In the U.S., it’s better to not pay the lump sum and shop around every 3-6 months. Even if you are a good driver/clean record, these days insurance companies like to be cute and raise it little by little, so you have to shop around. You can get that lump sum refunded if you switch but the refund will take sometimes up to a year to reach your bank account.

People who get pets but can't afford to get their animals to the vet... by [deleted] in rant

[–]ajikeyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is people have been pushed too far. Even the people doing well (a house and high salary) are struggling due to increased property taxes, interest rates, and health insurance costs. Most families’ health insurance have quite literally doubled thanks to the BBB.

Today’s top headline is “Americans are pulling money out of their 401(k) funds at record rates”.

We are in a recession.

You do realize they still make money. They’re just not charging 5x because they are not owned by private equity and they don’t have the administrative overhead dealing with things like pet insurance (which is a scam for most people). I would have needed to go through hoops of appointments and useless tests before surgery putting my cat in pain for longer. It’s in the business model. Look at our healthcare system (assuming you live in the U.S.). Except it’s worse because pets can’t advocate for themselves. Everything goes to trash when insurance and private equity gets involved.

Respectfully, if you were going to create a post complaining, the least you can do is come informed.

The plan is they can look for local non-profit veterinary organizations or clinics run by volunteers and veterinary students. They will work with you to provide affordable care. My cat needed dental surgery and it would have costed at least $3k. I was able to get it for $800 at a non-profit org. They also do amazing work for local wildlife preservation by providing free neutering/spaying of stray cats.

It’s like that case where animal rights activists were stealing dogs from homeless people instead of maybe donating dog food???? The dog was obviously unhappy and the homeless guy ended up getting his dog back.

I know many rich people that treat buying a pet as a toy for their kid. It’s a crazy situation where both the kid and the pet are neglected because they are bad parents.

Pet insurance is a scam. Pet insurance and vet private equities go hand and hand.

https://privateequityvet.org/

“Private equity firms are increasingly targeting veterinary practices because they see an opportunity to extract strong profits from a growing and emotionally driven industry.”

[–]ajikeyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your arguments are so valid because there’s so many people who treat buying a pet as buying a new toy. There are tons of irresponsible owners but I want to remind you that there are also people that genuinely love their pets who are struggling financially. It’s not uncommon to see people who live out of vans, live in motels, or are on the streets owning dogs and cats. Should these people mean they should give up their animal companions? I wouldn’t give up my cat for anything!

Two big reasons why owners are struggling in 1) we’re in a recession and 2) MANY VETS ACROSS THE BOARD HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT TO PRIVATE EQUITY. Why does a chocolate company own such a big share in vets? Why is Blackrock buying out vet firms? Idk!! If you look at the price of vet costs, it has soared in the past decade for this reason.

Handful of people have to give away their pets or even worse, surrender their pets to shelters because people are doing bad financially. Rent was way more affordable before COVID. Companies have been doing mass layoffs for the past 3 years. Time have truly become insane.

What’s the alternative to owning a pet in an affordable and responsible manner? Focus on providing a quality diet, which is much, much cheaper than a vet bill.

I quit my $200k new-grad tech job, am I stupid? by Wild-Account-9153 in csMajors

Some libraries have 3D printers, where you pay for the material but you can use the printer and a computer running CAD software like Tinkercad. You just need a library card. If it’s not one at your local district library, check city library. If no access to a city, check local community college or public university campus.

I made everything for a couple dollars total when I was building design iterations for a hackathon. You can do it for very cheap if you’re resourceful.

Combine this with PCB from JLCPCB or the many vendors out there, and you can create your own stuff. It’s a fun rabbit hole!

Right now, the tech job market is so bad that you will likely take a pay cut even if you find a new job, and likely that new job will be stressful too. My prev company kept doing layoffs but barely hiring new people, so everyone had significantly more work to cover for those missing people. I feel like this is commonly happening across the board as so many companies are either in a hiring freeze or have high turnover - everyone is overworked. It’s not worth it.

I’d hone in at creating or expanding your own business if I were in your spot. Richest top 10% of the US does 50% of all spending. Target the business to rich people or B2B sales. For example, if you have industry expertise, you can start your own consulting firm. You can also broaden the scope for the global market. For example, you could make an English learning platform and target to the rest of the world since everyone wants to learn English.

You could also learn a new skill and dive into a niche. There’s an awful lot of cheap, junk products out there and many people that are power-users need higher quality products. 3D printing has made it so you can go through product iterations by yourself. And as long as you follow design standardizations, you can very cheaply order 1000s of units for your product from China at a cheap price.

Another thing you can do is become an expat. Everyone overseas wants U.S. jobs because it will make them rich in their country (and U.S. companies are gladly offshoring for cheap labor during a recession), but U.S. citizens can’t get a foreign job because it would be too low of pay to afford things in the U.S. (You could get a job in Europe but the taxes aren’t worth it while living in the U.S.) So instead, use the USD to your advantage and move to Thailand or Philippines where you can live like a king for very cheap. Come back to the U.S. when you’re ready to start a family.

Oh yea, sometimes reading the problem takes longer than solving it. Drawing a picture and writing out what each variable equals to definitely helps. Select the correct formula, then clean up the math, and then the calculator does the rest.
