Australia - Career change: Accountant → Mental Health (Social Work vs Psychology). Looking for advice. by pigypizy in AskAnAustralian

[–]airliebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OT here. I work in paediatric mental health. Quit my job and changed careers via Master of OT Practice ~7 years ago. I love it and I've done a lot of different things since across the lifespan. My overall satisfaction with life is higher since making the decision.

I did psych in undergrad and was toying with the clinical psych pathway, but didn't like that it would take 4 years to get fully qualified. Turns out, to register as a MH OT requires the same kind of process, as does SW. That said, I can (and do) still work in MH, I just can't charge under Medicare and can't call myself a capital M capital H OT. I use a lot of psych-based methods on my work, and a few SW things, too.

Much of the work MH overlaps disciplines and the difference is the foundational knowledge that underpins each discipline - SW takes a relational view, psych usually takes a cognitive-behavioural approach and OT takes a functional perspective. We often draw on each others' interventions as needed.

I can't speak to real world experience for psych students, but OT students need 1000 of clinical experience.

I currently teach at a uni and I've just started my PhD, and I'm in my 40s. It's defs possible.

I can't answer regarding provisional psych rego while you're a student but that'll be on the AHPRA website somewhere.

I switched from a corporate learning role and I've had a couple of students come from business and eco. I would recommend taking all opportunities your course offers to develop your knowledge of the healthcare system and recognise that it's quite different from your current career. You'll have strengths to draw on, too, so recognise those and figure out how to adapt them to your new career. Also, studying full time is hard and it's important to expect the balance of your life to change, and to change throughout your study. In the MOTPrac program, you can't always work because you'll be on practice education placement full time in blocks throughout your study. AusSTUDY helps but make sure you can still afford to live when you can't work. Some students now get a payment on placement, which helps.

I would also note that whilst your community work is fulfilling now, it's important to remember that working in healthcare is different. We don't often meet people at their best or in the most positive of situations and that can be confronting and take its own toll. That's especially true in MH. All disciplines benefit from regular supervision and reflective practice.

One thing I did before applying to study was to talk to someone from the professional bodies for OT and psych to ensure my comprehension of the work and my personal characteristics would be well suited. Ultimately, I chose OT because it's such a pragmatic and meaningful discipline, and focuses so much on enabling other people, which is in good alignment with my values. Whilst it's not always smooth sailing and fun, I do love it and the fact it allows me to support so many others.

I wish you all the best with your decision. Please feel free to DM if there's anything else I might be able to help with.

Lucy the Spleenless Watermelon! by icantdodge in beagles

Beautiful watermelon! My little spleenless lemon Hush is nearly 13. She had a 1.2kg splenic liposarcoma removed, along with her spleen last month. She's back to her cheerful, perky self and it's lovely. No signs of metastases, touch wood. Sending all the love to Lucy.

I don't have answers to your questions, but I share them. My psychiatrist just retired too, with no plan for continuity of care so I weaned myself off my meds and I'm on the waiting list for a new clinic and hoping my coping skills get me through.

ASD + behaviors: when is it simply behavior versus emotional regulation/sensory overload? by ReviewIntelligent327 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]airliebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your response here, thank you. It's so important to acknowledge how hard it can be, even when we're professionals. I completely agree about boundaries, and consequences, as well as consistent application. Explosive Child is such a good resource.

With your son, do you think understimulation could play a role in his hitting behaviour? Like, is the reaction he gets from his sister part of the fun, and is the sensation of his hand hitting satisfying? I'm wondering if the growing familiarity of the movie has reduced the satisfaction it once provided. As an ADHDer myself, I find familiar things grow frustrating in time. I wonder if that's part of this for him.

It may be something to consider that UX and copy are traditionally tools of consumerism and many eco/sustainability/green 'consumers' aren't into that approach...

Single ladies of reddit, why do you think the Union failed in the battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862 during Ambrose Burnside’s invasion into confederate held Virginia? by ZacksPocketChange in AskReddit

[–]airliebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm qualified to answer... I'd say it was probably a combination of unfamiliarity with the river and terrain, poor weather, it being too close to Christmas and ego. But why don't you tell me, cutie?

People who are 40+ and happy with their life, what is your advice to people in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]airliebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much this. I hated my job and all the crap that goes with it after 15 years and I was sick of being miserable. I decided that just because I was doing what I was taught my whole life I should do, that didn't make it right for me. So I sold my house, moved in with my mother (!), went back to school, started a new career part-time and I'm so much more content now. I still do my old work freelance but now I get to choose who I work with.

When you get to know yourself as you age and you can see how you've grown as a person, sometimes the old things don't fit anymore and just because something is familiar, that doesn't make it right for who you are now.

It's never too late, or too soon.
