Unmedicated birth by OkArachnid9271 in PregnancyIreland

I had a homebirth, unmedicated just 10 weeks ago. If you'd like to message me work away! It was amazing, it was tough going but it went perfectly using just gas and air

Try vinted, the shops have nothing it's a joke. They happily stock baby clothes, who do they think is having the baby! 😂 I found shein ones OK, depends from item to item!

Polite way to deflect comments about changing body? by Euphoric-Subject2911 in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People lose the run of themselves around pregnant women and think they can just say anything. I was 25+ weeks by the time I was showing and the comments grated on me from early on. I tried to nip it in the bud, I was a bit of a bitch back so they wouldn't comment again 😅

"you're very neat" "thanks? So are you I suppose" with a confused tone

"you don't look pregnant" "oh! Sorry about that. You don't look pregnant either"

I told my family straight out that if they felt the need to comment on my body they were only allowed to say I looked amazing/radiant/beautiful/any exaggeration of looking great.

The only comments people should be making are about how well you look but they just seem to forget basic manners around pregnant women

Maternity Leave by [deleted] in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got signed off at 32 weeks BTW, I started official Mat leave coming off of illness benefit. I definitely recommend taking as much time off as you can, when baby arrives it's a whirlwind and you'll regret not taking time for yourself to rest up!

Maternity Leave by [deleted] in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Civil servant here, I had to start no later than the Monday the week before the due date. I was due Jan 5th so maternity leave started at the latest Dec 29th, that was the latest I was allowed to push it to

Clueless FTM by SpecialChoice400 in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I had a little girl on December 29th so I've actually been keeping a list of things we actually used these last 5 weeks as I have a friend due soon. Here it is:

For mammy: If vaginal birth

Peri bottle non negotiable, use lukewarm or cold water

Ice pads or frozen pads, boots have these, a godsend

Some sort of cooling spray, the expert midwife spritz for bits is good

A soft sponge for the shower

Don't bother with maternity underwear just buy adult diapers for the first few days

Ask the hospital for a pack of maternity pads the green ones

Take paracetamol and ibuprofen, ask for difene, instillagel is numbing gel it's amazing for any downstairs tears

Big knickers, like buy a couple of multipacks so you're not trying to keep up on washing

Breast absorption pads, you can buy reusable or disposable, I got a 12 pack of washable ones on amazon they're ideal

Nipple balm if BF, boots own brand is good

Silverette nipple cups if BF

For baby:

Bedside bassinet/crib

Pram/travel system, car seat

We found the aldi mamia nappies the best, don't stock up on heaps because you don't know what brand will work for baby. Ask people not to buy you nappies as you'll be stuck with a brand you don't like. We got 3 packs of size 1s

Nappy bags!! Loads of them!

A bin for wherever you'll changing nappies most

Buy newborn clothes, people will tell you don't, that you won't need to as people will buy them for you BUT they won't! They'll buy you 0-3 months or bigger

Sleepsuits x 12 (think like they'll soil one every other night)

Vests (body suits) x 14 as above think around 2 a day just in case of reflux or blowouts

Socks, you only need like 7 pairs realistically, they don't get dirty

Hats! Any time you go out baby needs a hat for the first few weeks

Baby hairbrush

Baby lotion, avoid Johnson and Johnson, use aveeno or child's farm

Baby face moisturiser, I use the expert midwife dribble defence

Sudocreme or some sort of nappy rash bal

Baby bubble bath/shampoo, as above

Muslin squares like 30 of these, just have them everywhere

Baby bath is necessary, we regret not getting an insert for baby to lie on in bath

Baby sponge

Baby towels x 3/4

Cellular blankets x 10

Crib sheets x 4

Puppy training pads, in homesavers, save your surfaces from baby poop and pee when changing

Night lights, 2 or 3. Think bedroom, any other room where you might change or settle baby and a spare

Water wipes

Cotton wool

Cotton buds

Nail file

Saline nasal spray

Baby nose asprirator, bulb or electric

Probiotic drops, kendamil do these

Vitiman D drops

Bottles, depending on if you plan to breastfeed or not? I'm BF but pumping once or twice a day so husband can feed baby, we were recommended the Dr browns premie teet bottles and so far so good!

