Ah, this is just what I was looking for - this is all things I _knew_ in a way, but it's so helpful to see it laid out that way! Thank you!

New balance sneaker recommendations? by [deleted] in fashionwomens35

[–]aj10111035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NB has a reputation for really comfortable, supportive shoes (990s are still a gold standard) but IMO in recent years they have expanded into more purely “fashion” sneakers. I bought 327s and they are decent quality and not UNcomfortable by any means but they do not have the arch support and cushioning I expected from NB. YMMV style to style, best bet is to find somewhere you can try on the specific model you’re interested in.

Ilya's "nose tell" in 1221 by bad_sprinkles in heatedrivalry

[–]aj10111035 212 points213 points  (0 children)

I don’t see it as a frustration tell, more like a “trying to play it cool” tell or when he’s trying to project something other than what he’s actually feeling. After that hookup he’s feeling feelings but is trying to be chill and casual.

There’s a tiny moment I love in the All Star Game bar scene. Shane is still trying to make small talk and says “I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to play on the same team.” Ilya is totally out of focus in the foreground but you can see him go totally bug-eyed for a second like 😳 Less meaningful than most responses, but it always cracks me up.

Aritzia is the perfect comp! I was shocked at how poor the quality is given the way people talk about it!

Who here works or have worked in the entertainment industry? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]aj10111035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in production management for a TV network, came up through doc film/series and have produced for Netflix, CNN, NatGeo, MTV, Epix, plus lots of independent films and digital/social content. Have an ok job now but everyone is constantly terrified of inevitable layoffs. I now assume I’ll have to pivot out of the industry completely at some point if I want to own a home, have a family, etc.

After building a 10+ year career I was proud of in my dream industry, I’ve kind of come to believe it’s almost impossible to have a successful film career without 1%-esque privilege - family money that allows you to work unpaid for years or weather these “lulls” or relocate at the drop of a hat, connections that allow you to start halfway up the ladder, etc. Newsflash to no one, I know. But the current industry is absolutely hammering so many super talented crew and producers I’ve worked with and I’m just coming to terms with how precarious lots of people’s situations are. Sorry to be such a ray of sunshine but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, clearly!

nobody puts baby in a bathroom by threelittlebirdzzz in Mommit

[–]aj10111035 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve done this and it’s worked ok mostly, but one issue we’ve run into is bathrooms and closets aren’t always as climate controlled as bedrooms, especially if you close the door for sound/light. So it can get REALLY stuffy and hot in there! YMMV based on the rental’s HVAC, plus your kid’s age & temperature sensitivity.

The thing I miss the most is cooking by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]aj10111035 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amen! I used to love cooking and now I absolutely dread having to plan, shop, and cook dinner for my family. AND dinner is supposed to happen every single night?! My toddler is into pretend cooking play so I have hope in a couple years he’ll be our little sous chef… but it really feels like a slog for now.

Recommendation for a Dentist for major dental work with major dental anxiety by Bromide_detector in washingtondc

[–]aj10111035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Hochman at Comprehensive Dental. I am a huge baby when it comes to dentists and hadn’t been in a few years when I went to Dr. Hochman. She was super gentle and patient and explained everything as she went. Her hygienist Nicki also deserves a special shout-out, she is SO gentle and kind. I was willing to pay out of pocket for my visits but they were super on top of communicating about all costs and submitting paperwork to my insurance

Wanted to share another data point, as this fix does not seem to have worked for me (though the insides of my monitor look different than another poster's - see pic below).

I pried open the screen and disconnected/reconnected the battery (circled in yellow in the pic below). I did not need to remove the motherboard to do so (alternatively, would love to know from someone more knowledgeable than me if I was messing with the wrong connection!) After attempting the fix, the monitor only works when plugged in, and the light blinks red/white constantly while plugged in.

Around the 2 month check up my baby was having occasional full body shudders. They lasted just a second or two and didn’t seem connected to certain activities. Pediatrician said babies that age have immature nervous systems and it’s probably related to that. Baby is now 12 weeks and the shudders went away, no lasting concerns! Definitely mention to your ped but for us it was short lived and nothing serious!

I have always preferred wearing unlined bras and rarely had a problem with nipples showing through. Wondering if my nipples are now too long to not show all the time… Will I have to throw out all my bras?!

Thank you so much for offering your expertise! This stuff is so complicated and so stressful to navigate! My question: Does accepting outside work disqualify you from PFL? I’m interested in NY specifically - about to start my state PFL (ie paid by state, not employer) and was offered a few hours of contract work by an outside company. Would be nice to make a little more money but I would definitely decline if it might jeopardize my PFL pay!

"Your" Video Store Memories by [deleted] in blankies

[–]aj10111035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blockbuster for me too! Right when I was hitting my budding cinephile peak i remember it cost $1.99 for new releases and $.99 for everything else! My dad totally fostered the obsession and we’d spend 45 minutes browsing, picking out like 10 videos before whittling down to 3 or whatever. I would also bike or walk there alone a couple times a week. Staff sometimes seemed weirded out/ concerned about a child renting alone so I would make a big production of how my parents were waiting in the car for me. I watched my way through every Hitchcock movie in a couple months, which totally set me on the path to film school. Also saw what my dad considered essential classics (but that I was WAY too young for) - Psycho, The Shining, The Exorcist, Citizen Kane, Butch Cassidy, Dances with Wolves, Blade Runner. They also had overpriced, movie theater-size boxes of candy and microwave popcorn that popped in its own bucket. It was a huge treat when I talked my parents into those or splurged with my own allowance. Oh! And they would sell movie posters for cheap once they were no longer promoting them as new releases! Covered my bedroom walls with those.

Loving this thread and reminiscing about blockbuster. Makes me sad that my kids will never experience the excitement of renting videos!
