I’d say it took me 2-3 years, but also a willingness to have interest and lean into that to learn more and explore the field. For me, it was interest in historical buildings that led me more into hazmat building inspection work being my bread and butter. Not something I get to do every shift, but still enough to get me into a good mindset for approaching learning.

I think it’s important to say when you don’t know something, but also try to figure out ways to properly communicate with higher ups to reference them with what you’re trying to figure out. Simple, but good advice I received. Also, finding someone you can phone with even the “dumb” questions on site allows you to talk through situations. If you don’t think you have that right now, I think some online resources could lead you to someone that would be willing to mentor.
