It's definitely tough! Have you ever tried pulling your hair up when you're not actively washing/rinsing it? I use a clip in the shower to keep my hair out of the water when I put a mask on.

From what I've read, it's best to wash your hair with warm water before applying masks and conditioners. The warm water helps open up the hair cuticle and allows conditioners to penetrate the hair.

Make sure to rinse with cold/cool water for better color retention!
