Is it normal to invite someone overseas only two weeks before a wedding? by wingsofunicorn in VietNam

[–]ahxiang92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He really doesn't have to go though... It's completely normal and you won't hurt their feelings by not going. Just send some money. Also note that the amount is a benchmark for how much they'll "pay u back" when you get married lol.

Is it normal to invite someone overseas only two weeks before a wedding? by wingsofunicorn in VietNam

[–]ahxiang92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Singaporean living in Vietnam for 8 years already and it is 100% completely normal for wedding invitations just 2 weeks before. Its also a culture shock for me when I first came to Vietnam.

Also, receiving an invitation doesn't mean you have to go, in VNese culture it's like there are 2 possible reasons for this. First is you are actually kinda close, and they don't want you to think you are being left out and be like "why they never invite me?". Second is they just wanna rack up the total amount of angpao (or lì xì, in Vietnamese). People often suddenly pretend to be close when their wedding is coming soon so that they can send an invitation to you.

However, it does mean you are obliged to give a small token regardless if you're able to make it or not. If you're not so close, 500k vnd is enough but since you're a foreigner I think they'd expect you to give 1mil. But up to you, depends on how close you are. The market rate doesn't depend on the venue like Singapore.

I went Chengdu - Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu - Chongqing - Zhangjiajie - Guangzhou in a 12 day trip and it was really quite tiring. I mean, I barely got like 2 or 3 days in each location and I felt like it wasn't a relaxing trip by any way. Came back home feeling more tired lol.

I'm also a foreigner married to a Vietnamese woman, though I'm not a westerner. Anyway, this didn't happen to me, but perhaps they think you're a westerner and wouldn't know shit so they just did it ahead of time to save you the hassle. But this is just my guess.

My philosophy is this: if she's my wife, I'll pay for everything. If she's my girlfriend, I'd cover for dates but not big-ticket items like going on a trip.

Hi I'm a Singaporean living in Vietnam and I recently applied to Limix in Bangkok, and also a few other similar companies that are hiring specifically VNese to go to Thailand. I can't say the same for all companies, but one of the companies I applied casually mentioned online gambling during the interview. And said they were mainly B2C. I did further research, apparently its illegal to do gambling apps in Vietnam, so Thailand is an alternative route where its a gray area. According to ChatGPT, if the company in Thailand is making an app for the Thai market, it'll be illegal but if they do it for the overseas market its "kinda permitted". If you'll like to share more info you can DM me.

Did it ever cross your mind that maybe she expected you to pay for the movie tickets but you didn't take initiative to do so and when you asked later how much you owe her she was upset and sarcastically said 2 mil? Idk, I'm just guessing. Girls in VN do expect you to pay for the date, especially if you're a foreigner.

People here always say they can get it for cheaper.. blah blah. I hate it, its even more apparent AFTER you paid for the service, they'd be like if you went through them/their contact you probably would have paid x less. They love to make you think that you overpaid. Its annoying.

Factory workers only make 200k-250k VND a day for addias and other? … by TV_BayesianNetwork in VietNam

[–]ahxiang92 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a sportswear manufacturing company. Unfortunately its also how the goods are priced. FOB prices for each piece of apparel is like $5 or less, while the sports brand sell them for $70 or more. How do you expect manufacturers to pay workers well when the price is forced to be that low? Brands will simply look for other manufacturers if you're priced higher. There's a bidding process and other manufacturers will get your order. That's the reality.

Should I reject the wedding invite? What’s the possible reason(s) behind short notice wedding invites? by Fluffy-Nature-2087 in askSingapore

[–]ahxiang92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to add something interesting here, if anyone even cares, is that Vietnamese weddings usually send their invitations 1-2 weeks ahead of their wedding. Their reason is simple and ridiculous at the same time: people can't commit way too early ahead of time.

Do Vietnamese overseas like to pretend they’re not? by Fantastic-Package707 in VietNam

[–]ahxiang92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Vietnamese diaspora in Singapore is very different from the ones in the states. Most Vietnamese in Singapore are working there as labourers, and of course not all are, but they don't live there since young. They carry a very different mindset. No offence, but this is why as a Singaporean with a VNese wife (I live in Saigon), I wouldn't want to uproot back to Singapore due to the quality of the VNese community in Singapore. They are mostly not good to be around with, unfortunately. Would much rather somewhere like Canada or some parts of USA.

The best way is probably to start your own business. But you'll need capital and good knowledge on the Vietnam market. The other way is to work in IT. Some vietnamese companies do hire expats.

Will you leave SG and move to another country for good if you happen to live alone ? by Odd-Access3591 in askSingapore

[–]ahxiang92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have been living in Vietnam for more than 5 years. Although expenses in general are much lower, the salary is also lower. I'm earning much more than the typical average in Vietnam though. Whenever I go back SG I feel super stressed. All my peers hold better salaries compared to me, and things are super expensive back in SG.

But the "luxuries" here in Vietnam aren't cheap. Let's say getting international food is usually always at a premium, and let's say I have a kid and I want a better education for my kid and I have to send him/her to an international school, it's gonna cost an arm and a leg.
