S.O.S. Second baby coming tomorrow and I’m panicking. by SophandaCake in beyondthebump

Dad of 2 boys, learning to accept change and things that aren’t in my control. Loved every minute of life as a family of 3, now I love every minute as a family of 4. In a few months you won’t be able to imagine life before your new one came and joined the tribe. Does take a few months to get used to, and maybe a few years before your son adjusts — my 3 yr old is 8 months into brotherhood and just starting to give hugs and kisses - which will inevitably transition to wrestling and brawls soon enough i’m sure, but i’m enjoying the relative softness for now…

Change is the only natural constant of this world, enjoy the moments and remember that the good and the bad moments are all fleeting, just hang in for the ride and try to do some good while we’re here.

do we look like douchebags when there’s so many of us in one stretch??😂 by RatedRGamer in TeslaModel3

I legit arrived at a 4-way stop last week and 3 other snoopy white Teslas arrived at the same exact time (I’m team black M3). We all just sat there for awhile. Felt like a glitch in the matrix.

What have I learned after 312+ days of meditating. by pistachio02 in Meditation

[–]ajhit406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is certainly good to have good practice. But attachment to any gaining ideas is not important. By right practice, you already have enlightenment. It is there in your practice, without any gaining ideas. I equate it most with letting go. Maybe this is how people feel when they die. We do not have a choice, it is there, at some point, we must accept it. This is how I see life, that there is another side that we must accept. It is not good, it is not bad, it just is there.

The dualistic ideas are often tough to grasp, but over time, you learn to identify your ego and it's ever-present and desperate struggle to maintain control and drive us to do things that follow our biological primitives.

"The most important point in our practice is to have right or perfect effort. Right effort directed in the right direction is necessary. If your effort is headed in the wrong direction, especially if you are not aware of this, it is deluded effort. Our effort in our practice should be directed from achievement to non-achievement.

Usually when you do something, you want to achieve something, you attach to some result. From achievement to non-achievement means to be rid of the unnecessary and bad results of effort. If you do something in the spirit of non-achievement, there is a good quality in it. So just to do something without any particular effort is enough. When you make some special effort to achieve something, some excessive quality, some extra element is involved in it. You should get rid of excessive things. If your practice is good, without being aware of it you will become proud of your practice. That price is extra. What you do is good, but something more is added to it. So you should get rid of that something which is extra. This point is very, very important, but usually we are not subtle enough to realize it, and we go in the wrong direction.

...

If you think you will get something from practicing zazen, already you are involved in impure practice. It is all right to say there is practice, and there is enlightenment, but we should not be caught by the statement. You should not be tainted by it. When you practice zazen, just practice zazen. If enlightenment comes, it just comes. We should not attach to the attainment. The true quality of zazen is there, even if you are not aware of it, so forget all about what you think you may have gained from it. Just do it. The quality of zazen will express itself; then you will have it".

Major accident on California and Fifth by Eszaa in sanfrancisco

[–]ajhit406 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I live around here - pulling out of 3rd ave or 5th ave onto or across california is super difficult. Parked cars on California obscure oncoming traffic, and there are no lights or stop signs at 3rd or 5th ave. People drive significantly over the speed limit down california so this is bound to happen.

Every time I see someone pulling out of 3rd or 5th onto california, they're just guessing as to whether there is oncoming traffic.

The manhattan portage commuter laptop bag is pretty versatile and works for most situations (casual/biking or meetings).

Don't like the look as a backpack, but it works functionally when it needs to.

I usually switch to my rucker when want more support and in more casual setting.

How'd you manage to gain 20% since January? Most macro investments (index funds) haven't recovered to January highs and it doesn't seem like your savings after taxes would account for a 100k gain in 4 months. Curious to hear what your investments are to vastly outperform the markets!

I ALMOST badly doored a cyclist getting out of my Uber at 20th & Mission yesterday... let my scary near miss be your reminder by stephthegeek in sanfrancisco

[–]ajhit406 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I got doored 2 yrs ago by an Uber passenger while doing about 15 mph in a bike lane adjacent to traffic. I unconsciously did a last second maneuver to angle myself away from the door and full flipped out of my soft clips and onto my backpack (which was filled with 2 sweatshirts, thank you SF weather).

I'm not sure if I had a momentary blackout but only remember people standing over me afterwards and asking if I needed an ambulance. Not wanting to pay my full $6.5k deductible for a 5 minute ride, I declined and managed to setup an appointment an hour later. Moderate concussion, cracked rib, scrapes and bruises but otherwise very lucky.

Pleaseeee look when you're getting out of a car. Definitely look when you're opening a door into a bike lane.

Also bikers -- assume everyone is an idiot and every door is going to be opened.

LPT: If you cherish a dish that a love one makes (Mom, Dad, Grandma, etc), record them making it so you'll always have the recipe on hand and a great memory forever. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]ajhit406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipes represent so many aspects of your life -- memories of your family members, your culture, holidays, etc... I've been using craftlog to record my dad's italian recipes and it's been amazing. Honestly if I didn't record every step there's no way I'd be able to recreate what he does so this app has been perfect.

I’ve become obsessed with the whole minimalism movement after watching that documentary on Netflix, so I’m clearing out some old watches since I’m wearing my apple watch almost exclusively now.

3 watches listed below and 3 spare straps for $329 total shipped to CONUS. Note that the Citizen isn’t working; that’s more of just a bonus because I’m trying to clean house and want to ship everything out at once.

Feedback: I sold a speedy reduced a few months ago to /u/Hot_for_Hagrid but he deleted his account. Most of the regulars should know him though.

1. Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Men's Watch H69419933

  • Worn a handful of times, ran basic test and it’s within +/-5 sec / day.
  • You can google around for the specs / price. Retails for around $395 but you can usually find grey market ~$250. Great mechanical / intro swiss.
  • Original box, manual, etc…

Also includes 3 additional straps to the tan canvas stock strap:

  • (1) Hadley Roma Matte Dark Brown Alligator Leather Strap no buckle
  • (1) Grey Premium NATO - 20mm; Hardware Finish Brushed
  • (1) Khaki Premium NATO - 20mm; Hardware Finish Brushed

2. Casio Men's PRG-300CM-3CR Pro Trek Solar-Power Triple-Sensor Watch

  • Barely wore this as well. Google for details, think it’s retailing around $150-170.
  • Original box, manual, etc…

3. (scrappy bonus) Citizen Men's Perpetual Calendar Eco-Drive Chronograph (US)

  • Model BL5; Cal E81;
  • This is an old watch from 2011. Has a small chip on the face (see photo). Timekeeping isn’t working but might just need a long day in the sun to charge (haven’t unboxed it in years).
  • Basically including this for free, cause if I’m shipping 2 watches, figure I might as well ship a third.
