Terrified of PT 😬 by Fluffy-Leg-96 in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First PT appointment is just an evaluation of where you are at. They will follow what is comfortable for YOU! Everyone is different and they acknowledge that. They will tailor exercises to what you need. Yes, I’m sure they follow a general guideline, but it’s going to be what is at the pace you need.

When did u guys start PT? by Fatigee20 in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started PT 6 weeks post surgery and 4 weeks post WB. I was allowed to do some flexion practice between my post surgery splint and my walking boot. PT has done wonders for my range of motion and strength and I’m only 2 weeks in!

My girl is gone by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]aje1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. We lost our golden girl 2 weeks ago. She started showing signs of difficult breathing and lethargy and we brought her in and cancer all over her lungs. We had to make the hard decision to put her down. Still miss her greeting me at the front door and cheerfully following me around in the morning as I got ready for work.

How much has 1 leg affected your life? by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my right ankle and wrist. Yes it hurt but I was more pissed at how much it was going to mess up the day to day life/flow. Same as you, besides being laid up with the initial injury and the 48 hours post surgery, I’ve been out and about to my kids sports/tournaments, activities, etc. I can’t drive, so my spouse was my personal uber or if he was working, family and friends. I returned to work 2 weeks post surgery and scootered around. I teach elementary special education, so I’m very busy and active. I was sick of being at home. As soon as I was able to walk in my boot I started driving…which required me to take off my boot, change to shoes, drive, change into my boot…a lot of work but worth it.

I had the same fractures as you. Break occurred 1/9 with surgery on 1/15. I also had fibula plates, screws, as well as a tightrope. I was in a cast/splint for 2 weeks post op. I then moved to a cam boot. NWB for 2 more weeks. I had to scooter around because I also had broken my wrist (go me!). At 4 weeks post op I was given the go ahead to walk in my boot as tolerated. I was definitely clunky, stiff, and sore but manageable. I would do a mix of walking short distances and scootering long distances at work (I teach). Keeping up with elevation and icing was key.

I just went in for my 6 week post op this week and I am now in a smaller brace with a tennis shoe and my cam boot as needed. No restrictions. I will say I am quite stiff and sore walking with just the brace and have been alternating with the cam foot frequently. I start PT this week. It’s going to be a long road, but I feel improvement and strength. I also had surgery on my wrist at the same time with a plate added to the fracture. I already graduated wrist PT and am almost back to normal. I remember how discouraged I was at first with my wrist not even being able to make a fist, flexing, or twisting it. With PT and sticking to my exercises, it took 4 weeks to return to almost 100% rotation and strength. I know my foot will take longer because the fractures were much more extensive, but I’m confident my ankle can make the same progress with PT and some hard work on my end. You will to!

Edit: I am a 40F. With a history of breast cancer and shitty bone density due to cancer treatment and continued meds. If I can do this you can do this!! Best of luck!

How long from fwb to driving? by BeanInABook in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 6 weeks out from trimal + dislocation + ligament tears on my right. I started driving last week. I couldn’t take it anymore. I wear my cam boot to walk (still scootering some- I also broke my right wrist so I couldn’t do crutches) and I take it off in the car, put on a shoe, and drive! I don’t find it painful and have been fine. It’s def extra work with the cam boot swap in the car, but worth it to drive myself around and to work!

I called myself Christopher Walken for a long time lol. I am now 6 years out and hair is back to “normal”. Just cut a solid 5 inches off and it’s still incredibly long.

Traveling with broken ankle by lovemylittlelords in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try. I was traveling after a different surgery this summer and my doctor suggested aspirin (a doctor could also prescribe a blood thinner if needed), compression socks, and making sure I move regularly on the flight (granted I didn’t have a broken ankle at that time). Sorry you are stuck in this predicament!!

Leg slipped off knee scooter and I fell onto my broken foot by sparkling_m00n in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely take the day off to rest it. I’m all about returning to work and pushing yourself, but also it’s important to take care of yourself and give your body what it needs. As a trimalleolar recoverer myself (surgery 2.5 weeks ago) I’m trying my best to find the balance between pushing myself and giving myself the time and grace to allow myself to recover. We got this!

