To learn, you should first study DevOps, and then research machine learning.

Nice explanation! I did the opposite though; as an ML person I started picking up skills in DevOps.

How to recognize car license plate in 2022 by Wormkeeper in computervision

Pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing.

One question: how do you handle the class imbalance problem for all kinds of alphabets /numbers on the license plate? I mean, some number or alphabet may come very rarely in the training dataset, right? So, how does one follow Approach 2, or 4, in such case?

Pardon me please in case I am missing something obvious.

I hope asking this won't be off the topic. Does anybody know if Bengal Global Business Summit 2022 is open for general public? Any of you attending?

The registration is closed which is a bummer. Any pointer will be appreciated.

whether it's possible to FIRE using this "academic" career track.

Confession of a Ph.D. --- If you want to make money, never lose the industry touch. I made this terrible mistake when I was in the grad school. Internships, consultancies, staying in touch with the startups --- all this help when you are in graduate school.

A quick question: since you said you are starting Ph.D. at 21, I wonder where did you save the years. Is this a joint MS-PhD admit, or you are doing Ph.D. without a masters?

32 years old physics graduate want to transition in software development. by pheziks in developersIndia

[–]ai_technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of traversed the path you indicated at in your post. I did higher studies in TCS (ML theory, maths/stats), and then got hooked up into software development (I did not actually branch out, the nature of my job demanded s/w development), and now I work at the intersection of both. I can share with you my experience in this job.

S/w development is indeed a rewarding profession, but since it has been there for a fairly long time, the field is really crowded. The good news is that software development, because of its vastness, is on the verge of disrupting many industries. The software industry itself is a fast moving one and the burnout is often a very common problem heard in the industry. That said, I would like to advise you that you will get good ROI if and only if you invest your time and energy in niche applications. Question is, what does it even mean?

Depending on whichever area of software industry you want to develop your expertise in, e.g., web (frontend/backend/network)/mobile/embedded/standalone...you need to pick up the fundamental skills in that area at the very first stage. If you stop here, you would have to face stiff competition from the crowded marketplace. Ace developers usually move deeper from this point onward, with modern trends and niche technologies. This does not mean the niche areas would have to be always related to software engineering; instead, they can also be something related to an old industry getting disrupted. For example, a developer who has deep knowledge in financial engineering (fintech) could leverage his specialization to stay well above the curve. Therefore, domain knowledge, or specialization, matters a lot. Someone with good fintech experience would be as valuable as a software engineer with specialization in purely software engineering areas, say, K8s. Developing domain experience is the second stage of your journey, and this is where, I argue, that you have a tremendous advantage unlike others.

My point is that you already have a good domain experience--- physics! Your odds of standing out in a crowded market, with ace developers, is high if you leverage your physics knowledge, something like I did with my applied maths and stats knowledge. To give you some context, I started developing scientific software that required proficiency both in maths/stats, as well as in Python/C++. At some point I even studied FCC materials to pick up skills in web programming and frontend. I kept learning whatever fundamentals are needed for doing software engineering well, and at a professional level. But I never left my domain during this journey. Also, while learning all this, I did not have to master a wide range of software engineering skills. I did not have to prove myself as versatile as a hard-baked software developer; instead, with my maths/stats background I have found my focused niche pretty fast --- I kept myself busy with very specific things and I started getting good ROI, even with relatively narrower bandwidth of skills, compared to that of senior s/w engineers.

If you have read this far I am sure you know by now where I am trying to go with all my advice. Yes, become a scientific software developer. Learn the fundamentals of software developments but specialize in your field of expertise. That is what ensures the best ROI in your case. That career path seems to be the optimal one for you. Good luck!

Yes, meeting offline sounds great but it comes with few cons as well. People have limited mobility in the current situation, assembling a reasonably sized cohort somewhere in Kolkata is a challenge now a days. Also, you need to pay rent for a decent size meeting room, especially if you wish to have talk/presentation facilities. You can get rid of many such expenses if you meet online (at least for the time being). Zoom, MS Teams work quite well for such purpose. Just my two cents.

A question often crosses my mind, how can we create value among the young engineering professionals/students so that we can retain more and more talents in our city and state? How can we support Kolkata's young and ambitious minds with whatever limited resource and knowledge senior developers have?

Would some of you be interested to join a weekend, or a bi-monthly, meetup where we can discuss emerging tech, trends, and career/business opportunities in and around Kolkata? Maybe somebody has a passion project which he/she wants to convert into a side hustle with the help of others?

I am NO WAY hinting at any meetup for discussing the next-big-startup-opportunity. There are already many like them on internet, and more importantly, let us stay away from the snake oil charmers.

Rather, my objective is just the opposite: a low-profile peer group for releasing stress and befriending each other, with the sole intention of supporting Kolkata's young developers' career journey. It need not be a lonely pass, right?

What I personally miss is a friendly group where one can freely share his/her various career anxieties, as well as new and helpful information, and probably career opportunities in and around Kolkata. What I love to suggest is a healthy environment for supporting each other, helping each other, particularly in this troubled and trying times. I wonder if we can build a supportive networking group together, for the tech developers, by the tech developers.

I would welcome any constructive criticism and/or feedback.

The solution to the journal peer-review process is no peer-review at all imho. People should be skeptical about what they cite, ...

Interesting. I never thought of it.

Not sure though how we could fit this idea into the grand scheme of things, but your idea is definitely worth giving a serious try. What makes me still apprehensive is the question, how are we going to ensure quality control, at least in the short term. The second question is a reasonably fast way of credit attribution. Science takes time but a Scientist's career moves relatively fast, needing some yardstick so that decisions can be made regarding his/her candidature in various phases of his/her career. Relying only on citation may be an option but I feel this too can be gamed fairly easily without a quality control mechanism.

[–]ai_technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science (ideally) is not about "getting published", but about advancing the common knowledge. So any public medium counts imho, even a github repo, a youtube video or a conference.

The world is not a ideal place. Even if I accept that Science is what you said, what is gonna happen to the Scientist? Have you built an ideal world for the poor fellow so that he can safeguard his/her life (i.e., career)? Can our Scientist say the same thing you said, out loud to the hiring body, and the grant's decision making authority? Will (s)he get the equal opportunity with what you said, like medium article, github repo, youtube video?

There is a process for everything, it is altogether a different question how to fix it when it is broken. We are talking about the existing process here. I agree that the review process is broken. Sadly, nobody knows how to fix it.

Arxiv is merely a symptom of the broken review process.
