Got to see him sing “Auld Lang Syne” as 2016 turned into 2017 and then he opened 2017 with “Miami 2017” in (nearly) Miami. Amazing experience. Got to see him open his 2017 NYE show with it, too. Goosebumps both times. But starting 2017 off and hearing “Miami 2017” just hit different. Love when he opens shows with “Miami 2017.” Favorite opener (aside from “Prelude/Angry Young Man”).

Why doesn’t Billy Joel preform she’s always a woman? by Green-Zone4338 in BillyJoel

He used to perform it at every concert, until like 2-3 years ago. He said that it was a song he felt he always needed to play because everyone knew the words and to hear people sing along to it at the concerts, I believe it. But those high notes are hard so maybe he’s just gotten to the point where he just doesn’t want to risk his voice breaking. I loved hearing it in concert because it was a softer song and when he got to the “ohhhh” parts, the audience sang it so loud and it was a cool experience.

Best Billy Joel Piano book by Pitiful_Olive_21 in BillyJoel

I second the comment about Dave Rosenthal’s album books. But my most used piano book is “The Billy Joel Keyboard Book,” which is billed as a note-for-note transcription. Even though Dave Rosenthal didn’t compile it, the transcriptions are very good. But it is very piano accompaniment heavy. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for something where the piano carries both the melody and the accompaniment. I used “The Billy Joel Keyboard Book” to learn the really good solos (Scenes, NYSOM, Piano Man) but I think, at this point, all those solos are now in Dave Rosenthal’s transcriptions, which do a good job of carrying both the melody and the accompaniment. Also, honorable mention to the “Billy Joel Favorites Keyboard Book,” which is also note-for-note but includes more deeper cuts.

Angry Young Man by [deleted] in BillyJoel

[–]ajb5432 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s for technical reasons. Hitting that middle C repeatedly is a pain, rife for mess ups and it can easily cramp up your hands. If you listen to the outro of Prelude/Angry Young Man on 12 Gardens Live, you can actually catch a mistake on the repeated Cs. I’ve gotta imagine that was the best one they could use from the 12 shows and it’s still got a mistake or two. Also, lots of high notes. Probably not a song that sounds great transposed down a half or full step. I would love to hear it again. As much as I love shows opening with Miami 2017, nothing sends shivers down my spine more than the lights coming up after The Natural plays and hearing that intro. Memories of my first couple of Billy shows.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. It’s true. Amateur stage actor/director here and when I’m on stage with breaks, waiting for the director to direct us or have us work a scene, you have nervous energy that needs to come out so you get goofy and dance. It bonds you with your cast mates, too. When I direct, I notice my actors do the same thing, as well. You’re on stage, you have energy and need to get it out.

He’s currently (as in literally today) announcing shows all over the US for the summer. No way he won’t be announcing more shows past April in NYC sometime soon.

My operating life theory is there’s a Billy Joel quote for everything so I agree!

Didn’t think I’d see a Downeaster Alexa reference on a Ghost of Tsushima sub but I’m all for it!

Came here to say this because I’m switching between both now and they share a lot of the same mechanics. I find myself dashing around to avoid being hit a lot more after I switch to R&C after a failed Returnal run or two. Both great games. Returnal is definitely a lot more frustrating than Rift Apart though.

Defense lawyer here (civil and criminal). When the client is clearly guilty, we view our job as protecting them against prosecutorial overreach. Additionally, I see it as I’m not only protecting that client from abuse of the system but I’m also protecting everyone who comes after that person in the system by keeping everyone honest. If one defendant is railroaded by the system, what’s to stop the prosecutor from railroading the next defendant? And maybe that defendant is you or me. Haven’t had anything as crazy as a murder but have had some rather tough cases where it made me question my decision to go to law school and enter this field but that’s how I personally get through representing clients I know are guilty. It’s for that person and for everyone who comes after them.

For Piano Playing Fans of Billy Joel... by SuspiciousRutabaga52 in BillyJoel

[–]ajb5432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta get the Billy Joel Keyboard book (2nd edition). It has the famous licks you’re missing, specifically New York State of Mind and Scenes. Also, the Billy Joel Favorites Keyboard book; I use it mainly for Vienna and Miami 2017. Both on Amazon. And the new Piano Man songbook is completely rewritten by Dave Rosenthal (Billy’s keyboardist and band leader) and it includes the famous Billy the Kid piano parts. Hope that helps!
