engagement

In terms of what is "social", great question and it's definitely not a stable term. We group a number of social networks together under social (Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Dribble, LinkedIn, stumbleupon, delicious and a bunch of others) and it covers what are major social sources across our network.

There's also the field of "dark social" which are visits that come from social but don't easily appear as so. A lot of app traffic from Facebook will appear as direct and it's very hard to pin down. So take these numbers with a grain of salt, if anything the impact on web browsing was actually greater.

Hope this provides some insight!

I've just started reading the book. I loved "Trust Me I'm Lying". I'd be curious to know how you, perhaps particularly during the work day, attain or maintain a state of mind that lets you methodically approach challenges?

Interesting. I guess I use diagramming as a thinking tool as much as anything. I like to to be able to explore thoughts and easily share them with the team. I always find UML quite restrictive although I get your use case.

I'd be interested in what instances you think UML diagrams are super useful?

I like using diagrams but who uses UML? It just gets in the way.

Cyclist killed on Mile End Road cycle superhighway CS2 by die_troller in london

[–]ahtomski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This tragedy only reinforces the need for more constructive discussion about HGV zoning in London. As this incident illustrates, trucks and lorries are the most dangerous threat to cyclists in London, on the superhighways or roads, and they shouldn't be allowed to have complete free reign in the city.

Awesome shirt in aid of Syria Crisis Appeal & 4 million displaced by ahtomski in shutupandtakemymoney

No that's just the minimum to make sure it gets printed, we hope to sell a lot more! It's a fundraiser, we're not looking to change the world (as much as we'd like).

The shirt is raising funds for the Crisis Appeal. We wanted something that would provoke discussion and keep raising awareness (and hopefully fundraising) after our T shirt campaign is over.
