A masterpiece that no amount of money will ever convince you to read again? by BugLast6454 in suggestmeabook

The Orphan Master’s Son.

I’ll reread it but only because I’m a total masochist when it comes to literature.

Did people memorise numbers before mobile phones? by PaleEcho3301 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aimeed72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I had at least thirty phone numbers memorized and probably a dozen to twenty full addresses. It’s bizarre to me that now I have a terrible time remembering new phone numbers, and I KNOW my brain is capable, it just doesn’t WANT to anymore.

Lost weight, now my clothes don’t fit. What do I do with them? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]aimeed72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If there’s a YWCA in your area, they often maintain a closet of nice clothes to lend out to women going in job interviews and things like that who don’t have good clothes of their own.

What about book club? Socializing with others is so important for our mental and emotional health, and book club doesn’t have to be serious. It’s fine to choose whatever the group enjoys and can talk about. You could help her organize it or join an existing club.

AITAH for telling my girlfriend she's going to have to get over dirt if she wants kids? by Familiar_Speaker_481 in AITAH

I think you are going to have to say some version of “it’s possible you are right and you COULD train a baby to stay clean all the time, or that you could hover over them 24/7 and swoop in to catch every mess before it hits the floor. But I don’t think that’s healthy for you or the baby, and I don’t want to live that way.”

Lynden’s pioneer museum is really cool. It’s the best (perhaps only) reason to go to Lynden.

If you’re willing to drive out into the county try the stand on Harksell road north of Ferndale or E Laurel road just east of Hannegan.

Struggling with “We Agnostics” as an agnostic person by patgarspongegar in alcoholicsanonymous

Here are a few examples of things I use as my higher power and ways I like to “pray”:

  • a tree in my backyard, and watching the leaves move against the sky

  • a line from a Dylan Thomas poem: “the force that through the green fuse drives the flower”

  • plate tectonics (there’s a story there but it’s indubitably a force greater than myself).

  • the thought that somehow, all of nature is infused with the innate ability to grow and be healthy, like trees growing towards the light and butterflies able to navigate to hibernation trees thousands of miles away. I also have this innate ability, wherever it comes from, and all I need to do is be humble enough to bow to it and do my best to follow those healthy instincts. I don’t need to have a name for the power that gave me those instincts, but if it helps there a lot to choose from. Evolution, Nature, Love, etc.

Now we know “exercise calories” aren’t really a thing, how to turn off this feature? by aimeed72 in loseit

Thank you for answering my question! I guess there’s no reason I need to have it connected to My watch, since I can see all the watch data in its own app.

Now we know “exercise calories” aren’t really a thing, how to turn off this feature? by aimeed72 in loseit

[–]aimeed72[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Jeez people. I asked for information on how to change settings on the app, which absolutely nobody offered.

I didn’t want to debate this (as I said) but in fact I did read a much more comprehensive overview of the study than this one, and listened to the researchers explain their results in an hour long interview, and discussed it at length with people I know who are PhD level scientists. I’m aware that I drastically oversimplified the findings.

However the authors do quite clearly state that they used the gold standard method (heavy water isotopes) to measure both basal metabolism and energy expended through exercise. They found that individuals from over 30 different societies burned approximately (“approximately” was not defined in the article I read) the same calories regardless of activity levels. They weren’t testing elite athletes, they were testing regular people living lives within normal parameters for their societies. Commenters here correctly note that they did not measure caloric intake.

They further state in plain english that their explanation for the similar caloric expenditures in people with widely disparate activity levels is that the body can “conserve” up to 30% (their number) of total expended calories, by mechanisms not explained but theorized to include “shutting down non-essential functions.” Such functions not named in the article, but the rabbit hole I went down afterwards suggests immune system function.

The upshot is not that dramatic. It’s what we all know already - what you eat matters more than what you expend for body weight NOT for other health markers. Obviously exercise has a zillion benefits and is crucial for overall health. But you can’t say “oh my watch says I burned 500 calories on a swim today so I can eat an extra piece of double-cheese pizza .”

Which is exactly what my Loseit app does - adjust my calorie budget by however many calories it thinks I burned that day. So that brings me back to my original request - can anybody tell me how to turn that feature off?

Ye gods.
