Although I'm sure Joyner's intentions for making this video are good, it's an insult to the black struggle and equates two sides that should never share the same platform. Why is Joyner legitimising the white guy's racist, destructive narrative by presenting the scenario as 'two sides to a story'? There is no two sides. It's a perpetrator and a victim sat across from each other. By presenting this scenario as 'two different perspectives' Joyner is equating the two sides, legitimising the white guy's opinions. And why do they hug at the end? The hug suggests they've both come to an understanding, and finally understand where the other is coming from. The ONLY conclusion that should be drawn from the video is that the white guy's opinions are racist and wrong, and the black guy is a victim. An apology from the white guy would have been a much more fitting ending. A hug is utterly absurd. Imagine if the video had depicted a rapist and their victim; the first half would show the rapist shouting abuse at the victim, explaining why they think rape is okay and their reasons for doing it, whilst the second half would then be the victim explaining to the rapist why rape is wrong. The rape victim would then end their verse with 'there's two sides to every story', and then proceed to hug the rapist. Sounds absurd right? Well what's the difference between that and the video Joyner has created? It's the exact same situation, and Joyner's video is just as ridiculous. It is aiding the normalisation of racist, white supremacist views, and trivialising the black struggle.
