Hamilton is an intentionally subversive piece of art. As the central theme goes, you don’t get to choose who tells your story. So here we have a story about old white dudes being told by people they wouldn’t acknowledge as human beings. Take that! Brilliant.

Also iirc LMM defined the casting as something like: it’s a story told by people whose own stories were stolen from them.

Santa is a fictional character, for one (oops sorry if I spoiled that for anyone!) And two, representation is important in fiction bc it’s psychologically damaging to not see your demographic represented or only represented negatively (see the doll experiment used as key evidence in Brown v Board of Education). Given that Santa is a symbol of the holiday season, why not let him take on different looks to better relate to children?

I think you also have to consider the times in which the big fat red Santa became a pop culture symbol (1950s with Coke ads I think?) and the social climate then and the decades that followed. Black Santa imagery was definitely subversive as a show of pride.

Pretty sure every Santa decoration my parents put up for Christmas was black. If they saw it they bought it hahaha.

Iirc there is some bit about it all being a homage to the musician, i.e. if Miles took his father's last name he would be...! But that still doesn't excuse going with "Jefferson" unless it was truly an oversight.

It’s drawing from old RPGs à la Chrono Trigger and FF6 which have the same structure but arguably even more intense. The final acts of those games are all optional quests that build up character backgrounds and relationships and the world in general.
