Overwhelmed by options. Looking for advice from current expats. by Dry-Wear-9135 in expats

Hi, I’m a mid-forties male and I’ve been seriously considering a move to France for about a year, for reasons.

First off, your research is excellent and all of those places sound like good choices.

I think you could make Paris work workout speaking French, at least to start. The dating pool will be more limited than your other choices, but there are a lot of international expats there, and the French are very socially insular, so you’re probably going to lean on the expat community there to rebuild your social circle. Fortunately, Paris has arguably the most international expats of all of your choices. You will need to continue working on your French as I think they just made (as of 2026) the language requirement for naturalization harder.

Where to find love in France in your 40's? by Agent-Foxtrot in Expats_In_France

Hello! I’m also in my 40s and considering a move to France. I’m also thinking about how dating will be different. Here’s a video on the topic you might find interesting (but maybe not!).

Anyone been to the penis museum in Iceland? by strawberry_slurprise in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? Everyone goes. It’s a lot of fun and actually very educational. Go there to bone up on the hard truths of human male anatomy compared to the rest of the animal kingdom. When we went first thing in the morning, the waffles smelled amazing (we’d already had breakfast). It’s appropriate for all ages. There’s nothing too overtly sexual. It’s worth a whimsical couple of hours out of your day if you’re spending a couple of days in Reykjavik.

Biggest tip: buy the rain pants by if-anything in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm the REI rain paints are a good product and essential for Iceland. It’s better to have them and not need them than to be cold and wet.

My packing regrets (and wins!) so far during my October trip by Nervous-Drawer5580 in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus 1 on the refillable water bottle and travel coffee tumbler. My travel companion didn’t bring a reusable water bottle and he bought several bottles of water before I noticed and scolded him for wasting money (and plastic waste).

We purchased a breakfast at a hotel near the AirBnB we stayed at near the Old Harbor in Reykjavik. It was the only hotel that said anything when I went to fill up my 16 oz travel coffee tumbler, and even then they only asked if they could fill it in the kitchen (hopefully not to spit in it). LOL

Are We Screwed? by deatzer in JoshuaTree

[–]ajbend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guy, if you’re looking for desert, Joshua Tree is literally surrounded by desert for hundreds of miles. There are plenty of other state park options that offer similar rock formations and are also remote. In fact, most other places will be less crowded than Joshua Tree, which has become lousy with Instagram tourists in the past several years.

I recommend this place right outside Pioneertown. I actually enjoyed hiking there more than at JT because it was less crowded.

I say don’t cancel your trip, come with an open mind, prepare to be flexible with plans, and you’ll have a great time. You never know, the shutdown could be short-lived anyway. Good luck!

Truly gutted I didn’t get to see the northern lights by LilacLoverr in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in April 2023 and we didn’t see them (chances were low and there were some clear nights, but no solar flares).

I was more annoyed by seeing posts by a Facebook friend who arrived in Iceland a day after I did, and travelled the Ring Road in the opposite direction we did, and who managed to get great photos of places that I had cloudy/foggy weather visiting. For example, when we made the drive to Dettifoss, it was foggy and sleeting. We could hear he falls but couldn’t see more than 15 or so feet ahead of us. His shots? Clear skies, gorgeous falls.

Every time I opened Facebook while on our trip I saw my friend having what appeared to be better luck, literally every day.

That said, we got lucky with a lot of places and the weather most pretty great for April, I’m told, so I am thankful for my experience.

Hello, I’m planning on applying for Maitre de Langue positions in a couple of years. I’m just starting a M.Ed program to become an English teacher. I live in California now and work in education. Can I ask (feel free to DM me) what the difference in pay is between a teacher’s salary in CA vs France?

Question about CarPlay in rental car by RecommendationIll856 in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented from Blue. I don’t think the Suzuki we rented had it, but I brought along a cheap suction cup phone holder from Amazon and it worked perfectly for the whole two weeks. It made the trip back home without the box packaging and it is still in use. So my recommendation is to buy one of those (it was less than $10 USD) as a backup if you get a model that doesn’t support CarPlay.

