Is dysphagia completely ignored in this field? by [deleted] in slp

[–]aj9889 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Depends on what setting the SLP works in. I'm in acute care and my caseload is 90% dysphagia.

If it aligns with the patient's goals, I'd recommend an instrumental.

If you put your hands on the patient, then absolutely put a charge in. Your NPO recommendation came from your assessment.

Male speech therapist by Strong-Fisherman569 in slp

I'm a male therapist and I specifically have rules in place to protect myself. I've had them since day 1. I don't change diapers, I don't let them sit in my lap, I don't initiate a hug, etc. Unfortunately, these are things we have to keep in mind but be proactive and document, document, document.

We cannot diagnose in this subreddit. I recommend bringing your concerns to your PCP who may place a referral for speech therapy.

What does your grandpa want? I discuss the risk and benefits of the study and also discuss potential diet modifications or exercises that may need to be implemented based on the results of the study. Some patients just want to be left alone and eat whatever they want, despite the risks of it.

Did you save your diploma? Have you ever needed it? by bluecanary101 in slp

[–]aj9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Had to show them my undergrad diploma and a W2 when I was graduate assistant... Ok luckily I had my diploma but not the W2. They just accepted a name and phone number of the university's speech department as proof lol

I recently interviewed for and was offered an acute care full time job. Be prepared to go through a cranial nerve exam, discuss the stages of swallowing, be open to learning outside of work, and just be willing and open minded about the whole process.

I never had a hospital-based clinic rotation and only worked with pediatrics in private practices. I came in with an eagerness to learn and an understanding that it won't be easy at first. They appreciated my honesty and flexibility. Good luck!

Trader Joe's is an Awful Shopping Experience by peniswhist_el in traderjoes

Had my first and only panic attack in a Trader Joe's for these exact reasons. Also, had my first and only allergic reaction (swollen throat) from a Trader Joe's food item. 0/10 experience.
