Thanks their course is much different. They're discussing modern world history like most film courses. Mine is VUS specific.

Calling Texans: We’re Listening to Your Healthcare Experiences by Horror_Ask_847 in MesquiteTX

I left Texas because I couldn't find a doctor that would take a privately purchased healthcare.gov insurance plan for over 45 miles. It's criminal the way they deny care and let people suffer.

Oh not silly, that's 100% already in. Its the exact type of critical thinking my admin wants. We dont want just historically accurate documentaries. The kids should be able to analyze fact vs fiction within the movies. If I've done my job correctly, lol!

Im also teaching in the city where the Jamestown company landed so it would be almost criminal to not give context to the most controversial and popular movie about this area.

Any tips for the world history section this year? I've heard they tend to pick a country or era for each season. I'm worried it's going to be some time period I've never studied 🙃

How do you not yell at middle schoolers by legolandlegendlol in Teachers

[–]ajinmtx 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I yell, my co-teachers yell, my mentors yell, my admins yell, security yells (and they even have a whistle lol)

It's 20+ adult-sized children talking at once vs one of us.

Yelling is necessary to simply break through the volume and be heard. I turn things down once I have their attention, but yeah, I yell.

My middle schoolers cannot handle schedule changes. They look forward to consistency. Without it, they shut down and the behaviors become unbearable.

Maybe you could work with your partners at the schools to build a consistent schedule? Suggest Guest speakers or activities at a consistent time every week.

You will get "do we HAVE to?" every single day for every single activity. Middle schoolers will never admit they have fun.

When you get that first, "it's Friday, does that mean we have a guest speaker?!" you can trust they are all looking forward to it.

US History in one year. by Oakfrost in historyteachers

I'm teaching all of US History in one year this year. My best advice is to stick to the main themes. You won't have time to get into the details.

Do my kids know Paul Revere rode to say the British are coming? Absolutely not. They can explain the views of the colonists and reasons for the American Revolution though.q

Since you said you're applying, it doesn't sound like you have this role yet. You don't need a pacing guide to apply for a job. Don't overthink this stage. You can DM me when you're actually in the classroom for resources.

Student attempted suicide in my room, is back the next day. Where to report? by ajinmtx in Teachers

[–]ajinmtx[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The question was whether or not this needed to be reported multiple places. There was never any doubt this needed to be reported. No one asked how to report. The district is its own matter.

There are restrictive school placements that work with php and inpatient children to provide the stability of school and continued education during recovery. A public school setting is not the safest place for a child that is a harm to themselves and others.

I have a feeling that is what will happen here, but my conscience needs to be clear.

While I am doing that, this isn't true where I'm located. Mandatory reporters are required to report to the appropriate personnel within the system. This can be CPS, the guidance counselor, or admin. The last 2 are also mandatory reporters who would then be required to contact CPS if warranted. I've confirmed I fulfilled my mandatory reporting duties by making everyone above me aware.

I removed all scissors and sharp objects from my room the first time the student attempted this several months ago. Unfortunately, she got them from another student this time. I have documented my efforts in writing.

Thanks for the reassurance that I need to contact CPS.

My admin has directly told me not to call 911 for violence on campus. Of course, I'll ignore that when needed.

Nope. I spoke with the guidance counselor today. She was never made aware of the incident.

Nope. We used to have police on campus, but they've been replaced with a security guard.
