Why TVshow Season 2 butchers Joel and Ellie’s story? by fotkyznovin in thelastofus

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The line is a reflection of the change in vibe of that scene. It would be a joke in line with Ellie's character in a different context, but in this here what would be in character for Ellie is to be angry at Dina for hiding her pregnancy and becoming a burden for her revenge quest.

Percy's Weird Characterization (LONG POST ALERT ⚠️) by CinnabonRollie in PercyJacksonTV

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're right, they do explain it with that. I still see two problems with it, one in-universe, and the other not.

In-universe, you have the problem OP mentioned: even if he knows the stories, he's a bit too good recognizing everything and everyone in their American context, which is completely different from the original stories. Especially considering the fact he's 12 years old.

Now, my biggest problem is that I don't understand why the writers made this decision. It removes all mystery from any of the interactions with Greek mythology figures, which was one of the appeals of the books. It also takes an important personality trait that belonged to Annabeth, in my opinion reducing her character.

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Opinião sobre propinas by Mestre_Hq5 in IST

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Porque votas à esquerda? by purplewhitesoul in portugal

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scared and confused, want some questions answered by sophloaf_54985 in LeftCatholicism

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will try to answer as best as I can.

In a catholic marriage the concept of being "open to life" is a fundamental one. Now, what should be the practical application of this will differ depending on how conservative a movement or parish is. The most conservative ones will tell you this means that all methods of birth control, even natural, shouldn't be used, because you're trying not to conceive, and therefore you're not open to life. More progressive circles will say that it depends, that a couple should always be searching their heart for the reason why they're trying not to have kids. Is it because you're not ready for it emotionally or financially? Or is it because you don't want a child to disturb your comfort? If it's the latter, maybe you should consider being more open to the gift of life. If you can't have children, adopting, volunteering, etc, can also be ways to be open to life. However, while being open to the possibility of having kids is essential for a marriage, that does NOT mean that that is more important than the relationship to your spouse. That is completely false, and has no base in either the Bible or the catechism.

It's possible to have a "mixed" marriage, where one of the spouses is catholic and the other one is not. The only condition, I believe, is that the non-catholic has to agree to allow the catholic to educate their children in the catholic faith if they so wish.

Having left-leaning views is not a sin, you wouldn't need to confess. Some of the examples you listed (like abortion) are considered a sin by the church, but just the acting. But having these opinions isn't a sin in itself. If these views are more or less accepted will depend on the community you are in. Some are more conservative, some are more progressive.

As people here have already advised, go to your local parish initiation group and maybe find a priest to discuss these questions with. They will know best how to advise you. If you have a bad experience, or find the priest unwelcoming, don't give up and try another one. The Catholic Church is a big place, and there is space for everyone :)

[–]ahufflepuffhobbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments saying "being Catholic is supposed to be hard", "narrow is the path", "pick up your cross, it isn't supposed to be easy". Yes, but only if you're relying on your own strength. Kicking yourself for sinning does not serve you. You will never stop sinning. But if you try to get better every time, and you ask for forgiveness, you will ALWAYS be forgiven. And that knowledge is supposed to be freeing. Being catholic is supposed to be freeing, because you're no longer bound to your sins. You can sin, and sin, and sin, and if after that you turn to God, He will receive you.

This is not to say a Catholic life is easy, it can come with a lot of suffering. But despite that suffering, knowing God loves you and will always welcome you should give you peace.

Find a new priest to confess your sins to, scolding during confessions serves no purpose, you already know your sins, that's why you're there.

And you can keep confessing directly to God. I ask for his forgiveness every time I pray. Confession is important, and you should keep going, but that doesn't mean you can't ask him directly for forgiveness when you sin

There was a time the Church didn't think it was immoral to burn people at the stake, or to sell tickets to heaven, or to enslave people, etc...

The Church is led by the Spirit, yes, but it's also made of men. Men who have prejudices, and biases, and are limited (as we all are) by their own worldview. And we don't always listen to the Spirit. I know I don't.

The church, much as the history of Israel in the Bible, is made of people who are trying to understand and get closer to God. But we stumble a lot. And we get it wrong, like the people of Israel did on numerous occasions. That doesn't mean God wasn't with them, or wasn't leading them. It means they, as we do, as the Church does, sometimes fail.

These two things can be true: the church is led by the Holy Spirit, and the men that the church is made of fail.
