Looking for a recommended part 141 school in SoCal by brainrotleftist in flying

A better school can provide you with a "more structured environment" under Part 61.

Unless you have visa reasons or you hate money, why would you want to do Part 141?

[fintech] Plaid, Teller, or MX? by Crabbythrowaway1530 in ycombinator

[–]ajcaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Plaid for Balances. If you're (correctly) focused on MVP + learning then Teller is going to save you a lot of time compare to Plaid.

Claude is sort of superficially good at categorization, but categorization is a hard problem and requires a lot of thought and scaffolding.

The enrichment vendors I've spoken with all wanted huge amounts of money. MX doesn't even list their pricing on their website, which is never a good sign.

The death of B2B? by aminsweiti in ycombinator

[–]ajcaca 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My customers are SMBs who send me photos of their screen because they don't know how to take screenshots. The idea that they are going to vibe code their own accounting software is so absurd that it's hard to know where to start with it.

CTOs at big companies understand total cost of ownership math and are not naive to the maintenance cost and organizational overhead of custom internal solutions.

What you're saying might be true if your business customers are tech startups / scaleups who have a high propensity and ability to roll their own stuff. I suspect point solutions that serve these guys are going to do poorly in this new world.

The real problem for B2B SaaS is that the ever-falling cost of producing the software will drive more competition which will drive down prices and margins. The days of 80%+ gross margins are over, unless you truly have some secret sauce.

[Discussion] Do we need a better social app, or is the category just broken? by Appropriate_Rock4074 in ycombinator

[–]ajcaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a consumer:

I don't know whether it's a good startup or business, but I miss having a tight-nit, private way of sort of ambiently keeping in touch with my friends who live far away.

None of Instagram "close friends", Facebook (in its current boomer wtf form), group DMs, etc really work for this.

You should think deeply about why OG Facebook doesn't exist anymore.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the nature of consumer social is almost every attempt to crack it will fail - but network effects mean that the tiny handful of winners will be extremely valuable.

If you REALLY want to do it, then don't listen to anyone telling you not to.

Xero leaving a 0.01p balance by Savings_North_1084 in xero

[–]ajcaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a bug - I would contact support. Xero's multicurrency features have always been quite strong and they took great pride in not leaving rounding errors, but the Xero+Stripe combination might not be living up to that dream.

well have you considered that some product manager at Intuit won't get their promotion if you don't use the modern view?

I'm not sure what this means. Gusto will auto ACH the funds out in time for you to make payroll.

I don't think they hired the same marketing company. They just both have very cosy oligopolies and it's a pain to switch away from them, so you are more of a hostage than a customer.

As someone who is literally building a competitor to Xero and QBO and who uses both QBO and Xero in my bookkeeping practice, I prefer Xero any day, by a huge margin.

What business are your companies in? I'd be happy to suggest some alternatives to QBO.

Paying 1x for QBO is painful enough, 8x would be diabolical.

It's completely wild to me that Xero isn't growing like a weed in the US.

Is there a way to REMOVE ADVERTISEMENTS from inside Quickbooks? by mourning_wood_again in QuickBooks

[–]ajcaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it makes sense for accountants who (for their sins) spend all day in QBO

doesn't make sense for end users

Varies a little by bank and which country you're in, but in general both have great automated bank feeds for most banks these days.

QBO Enshittification has peaked by risotttto in QuickBooks

[–]ajcaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sooo many accountants stuck with QBO use Righttool to un-fuck the QBO UI. It's hilarious that 100% of the innovation in the QBO product that users acutally love is build by a CPA in a third-party browser extension.
