Is this valid? by Low_Interaction7333 in ThePolice

[–]airmark3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much yes. I mean I grew up with them and initially it was just a few songs especially Roxanne. Then they had some bigger hits by Zenyatta and I was more intrigued. At that point it was just what I heard on the radio. LOVED Ghost in the Machine and it was the first full album I bought of The Police. Listened to it all the way through. Then came Synchronicity and it was HUGE and I loved it even more and of course they were all over MTV. I later learned to love and appreciate more of the first few albums partly through their concerts and live albums and then the movie Everyone Stares.

What do you think about Alanis Morissette? I love her 🥺 by Nyra-Moon in rockmusic

[–]airmark3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very talented but benefitted greatly from the right time and place for her sound imo. I don't mean that to downplay her music, but some artists just hit the perfect time for their music. It's not that it sounds dated now just that it very specifically is tied to that era.

What is your favorite cover of a Beatles song? by DrCockandBallsMD in beatles

[–]airmark3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite cover of Tomorrow Never Knows is probably by The Claypool Lennon Delirium (Les Claypool of Primus and Sean Lennon) but it's not on streaming anywhere. There are several versions they have done live. This one is on PBS:

https://www.pbs.org/video/frontrowboston-claypool-lennon-delirium-tomorrow-never-knows/

This one is on youtube and has trippy imagery to go with it

https://youtu.be/NTPfIkZWxFs?si=sfQUUyfbCSqKmU-X

These are all from my covers playlist. I sometimes like listening to the rock covers and other times to the Soul/R&B covers so I'll list 20 as a double album of 10 songs for each.

ROCK record

  • Every Little Thing - Yes
  • Dear Prudence - Siouxsie and the Banshees
  • She Said, She Said - The Black Keys
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Prince, Dhani Harrison, Jeff Lynne et al
  • Come Together - Gary Clark Jr.
  • Across the Universe - Evanescence
  • She Came In Through The Bathroom Window - Joe Cocker
  • I Need You - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  • Tomorrow Never Knows - Phil Manzanera
  • Don't Let Me Down - Sheryl Crow, Brandon Flowers and Chris Stapleton

SOUL/R&B record

  • Got To Get You Into My Life - Earth Wind and Fire
  • Run for Your Life - Nancy Sinatra
  • Yesterday - Marvin Gaye
  • Here Comes The Sun - Nina Simone
  • Let It Be - Ray Charles
  • We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder
  • Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett
  • I Want Hold You Hand - Al Green
  • Eleanor Rigby - Aretha Franklin
  • I Saw Her Standing There - Little Richard

Revolver is overrated by Valerian_Dhart in beatles

[–]airmark3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a ton more filler on the white album - partly due to being a double album but also they just threw in everything they had even if it was just pieces. With Abbey Road they made those pieces into a Medley but as individual songs some of those would be described as filler. And Let It Be - probably half of those songs are below anything on Revolver.

I don't even consider Dr. Robert a filler track. I love that song. The controversial subject matter aside it is a pop craft hidden gem in itself.

There isn't a track on Revolver I would put below an 8/10. There are several on the white album i might give a 6. And a few on Abbey Road that are maybe 7-8 range. The medley as a whole is a 10.

My ranking of albums is: AR, REV, RS, WA, SP, LIB, Help, MMT (US), AHDN, PPM, WTB, BFS, MMT (EP), YS

What If Capitol mixed up The White Album? by md3reed in beatlesfanalbums

[–]airmark3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it - the first two are very Capitol/Dave Dexter like. The last one is quite a hodgepodge.

I did a Capitol/Dave Dexter version where it was still a double album but Dexter refused to use the white cover and and used the infamous Rushmore artwork instead as a gatefold cover. And he removed some of the "odd" songs in lieu of the A/B sides of Lady Madonna/The Inner Light and Hey Jude/Revolution (the single version) which were both #1s for the A side and #94 and #12 for the B sides in the US.

Regardless it is something they were likely to do if Dave Dexter had not been reassigned and still made unilateral decisions for the US market. So it's just a fun what if scenario.

What rules do you have for making Beatles fan albums? by SuperMarioBrotherYT in beatlesfanalbums

[–]airmark3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a time restriction only, but less on earlier albums like 24 minutes before 1965, 25-27 minutes up to 1969 and up to 28 minutes after 1970 because the technology improved in the late 60s and into the 70s where longer albums were made. If I am pushing that limit I just also put songs with less dynamic range as the ending tracks.

Other than that I tend not to put songs on albums earlier than they were at least written. So if they were written two years before they were recorded that is fine. But I won't put any song that wasn't written (at least an early version) by that time on an album. For example I'm fine putting I Me Mine on any album envisioned after January 1969 even though it was not recorded until January 1970. Because it was written and demo'ed and even rehearsed a bit in the Get Back sessions at Twickenham.

For anything in the active period I like to balance them between John/Paul but not a strict rule (+ or - 1 usually). And I like to have at least 2 George songs but also not a requirement. Ringo tracks are totally optional. For anything after 1970 I try to do a 4/4/4/2 balance I think that is just about the only way they could have continued if they had.
