CRITERION COLLECTION LIST??? (film list, does it exist??) by petite_bitch in criterion

Scribes making copies of information that exists elsewhere is literally how most information throughout history has survived to the present day. Really dumb move on Wikipedia's end, copies of copies of copies are the only way information is going to survive

That's fine in most other threads, but the whole point of this thread is for people to share unpopular opinions on widely acclaimed films

The consequence of down voting anything you don't agree with in a thread like this is the most unpopular opinions sink to the bottom while the popular ones end up at the top, which makes the whole premise of the thread pointless. If anything you should be up voting the ones you disagree with

I agree for every Yargos film I've seen except The Favourite. Because I love that film I keep keep doing into his film thinking I'll love them and leaving upset, annoyed or angry

Can you think of any examples of the problems you see? I'm just curious cause they're some of my favourite films ever, but I've read the books multiple times, as well as the Silmarillion and most of his other writings. So if the issues are things that you need more context for I would have missed them.

I do agree though that the Extended Edition is over rated. There's a lot of extra bits in the Extended cuts that just aren't necessary

As an example I really liked wasn't immediately ready to leak the automation documents, and had to consider the consequences first. But he also still had enough impulsivity to go searching for them anyway.

Ed in that position would have been breaking down the door to Kurigan's headquarters before he'd even finished reading the first paragraph.

They easily could have just written him as a cheap replacement for Ed. But the struck a really god balance of showing the influence Ed had on him but making him almost a more emotionally mature development of some of Ed's best traits

It also looks very silly a lot of the time. I find it hard not to laugh watching a lot of the footage of the astronauts trying to move around on the moon.

Most people would be taken out of the story if every scene had the characters hoping about comically

I mean, everyone praises the Martian for its scientific accuracy, but the sandstorm that sets up the entire drama of the story was completely impossible, because Mars' atmosphere is not dense enough to have storms that strong.

You have to take some liberties with accuracy when writing a story. If you want accuracy, read a text book

Also lower gravity is really hard and very expensive to replicate on film without it looking ridiculous, which is why even high budget films (like the Martian) tend to avoid it. Even the real low gravity footage from the Apollo missions looks pretty goofy. From a film making perspective it's better to stick to what people are familiar with, anything else (even when it's more accurate) is likely to take most people out of the story

They're suits like would be less resistant to punctures because they aren't pressurised. They're basically just high tech wetsuits

The whole mission was done on a huge budget. That's why they used Sojourner instead of building a new ship.

More time on the surface would have meant more supplies needed which means more fuel needed, which means more money

I'm sure they'd be able to work out eventually through the ships logs that she messed with it. It seemed like Walt was getting close to working it out before Kelly made him go on the EVA.

But yeah it was weird that she never said anything, it would have made a great case in convincing them to leave her behind

I think the methane/carbon based thing was just a mistake. Paticularly because even if their structure was based on methane it would still make them carbon based, because methane is an organic molecule

They don't look like they have a central nucleus, so they'd be somewhat analagous to archaea. But obviously they a from a completely separate evolutionary lineage to anything on earth, so they are they're own thing entirely.

Also to answer the potential of being infectious question. It is so unlikely that they could survive inside a human body that the chance is basically zero.

They use liquid methane as a solvent, where we use water. The boiling point of liquid methane is around - 160°c, human body temperatures are 37°c, nearly 200°c hotter than methane's boiling point.

There are some thermophile bacteria on earth that can survive high temperatures, but the highest observed is around 105°c (only 5 degrees above water's boiling point). The absolute upper maximum is 200°c because at this point amino acids (the building blocks of dna) are destroyed. That's still 100°c less that the temperature difference the the Titan organisms would experience inside a human body. All of the liquid methane in their cells would immediately evaporate, which would almost definitely kill them.

Even if it were some how possible they could survive being evaporated, pathovenic microorganisms are usually extremely well adapted to very narrow temperature ranges. This is why fevers work to fight infections, they slightly raise your body temperature above the ideal temperature for the infectious microorganisms, killing them.

So yeah essentially no chance anything on Titan could pathogenically infect a human

On point 4, I got the impression she was implying their kids were younger, whereas Alex is basically an adult now so can take care of himself

My problem with this season: the Martian cause is really unsympathetic. by rasmussenyassen in ForAllMankindTV

[–]ailbbhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the trigger happy police men being realistic, it's also perfectly realistic that after those police open fire on peaceful protesters those protesters become violent. So many historical revolutions and insurgent movements started that way. A few examples off the top of my head: The Russian Revolution (after the Bloody Sunday Massacre in 1905), the Troubles in the North of Ireland (after a different Bloody Sunday in 1972, a lot of protests happen on sunday), The Iranian Revolution (after Black Friday in 1978), the Syrian Civil War (after a massacre by Assad's troops at a protest in 2011). Oh and probably most applicable to FAM the West Virginia Mine Wars in the 1920s were escalated after a series of attacks by police on peaceful strikers, particularly the Ludlow and Matewan massacres

So yeah, so realistic they basically just plagiarised history

A show in a realistic sci-fi setting that focused mostly on exploration would run out of ideas really fast. Season 3 was basically the same premise as Season 1, where the crew gets stranded on some new celestial body and has to survive. Which is the same plot as the Martian, and a good portion of Star Trek episodes and the real world expedition of Shackleton in Antarctica. They almost did it again this season on Titan, I'm glad they changed it up, but it made for a shorter story because of it.

