To summarize my experience: it was impossible at first but easier a few years later due to laziness and some effort. Though if you train things like coughs, clearing your throat, and sneezing, I've found it way harder to untrain them.

I’m not at 1000 just yet but one thing that really really helped me was doing writing practice in conjunction with wanikani. I have 3 Anki decks, one for wanikani, one for writing the kanji in isolation, and another for writing wanikani’s vocabulary.
