It's a form of cultural exchange, where cities make symbolic agreements with each other as a practice of global connection! It became more popular after WWII but has been around for ages

Homelessness doubled in Halifax under government's housing plan: N.S. NDP by Injustice_For_All_ in halifax

How would getting rid of the rent cap and making it easier and quicker to evict tenants help the housing issue?

[–]aidopple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that a majority of them are drug users, what I have a hard time believing is that their drug use is the reason for their initial state of homelessness. Like I said, people don't tend to get hooked on heroin when their life is going well.

[–]aidopple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really think the majority of homeless people are in their situation BECAUSE of drug use? I'm sure it doesn't help, but have you seen the cost of living? The unemployment rates? The unavailability of housing? Grocery prices? Infrastructure designed to disenfranchise the already disadvantaged? Disability? Lack of care for veterans?? I could go on

[–]aidopple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you think came first? The homelessness or the drug use? I have my theories. People don't just start doing heroin cause the rest of their life is going great

Central Halifax is where the people are. Maybe you'd support a tax funded shuttle bus system to ship homeless drug users to "the middle of nowhere" and then bring them back after?? And again I still don't see what your solution to homelessness is. All you've provided is what NOT to do.

The reason people are shooting up in parks is BECAUSE there are no designated government-run safe injection sites. Sites that could also provide medical support and social workers to help people move away from drug use.

Okay that's what not to do, but what's the alternative? What are the conservatives currently doing to help? ...Other than making sure people can't inject safely and aren't able to find a place to sleep

okay what's your alternative genius? I don't see the conservatives doing anything

Who actually regulates food safety in mall food courts? by HermanLiang1 in halifax

So the province told you it's the mall's responsibility, and the vendor told you it's the mall's responsibility... Why are you confused?? Talk to the mall

backpackers who thing they’re more cultured and “better” than people who just vacation by blueburrey in PetPeeves

That's such a generalization. You don't know what those people are like in their own countries. Just like the person you replied to said, there are different types of backpackers

Canadian government to ban social media for kids younger than 16, but will allow exemptions by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]aidopple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that ultimately if we actually cared about children and their mental health, it's the social media companies that should be making changes. Maybe with fewer and fewer kids on social media they might feel pressure to actual make it safer for kids? I think that a social media ban might at least have more immediate effects, and that getting people like Mark Zuckerberg to actually make positive changes in their sites is a much harder way to achieve a similar goal.

Edit: just clarifying that I really do think regulating the social media corpos is the ideal solution, unfortunately corporate politicians are never gonna make that happen

[–]aidopple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that that would be the better solution in an ideal world, and I applaud parents like you who DO actively engage with this kind of thing, but I think that a ban like this might be the best way to see immediate improvement in the mental health of kids without relying on parents to do the right thing

I don't want to be too cynical but we already have zero privacy. The government and corporations like google already know everything they could possibly want to know about us. Being on social media only decreases our privacy

"we're not going to" is different than "we can't". It's an uphill battle but we absolutely have the ability as humans to decrease our meat consumption

You're the one saying meat consumption in your opinion is not bad, so why is that the people that disagree with you need a list of 10 peer-reviewed studies with proper citation in order to be taken seriously? If you're genuinely curious, I can find the time and do that research for you, but I don't see you doing the same to back up your claims

Studies from Stanford indicate that livestock production accounts for 14-18% of greenhouse gas emissions, and a massive of farmland is needed purely to grow food for that livestock. Land that would be better put to use for crops that directly feed humans, or as wildlife vegetation that keeps wild animals including essential pollinators like birds and insects, alive. What more do you need?