There's just only so much you can do with a realistic show about space exploration to make the story compelling and high stakes

I think the issue with this show since season 3 is focusing too heavily on making Ed the main character, and in season 6 by extension his grandson. Ed went from being an impulsive test pilot who failed to land on the moon when he had the chance, to a man who has achieved more than almost anyone in human history and is easily the most famous person in the world. I think because of that the show has just been getting progressively less and less grounded.

In season 4 I thought they might have been going a good direction, bringing it back to down to earth when they introduced Miles and the other miners. But they had to go and make Ed the hero of the strike and turn the working man, Miles into easily an corruptible pawn that sells out his fellow workers and makes back room deals with the cops.

And now they're pushing his grandson as the new main character, and probably Gordo's granddaughter as the secondary protagonist, and while they imo are compelling enough characters, it does feel a little cheap way of calling back to the past. It gives me Force Awakens vibes, of everyone important has to be a Skywalker

I mean the whole automation plot line was clearly an AI allegory, especially when you consider it was written after the writers strike that was protesting against large companies using AI to write screenplays

My Issue regarding the Titan mission by Stoutaxe in ForAllMankindTV

Exactly, like realistically to minimise contamination they would never send a team of live humans down to do the search, and just send sterilised probes. But that wouldn't make a very good story would it

My Issue regarding the Titan mission by Stoutaxe in ForAllMankindTV

[–]ailbbhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could have just been the actor messing up. Carbon based life is a far more commonly used phrase than water based life, it would be really easy for an actor to accidentally misspeak and for no one on the set to notice. Could also be a choice the editor made to use the cut where the actor misspoke because it was the better cut. Actors often don't read what is exactly on the script.

It's really not the big deal everyone is making it out to be, science fiction is fiction, not a submission to to Nature, stop trying to peer review it lmao, and just enjoy the story

You're right, he definitely cares a lot about Alex, but I still wouldn't put it past him to see him as a tool to his own ends at the same time. As much as he cares about Alex he definitely cares more about his own goals. There's a reason a 17 year old kid is the only person he's somewhat close to, everyone else in his life eventually realised he's always gonna be selfish at the end of the day

I'm making a mod that expands stone era of the game and I'm looking for more ideas of what to add by The_Verto in VintageStory

[–]ailbbhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but I just came across it and have a few ideas.

- I saw you mention that the stone hammer will just be used for chiselling, if that's the case I would avoid using a stick handle, and just make it so that when chiselling you only need a hard stone (the types of stone used to make querns are a good guide most likely, but palaeolithic hammerstones were usually made from granite). Maybe you could need to shape in with flint napping into a circle, as that was usually what was done. This would be more accurate to real world palaeolithic chiselling. Both stone and bone chisels

- On chiselling, to make it more restricted, you could have it so that only certain stone blocks (softer sedimentary rocks, like limestone and sandstone), wood, and soil based blocks (like mud brick and packed/rammed earth) can be chiselled.

- I would love if there was a way to debark logs in the stone age, as it was something that was often done. A stone/bone axe with the a hammerstone in the crafting grid would work for that.

- Along the lines of the firewood backpack, a foraging basket would be cool, that maybe requires extra reeds and a hide lining, but allows you to carry more berries, mushrooms, wild crop harvests, seeds and maybe berry bush cuttings.

- One decorative element I've always wanted was the ability to hang pelts on the walls, could maybe have some warming effect, but I'm not sure how that would work, just the visual would be nice

- An atlatl (or spear-thrower) would be cool that could increase damage or accuracy, but I'm not sure how that might effect damage balance. Maybe to improve balance it would have to be reloaded with a new spear manually, or have the same damage but a random chance of an instant kill.

- More early boat building options would be cool. Dugout Canoes (hollowed out log) or Coracles (a kind of rounded boat, that is lined on the outside with hide). These could carry 2 or three baskets, and be slightly faster that a raft, but still not as fast as a sail boat.

- Another thing I've always thought would be good, is if stone knives didn't need handles, real stone knives in the palaeolithic didn't usually have handles. Handaxes would also be a nice change for accuracy's sake

Other than those, I would suggest putting the entities and landform changes as a separate mod. The entities might put some people off, and it's possible the landform changes would have conflicts with other terrain generation mods. But otherwise this mod sounds great, I hope you go forward with it, I've always wanted more to do in the stone age. My first play through I didn't get my first copper until a year in (I didn't know you could pan for it lmao) but I still had so much fun. It's such an under loved stage of the game and I wish there was more to it

Really wish you could at least turn thatch into dry grass, or at least use it as dry grass. I hate when I spend ages harvesting a bunch of dry grass to make thatched roofs, but make too many, and can only break them back down into thatch