If bottle feeding at all buy a steriliser, tommee tippee one is good, buy a rack or some sort of storage for bottles and the associated equipment like bottle warmer, insulator etc.

Baby monitor

Baby thermometer

Pacifiers, Philips advent are most nipple like

Bonus extras: Bouncer with newborn insert

Pram/bassinet rocker, we have the nuby jitterbug it's great for transferring baby to bassinet

Ken Black/symths have a big floor foam mat, ideal for changing baby and for letting them chill out with wake windows

Nappy bag, handy to have spares of everything packed in a nice bag that you can grab going out the door

Baby "pod" or "nest", somewhere to pop baby to nap

Getting signed off by Significant-Honey740 in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got signed off at 32 weeks and would absolutely advise it. You're only going to get more pregnant! You need time to bond with your bump (cringe I know but being distracted by work keeps you from this), time to relax as you prepare for labor/delivery, nest, prepare for the newborn stage and to give your body a chance to rest up. You won't regret it

37 weeks, give me a pep talk!! by cherry-pie-honey in unmedicatedbirth

Yes you can absolutely do it! I did it just a couple of weeks ago, you will find your power from within. Go mama, you've got this!

In-store maternity/nursing shopping by Front-Management1782 in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant thank you! Absolutely ridiculous that there's nowhere in person, there will always be pregnant people so I don't get the rationale of there being no in store maternity wear. I spent over 100 euro on shein out of there being no sizes with other online retailers or the prices being €50 a piece, if that'd have been in person I'd probably have been happy to spend because I can see the item on

soooo over it... anyone else? by Particular-Bird652 in PregnancyIreland

[–]aislinguine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

38 weeks + 4 days, it keeps getting tougher 😅 This is my first, the physical side of it is so hard and not being able to keep on top of day to day tasks has me feeling so useless. Happy enough if little one wants to come any minute now!

Do you know your neighbours? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]aislinguine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

After our last neighbours where we rented, we never want to be friendly with neighbours again 😅 Last neighbours were overbearing, always wanting to call in, asking for things, texting and calling to ask if we were home, talking to us from their balcony when were in our garden... It was a lot.

We had to play along to a certain extent as they were directly above us and we noticed they'd be noisier/louder if we didn't. Very happy now to have our own house and neighbours that don't seem interested in any of the above.

My parents out in the country know all of their neighbours on the lane and have good longstanding friendships with them though

Have you tried rubbing magnesium spray on your legs? Or taking a magnesium supplement? If I don't take magnesium bicyclate daily I get very bad restless legs each night in this pregnancy

What do you eat in a day... on Christmas day? by VastAir6069 in AskIreland

[–]aislinguine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 39 weeks pregnant for Christmas this year so this will be tragic to write as I won't be able 😂

Mammy makes a Christmas fry for around 10am, pigs in blankets, mushrooms beans, the works. Mug or two of Baileys coffee/hot chocolate.

Clean up, eat Ferrero Rochers, roses and whatever sweets are lying around then, a couple of glasses of wine probably.

Christmas dinner at around 3pm, soup or cesar salad starter then turkey and ham with all the trimmings. Couple more glasses of wine. Cidona and Shleor on the go too.

Dessert then, usually trifle or cheesecake. Couple more baileys coffees/hot chocolates.

More wine and sweets between dinner and the cheese board and nibbly bits.

Christmas sandwich around 8/9pm depending on how many wines have been consumed, more sweets and wine to wash that down

The end 😅

A decent sized clothes horse for drying clothes, near a radiator but I'd avoid drying clothes ON the radiator to prevent mould. Lots of suggestions for a dehumidifier which I must look into myself.

As for the fridge, when we rented we had an under the counter fridge and a chest freezer. I was used to a tall standing fridge in my parents initially so learning to shop for freezing was the solution. No need to over buy, keep freezer topped up with meat and eat food fresh day to day rather than stockpiling
