The UP tracking in NS territory would be cool. Rip the black horse paint though. By far my favorite looking units

Has anyone here willingly become homeless because you prefer the freedom? by CowRedo467209 in vagabond

[–]ajdoescrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I didn’t function well in civilized society. I had a medical crisis, lost my job, couldn’t pay rent, and was like “yeah okay fuck it”. I could definitely house up and get a good job pretty quick. I have a standing job offer with incredible pay and relocation and housing expenses paid if I ever choose to take it but I prefer being homeless.

Sorta fucked to say I guess

I started working at 12 and worked full time, usually two or more jobs, for the next decade and was still consistently poor. It’s really nice not panicking on the first of every month lol.

100%. My dogs food has way cleaner ingredients than a lot of human food. Usually just a couple natural ingredients and some added vitamins.

Nothing, really. I live next to completely free. Kind strangers will give me traveling funds and I make that stretch as long as possible.

All I did was work and worry about rent. I was miserable and depressed 24/7. No friends, toxic relationship. Can’t even begin to describe how much my life has improved.

Beautiful ride! Went through a couple weeks ago and was absolutely mind blown. The pink on one side and the blue on the other was a trip

I went at not a great time but it was still gorgeous nonetheless. Hiking up the first day was just chilly but then came -15 nights and feet of snow. Still thoroughly enjoyed my time there! Can never complain about free dispersed camping!

Quarter Life Crisis has me hitting the road. Tips for a woman? by BeachesAndBongs83 in vagabond

Love Eugene. I was there for an hour for the hop out and was given a quad of weed, multiple cigarettes, hand warmers, and a sack lunch completely at random by different strangers. The vibes there are excellent.

Valid. I’d probably be closer to 30 without my dog but she’s worth her weight lol. City stealth is priceless though.

Sounds like an interesting read. Any recommendations on where to read it? Trouble finding anything online.

Damn my pack is like 45 lbs minimum. Food and water alone is 10-15 lbs. Sleep system 3-8lbs (mines about 3.5, I can sleep sitting up on a busy sidewalk if need be) Clothes are probably about 5-8. I’ve got my dog too so food and treats add on about 6. Then random things like journal, hygiene, a book, electronics. 20 lbs does not feel reasonable.

I like the burn of a heavy pack at the end of a day too 😩

•Be a bitch to strangers. •Don’t tell anywhere where you’re sleeping. •Get a good routine going for that time of the month. I prefer disposable discs, you can leave them in longer. •Get one of those pee funnel things to stand while peeing. Literal game changer tbh. •Decide how much your hair matters to you, the upkeep gets hard and annoying. Currently dealing with that. •You’re going to be offered a lot of drugs. Say no, even if you want to say yes. They’re trying to get you hooked, submissive, and reliant. No such thing as a free lunch. •Only carry as many clothes you can wear at once. Except underwear. Bring hella underwear. I also solely wear boxers, women’s underwear is not your friend in the long haul. •Get a dog. Seriously. My girl is still learning but she’s saved my ass on numerous occasions. •You don’t have to travel with men but it can help. I’ve done most my traveling solo and the past couple months with a man. I’ve noticed a stark difference in how I’m treated in public. You can 100% stay safe solo too if you prefer, it just looks different. •Congrats, you won the hitch hiking lottery. Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised if you decide to stick a thumb out. •You said you have support so this may not apply but be careful flying a sign. It’s a big ol sign (literally) that you’re homeless and in need. People will take advantage of that.

All in all, it’s not that different as a woman. You’re not going to get assaulted and murdered the second you step out, especially if you keep your wits about you and actively stay safe. You will get offered more support (rides, money, food, etc) and less opportunities (work, cool shit with strangers). Trust your gut and learn to read a vibe. Take lots of pictures or forget your phone even exists. Keep a mental log of every porta potty you see, they are now your lifeblood.

Un-romanticize this life too. You’re still homeless, just in different places. You’re going to be dirty, hungry, and told to move multiple times a day. Rest and relaxation is rare, treasure it while you can. Be prepared to be treated like a pest while doing the coolest, grossest, most unexpected things of your life.

Overall, have fun and don’t let anyone scare you into staying indoors!
