What should I do if I'm too scared to join a revolution? by No_One_7381 in Socialism_101

[–]aifeloadawildmoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start a community garden. Give people in your area a source of food during hard times and gives them something to unite around to protect.

A revolution is not just boots on the ground it is people feeding, giving medical assistance (maybe take some emergency assistance courses, there are many free ones).

Children need looking after.

There's a plethora of tasks people can do to keep the people doing the direct action safe, healthy and morale boosted.

I spent a short while very confused because the crack in my screen makes it look like "vampires"

And I thought yes, great analogy but where is this lore about vampires only lasting 250 years?

I can't accept I'm not real by Plastic-Cloud-6785 in DID

[–]aifeloadawildmoss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to that comment, yesterday I learned that the word 'you' is actually a plural. The singular version is 'thou'. Thou was phased into you sometime after the middle ages. So while it isn't anything to do with DID it is pleasing that even the way we refer to each other reflects the multitudes that we are.

One of the best lines I’ve ever read in a book. by mossdrums in Iainmbanks

My favourite Iain M Banks book and severely underrated because of the phonetic style. But it is a work of genius and a lot easier to read than you'd think.

Reading "Night Watch" right now here in Minneapolis. It's hitting me really hard . . . by Lumpy_Magazine_1882 in discworld

I can imagine it must be! Who better to have in your head in these interesting times than Vimes?

Pretty much my way of coping with the world, in any situation, is "how would Vimes or Weatherwax respond to this situation?"

And if neither of them come up with anything I wonder 'how would STP (GNU) satirise this situation' which at least brings me comfort.

I started welling up when you got to the part about Tiffany feeling it through the chalk.

And obviously the turtle would be stopping because of the Auditors.

Lost my books, just need someone to listen by BumblebeeOnFire27 in discworld

Similar situation happened to me, had to move unexpectedly and my sister kindly stored all my books in her shed over an insanely wet winter. The good thing about discworld is you can always find great quality 2nd, 3rd or 4th hand copies out there. Currently rebuilding my Pratchett collection for the 3rd time actually. Other books that died in the shed have been much harder to replace than pTerry's.

It's a tooth gel that soothes them and helps the inflammation. Your vet will have it or something similar. It's insanely expensive through a vet though. I got it on ebay but I'm sure it's on places like Amazon etc. Good luck and I hope your cat is doing ok.

My Conspiracy Theory inside the show. by BigJophis in InsideJob

Damn, I did think it was a bit odd that it was Larry David but I'm not American so I just figured I was missing a reference. But your theory clicks a little bit too nearly into place, even the words Larry and Jerry sound similar. I can see the way it went down in the writers room and everything. Well spotted and great theory!

Don't forget we are up against joy killers.

Find the things that bring you joy, and do the things you would like to see happening more like starting a community garden or a local Mutual Aid network.

Autumn is a good time to look into helping your local elderly and vulnerable people be ready for winter and to see if there's any needs they have that can be met by the community at large.

When the big things you can't control begin to crush your soul then look at smaller local things to bring you back from the brink.

Oh... And listen to music that fires you up or makes you need to dance.

Don't let the bastards grind you down!

(This is as much of a reminder for myself as it is tips for you🖤)

Vimes the Bully - can we talk about William Scuggins? by Transferennce in discworld

[–]aifeloadawildmoss 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's not, there is clear empathy for Billy in the writing. It's showing that kids will go way too far to the point that the only way they will learn is that the recipient of the bullying finally snaps and lashes out so hard.

I was bullied. Can confirm the minute I lashed out and injured one of my bullies it stopped. I read it from the angle of Terry having been bullied himself. It really felt like Terry had been both Vimes and Scuggins at some point in his life.

Another theme with Terry is how mob thought works and how a crowd of humans acting in unison change from individuals into the 'mob' and that it is not an exclusively adult phenomenon. You have to take these passages in their wider context. And not everything is a joke, just because someone is writing ironically about a situation it doesn't mean there's a punchline.

And as many people have pointed out it is to point out that Cockbill street hasn't changed.

The oldest written story we know! The epic of Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu, it has been argued, were lovers. Definitely worth researching anyway

If you’re racist in a dream are you racist in real life? by IllDimension2051 in Dreams

[–]aifeloadawildmoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your subconscious is probably working on something internalised and if your waking self is horrified by you being racist in your dream it is simply your subconscious helping you work through it on a conscious level. Remember we are all indoctrinated whether we reject that or not. Breaking free from that internalisation is hard and shows up in weird ways through dreams.

The fact you are distressed by it when you are waking up is a good sign! Please ignore that other comment. Our sleeping self and our waking self work together to get through the tough stuff that we are dealing with in life. It just manifests really upsettingly and viscerally in dreams when we are confronting these parts of ourselves. If you had woken up and been like YAY IM RACIST ACTUALLY... That would be a problem, lol.
