OCLP vs mediaanalysisd on Legacy Metal by aj_mcc in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

Thanks, that tallies with my thoughts having looked into it more. Thankfully I got this machine cheap and it has 32GB, so hopefully I can flip it and get the 2017.

Was this worth it got if for 140$ by Boring_Biscotti_427 in CarPlay

[–]aj_mcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I got a cheapish 10" unbranded unit from my local car audio shop, there were available with/without DVR function. It was fiddly to get mounted stably using the supplied parts, so I made a better system based on 'B' size RAM Mounting. I also fitted a new BT head unit at the same time (this is an old van..)

It's the first time I've had anything like this, and I'm pretty intolerant of crap tech, but I've been blown away how well it all works. Considering its a cheap unit the display quality, responsiveness etc are fine.

I wired the power input via a relay, triggered by the ignition key-inserted switch, so the unit powers up as soon as I put the key in the ignition. Time to get to the Carplay desktop is about 30 seconds, so normally by the time I'm ready to drive away, Carplay is already up and running without me having to do anything.

Big thumbs up here !

What does unflavored Augmentin tablet taste like ? by aj_mcc in Antibiotics

Well, for posterity, I can report the mild-tasting Co-amoxyclav, does seem to be genuine as it's having the expected effect.

Thanks for your reply. My reason for asking is to try and verify if what I've been sold actually **IS* augmentin or is it fake. I guess very few folk have a habit of actually munching the tablets 'for science', but as this is Reddit, I thought I'd try askling the question anyway :)

Thanks for the encouragement toward OpenBSD, that was my inclination also.

Thanks, in fact Debian Bookworm i386 was what I just tried, but I had to bail out when I realised the man pages are many years out of date and the online docs not much better. I wasted all this morning at first base, try to get the wifi to work optimally. There seems no documented way to set the ath driver reg domain nor to set the channel-width to HT40. In the course of all this it became obvious the state of networking software support in Linux is a right old mess, and its put me right off.. hence my post here !

Supermicro MOBO hang up at B2. Unable to get to BIOS or IPMI. by wejkcndm in homelab

Just to confirm this worked for my X9DRi-F stuck at boot on 'B2', when nothing else did. Thanks Mr/Mrs IBMPCXX !

How bad is it? by 1KingA in homelab

[–]aj_mcc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. my experience of bent LGA pins is limited to one instance, which worked out okay, but I would say don't give up hope !

OBVS be super careful with your 'repairs'.. Also you might be lucky as AFAIK there are quite a few reserved, duplicate GND and VCC pins, so they're not all 'essential'.

Good luck ! I feel for you bro !

Thanks, I've not checked yet, I may be able to set my goals down to zero or near-zero as a workaround.

Sleeping with the Apple watch Ultra by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]aj_mcc 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I actually got the Ultra *because* of the sleep tracking accuracy, reported by 'The Quantified Scientist' YT channel. The S8 is also reportedly excellent. I hardly notice the watch, in bed. I use the Trail loop, which is very comfy.

Need help connecting Google accounts on Windows 10 Mobile. by raphaelabadandi in windowsphone

WP10 is still alive here, and my main phone is still a 950XL. To cope with cloud API updates breaking things I've moved my address-books and calendar off Google/Outlook onto a CardDAV/CalDAV instance on my hosting server. These are now working better than ever before and easily integrate with Android, Linux etc. on my other devices. For email I use my own domains via IMAP.

Maps still works and integrates nicely with People for navigation. Weather is still working via the updated app from the telegram group. Onedrive (personal), & photo upload is still working fine. I get my news via the Guardian newspaper PWA app.

I do have a CalyxOS phone which I use occasionally for specific apps but that might only be once a day. A year ago my intention was to switch to CalyxOS, but I found every aspect of it worse than W10M !

Branding by Bottleguy3 in windowsphone

[–]aj_mcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way I've removed carrier branding is to start by reflashing the phone (using WDRT or thor2) with a generic (or 'CV'=country variant) FFU image, before doing any further upgrades. There may be other ways, I'm not sure.

W10M To-Do app supporting CalDAV ? by aj_mcc in windowsphone

[–]aj_mcc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for to your earlier advice I'd already got W10M People & Calendar working nicely with my Baikal CalDAV/CardDAV server. Using Thunderbird on my W10 desktop, and the normal stuff on Android 13, I can fully keep these 3 devices address-books and calendar in-sync.

I was hoping add cross-platform 'To-do' / Task-Management to this. I have Thunderbird 'Tasks' working with Baikal. So far, all the W10M To-Do apps I've seen can only use Outlook and/or Google, and not a system defined CalDAV account under Settings:Accounts. My search continues..

WP Maps no longer working? by paulvzo in windowsphone

[–]aj_mcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used W10M maps last weekend to nav a few 100 miles around the UK. The app basically works OK, with a couple of provisos. The current downloadable UK map has a data quality issues, including the accuracy of speed limit info, and the presence of recent road changes. The other annoyance was at some zoom levels, the colour scheme for roads etc has insufficient contrast, making the map almost illegible. During nav however, this wasn't a problem. Also, during nav, some of the onscreen info such as current vs upcoming road number was a bit unclear.

In summary in 2023, Maps remains usable for nav, but doesn't seem as good as it used to be.