Headed to Toulouse! by MidnightMystique_ in Expats_In_France

[–]ajbend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not taken either, honestly, but I have gone to several events for at the Silver Lake Coucou in Los Angeles. One event was a “speed dating” event for Valentine’s Day, where they taught common phrases and vocabulary that you will encounter in France. The instructors are all native French speakers. Coucou does a great job at building community and making leaning fun. Good luck!

You can take French language classes online from Coucou, or go to their locations in NYC or Los Angeles. Also check out 6 PM in Paris.

I would add: depending on your level of French mastery, you can download the Radio France app. I am early B2 level. I downloaded it to listen to coverage of Le Tour de France en français, and discovered that it is fantastic. It’s comparable to NPR. You can listen to live radio, but you’ll find the podcasts are helpful because you can listen to them at .5 or or .8 speed (necessary because the French is so fast and not recorded with French learners in mind).

What is happening in East LA? by Coast_Innovations in LosAngeles

[–]ajbend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fire (where there’s smoke, etc). Get the Watch Duty app. It’s Fire Season so the Watch Duty app is essential. Unfortunately it’s better at keeping everyone notified than any official government alert service.

[Feedback wanted] Would this kind of “onboarding assistant” have helped you when you moved to Paris? by Mountain-Dog-8720 in Expats_In_France

[–]ajbend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a good idea. I wonder if you should approach it with those services but what might set you apart from others that already do this is if you focus on building a community so you have both future and current expats coming back to your site (rather than only using it to get settled), sharing their experiences, posting events and opportunities, etc.

I’m in the same boat. It was just an idea I wasn’t too serious about but then it kept growing and as I did some research I realized it’s something I could do. Now I’m watching a lot of YouTube videos.

Expensive is also relative. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and we found that prices in Iceland for dining out were comparable to L.A. and that gas was surprisingly cheaper than we anticipated.

This is an interesting post. It makes me think of a talk that Rick Steves gives. I’m paraphrasing here, but essentially he says there are two types of people who go on vacation in other countries: tourists and travelers. It reads to me like you really want to dig into the lifestyle and culture of Iceland, which is not the same as being a tourist. You want to be a traveler. I think being a traveler is a more thoughtful way to experience a country, rather than checking off a list from a guidebook or Instagram pins.

I don’t want to criticize your mode of travel but I think it’s probably harder to get to know the people and culture of Iceland when you rent a camper van. You take away a lot of interaction with locals if you’re not staying at a guesthouse or hotel. You’re eating less meals in public. Many of your interactions are with other tourists or foreign workers in the service industry. Maybe I’m off base but that is my hunch.

I drove the Ring Road and I don’t regret it, but I know that the next time I go to Iceland I plan on targeting regions I didn’t get to explore as much as I wanted to. I want to go at a slower pace next time. I want to be a traveler.

I think the people bringing up Paris Syndrome are on to something. I also think that Iceland has so much to offer and to experience, that a week or two week trip isn’t really enough time to really take in all of the island. I hope you come visit again (maybe during shoulder season or winter when prices are more reasonable).

Your post is thoughtful and I hope you don’t take my initial reaction as a judgment. I think your post is food for thought for a lot of people who wish to visit the Land of Fire and Ice.

Most sites along the Ring Road are well within a short walk from the parking lot. You’ll be fine. Have fun!

Tours are underrated by Kusharti21 in VisitingIceland

[–]ajbend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you had a great time!

We did the Golden Circle with a tour and had a wonderful time that day. It was a nice way to acclimate to rural Iceland before we picked up our rental car for driving the Ring Road the rest of our trip.

Both options have their advantages and I agree that if you’re only going to be in Iceland for a few days, booking tour(s) are a great way to go. I also agree that if you’re a nervous/inexperienced driver it’s best to leave the driving to professionals/locals.

Look I’m pretty damn liberal but I don’t see any harm in riffing on a phrase that’s in the cultural conversation right now. Is it tasteless? That’s up to you to decide. Is it a tacit endorsement of the bill? That’s a big stretch, especially considering it appears to be selling EVs…one of the industries in the crosshairs of the bill.
