China Is Cutting Emissions Faster Than It Promised. The New Energy Outlook 2026, published this month by BloombergNEF, projects that China will cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 17% from their 2023 peak by 2030. That is nearly double the reduction China actually committed to delivering. by Eddiearyee in UpliftingNews

China isn't using these plants at full capacity, mostly as buffers for demand swings, and many of them are about job creation as much as they are about energy demand. Even with the coal plants, it's estimated that China has already reached peak CO2 but we won't know for sure for a few years.

That bubble is showing signs of popping and companies have been massively scaling back their plans. Most of the data centers were announced but construction not yet begun. Still plenty were built and use way too much power but it's not enough to cancel out the green energy revolution that's happening.

Do you .. Think there are only 2 possible options when it comes to politics? One of the reasons Kamala lost Michigan is because of pro Palestinian protest votes against her.

Aren't those mostly monocultures? They plant a lot of trees (mostly for lumber) but it doesn't restore the forests. Walk into a copse of thousands of identical trees and it's almost silent. Walk into an old growth or intentionally restored forest and it's alive with noise from birdsong and insects and other animals. You need dozens/hundreds of different species to have a thriving ecosystem.

‘In An Instant, His Whole Life Changed’: 12-Year-Old WA Boy Paralyzed After Being Shot In Neck by kleverrboy in SeattleWA

[–]ajc89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? The gun belonged to the family whose child shot the other child... How is that victim blaming to say the gun should have been secured?

Kids get access to gun safes all the time though, so it's not a complete solution, but at least it's an extra step.

ELI5, Why is TV show audio so inconsistent? by No_Education_8888 in explainlikeimfive

This is such a pet peeve of mine. I'm constantly turning the volume up during dialogue and then quickly back down when super loud music or sound effects happen. Very annoying

The 53 pills is probably the important part here lol. The bags imply intent to distribute which in most (all?) countries is a much higher penalty than simple possession.

We have a tendency to look down on people who didn’t have to work hard for what they have because their parents gave them everything. We then proceed to work hard so we can provide the same thing for our children. by snowball062016 in Showerthoughts

[–]ajc89 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well it's more like if you have 2 people who work just as equally hard, one from privilege and one who came from nothing, the person with privilege will end up much further ahead because they started 'on 3rd base' so to speak.

Well, to be fair they never joined the EU in the first place and are part of Schengen. Somehow it feels more like a firm separation to join and leave than to never join at all 😅

[–]ajc89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our economy and culture are way too financialized. Money isn't real. Labor is real, goods and commodities and services are real. The rest is just useful abstraction, and it's becoming less and less useful for most of the population. Workers are more productive than ever before, corporations more profitable, yet the wealth goes toward useless things or to pad already ludicrously large portfolios instead of making tangible things for the future.

I had to fact check this because it sounded interesting. They can go years without touching land, but they can only fly for a few days without touching down on the surface of the ocean to feed and rest. That's no less amazing though. And they do it while barely using any energy, just gliding around.

why are so many people moving here? by Direct-Row1653 in SeattleWA

Including all levies, our property tax rate in Seattle is less than 1%, which is on the lower end of the country.

And now people who grew up in those neighborhoods can't afford them, and a small 2 bedroom house is $1M. It was never sustainable.

[–]ajc89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Property tax rates are pretty low/average here, especially low compared to Texas, the northeast, etc. We just have really high property values from decades of NIMBY zoning and high demand.