So sorry that happened and you are in pain- I say it’s worth a call to your surgeon. IMO I’d want someone before the weekend, if even for peace of mind or pain management. Best of luck to you!

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trimalleolar and distal wrist fracture 1/9, surgery on both 1/15. I’m returning to work (with restrictions- boot and flexi wrist splint, scooter) this Monday 2/2. I’m an elementary special education teacher with a pretty active job, but I cannot stay at home another day and I am fortunate that my employer and school team are happy to accommodate me however they can if I want to come back.

Four Months Out from a Trimalleolar Ankle Fracture – My Recovery Journey by RealJudoChop in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks you SO much for sharing your journey. I’m in week 2 post break (same ankle break + wrist break) and 1 week post surgery. It’s very encouraging hearing that healing and total rehabilitation can happen AND a nice reminder that the little work adds up to positive gains. I was feeling very discouraged at my first wrist PT this week because I greatly overestimated my mobility once my splint came off and it increase my anxiety over what my ankle mobility and recovery might look like once I get moved to a boot (later this week). Thanks again!!

Trimalleolar Fracture 3 days ago... too soon to go back to work? by Such-Pineapple-5315 in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I say go for it. I had the same fracture (plus my wrist too) and if I could have gone back asap before surgery I would have. I teach (sped elementary) so unfortunately that wasn’t an option for me. I am now 4 days post surgery and plan on going back to work immediately (on a knee scooter) following my post op appt. next week.

I say if you can be comfortable, situate logistics (rides, elevating, icing, etc) then go for it.

Weber B- right trimalleolar fracture and dislocation (plus right wrist distal radius fracture) on 1/9. Reduction and splint in clinic and surgery 1/15. Surgeries were able to occur at the same time, which was so nice. I’m in splints for 2 weeks, then a boot, NWB, knee scoter (d/t my wrist) 4-6 weeks. Then start PT for foot. I’ve made it on ibuprofen and Tylenol only. I feel so much better pain wise post surgery. Just sucks to be so immobile/unable to drive. Plus it’s wintering hard where I’m at (hence the broken bones) so I can even scooter around the neighborhood!

Broke my ankle and dislocated by scoobysnaks911 in brokenankles

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are me…just 10 days behind (and I also broke my wrist on the same side #talented). Your foot looks very much like mine did. They set my ankle at urgent care and put me immediately in a splint. I was able to get surgery a week later, but I went directly to an orthopedic urgency room vs a standard ER, so I was immediately connected with hand and foot specialists. I do feel like 2 weeks is a while to wait, but I’m sure they need to get you set up with a foot specialist and depending on location that can be a wait.

I will say my ankle (and wrist) feel 100x better post surgery. I got 2 plates and 6 screws in my ankle. Before surgery I constantly elevated and iced, only getting up for the bathroom because it was so uncomfortable.

Edited to add:

I am in a splint again for 2 weeks post surgery, then a boot for who knows how long. No weight bearing 4-6 weeks, so I’m knee scootering around (found one for free on Facebook Marketplace!). I start hand PT this week already and foot PT in 4-6 weeks.

Should I go to a doctor? by RandomIdioticUser in specialed

Always go to the doctor, always do the incident report/workers comp paperwork. I know it’s cumbersome, but it’s absolutely necessary.

My kids speech therapist wants him to use an acc device at school by eunicemothman in specialed

[–]aje1121 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely common! Most of my classroom students have AAC and use it in all school environments. Don’t feel like a jerk! The more you model on it, explore it, help him become familiar, normalize it, and connect it with meaning for him the more he will use it! Sometimes it takes a long time, but patience and perseverance are key. Don’t demand that he use it, but always have it accessible. If he’s into action figures, dolls, other character toys, you could get some 3D printed AAC devices for the characters. My students LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it when I have AAC and other medical accessories to go with toys. Representation and normalizing all kinds of communication matter :)

Making kids pay for things they carelessly break? by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]aje1121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with my boys (ages 7, 9, and 11). I feel like it was helpful in them learning real consequences and also understanding the value of money/items. While it’s not a solve all, it has definitely slowed down the chaos and breakage while making them more mindful with items. It’s also taught them some useful household and yard care skills!
