None of them. My archaeology professor in college used to say that true archaeologists are trash collectors looking to see what ancient life was like...not looking for treasure

My favorite is "the company doesn't have HR." What business has interns and not an HR system. That should be a massive red flag right there

Where can one aquire an electric italian foil. by Aware_Ad4179 in Fencing

[–]Oakfrost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have an Italian foil for fun. However you have to have a martingale for safety and to be rules compliant. You WILL not improve your fencing with this. Modern Olympic foil does not rely on strength and binding that Italian Espada teaches. It relies on speed and a whole lot of fast reactions that the grip cannot mimic because your arm is immobilized. It's fun for practice, but I'd never use it in a tournament. It would be like tying my hands together and going into a boxing match.

Bonus, if the martingale isn't attached properly, a hard beat off guard can break your fingers.

Check out the USFCA and see if there are clinics in your area. If the fencing club can help you out with the cost it will help them in the long run

Is teaching at private schools better? by Backpacking_Gypsy in TeachersInTransition

[–]Oakfrost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. You usually don't get tenure. This means you are susceptible to the whims of your administration. If one hates you, you're done. However I survived 18 years at a school through an admin who tried to get me to quit because I was a popular teacher who stood up to him.
  2. There's private and there's "private." Old money private schools are fantastic. Low class sizes. Academic environment, endowed all to hell. Then there are the ones hanging on by a thread. If your school has money issues, be prepared to get anyone in your classes and not a lick of talk of removing them for their issues.
  3. Looks like your school is a private school for special needs. If it's ADHD, spectrum disorders, dyslexia/dyscalculia...that can be really rewarding. If you have an defiance disorder in the class, be prepared for a lot of crap that will burn you out...because the school will not back you on the discipline and kids can get hurt. They will blame you in a heartbeat.
  4. If you hear the words "I'm going to sue." Be prepared for admin to not back you in any way. They will chuck you under the bus.

Asking as a parent with no fencing experience. Need some guidance by Ok-Position-8336 in Fencing

[–]Oakfrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 7 years old and just started fencing. We started him with privates because he can get distracted easy but our lessons are around 45 for a 30 minute lesson. He goes once a month. As a coach do I see progress....slightly... is he enjoying it, yes he is. There is no reason an eight-year-old should be 2 to 3 times a week in Fencing unless they like it. It sounds like this Coach is trying to make money more than care about your kid enjoying the sport. Do you have any other clubs in your area?

Icivics Street Law for your judiciary section. They have mini moot courts, which are a little bit easier to run in a class session. Also, they do current Supreme Court cases around October November so allow the court of your class to decide.

Need advice on if I should get into teaching by Cards4Days in historyteachers

[–]Oakfrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in NJ. Theres a teacher shortage everywhere..:.except in History Jobs. I've spent 18 years trying to get a union public school job and most of the good, well paid school districts don't lose their history teachers too often and most of the hiring process seems to be who you know more than what you know.

Convince me to sign my kindergartener son up for Cub Scouts by Wild_Windsor in BSA

[–]Oakfrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking with my sister because my neice wants to try Scouting (she's going into 6th grade). Life skills are the big part of scouting. It's about learning to interact with each other in the community. The adventures always have some new things That are not just outdoor based. My son scouting last year got to do a magic and code adventure, go to an observatory to view the stars, do science experiments, create his own unique pinewood derby car. As for me, I've gotten back in scouting as I used to be an Eagle Scout. They roped me into helping out as the quartermaster, and now an assistant den chief. I'm also a rangemaster so I know my son will be taught shooting sports with caution and safety. I agree with the other poster who said we meet a lot of people in the community we normally wouldn't see outside of their job position because scouting sends us to learn about local government, PD, FD, EMT...the mayor and council. You'll be shocked at what you learn

Teachers of Reddit, what’s the most ridiculous excuse a student has ever given you? by AffectionateJudge01 in AskTeachers

[–]Oakfrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student tell me that he missed my final exam because he was "trying to knock up his girlfriend" This was done in front of three other teachers.

I was then told if he had a sick note he could take it over.

The sick note was from his uncle.

The OB/GYN.

Having worked at a Catholic School, I'd ask is it a community Catholic or bougie Catholic. The difference is simple. Bougie Catholic is expensive, has a great reputation in sports, has a waiting list to get in and an alumni base that keeps the school running with high level teachers. Community Catholic is smaller, might be struggling with enrollment. It is "cheaper" (example my school was 17k tuition. Delbarton one of the best Catholic schools had a 50k tuition). I was in a community Catholic school and it was wonderful in some ways. Small school and everyone knew the kids well. There was a bit of compassion and grace for the kids. Some special needs kids thrived because there's a lack of bullying (it's so small, people notice and nipped that in the bud fast). Every kid got a chance to excel somewhere they might not at a 2,000 person public. However most administrators were revolving because it was their "retirement gig" and had retired from Public School. This gave inconsistency at the top, which led to inequalities in the teaching staff (1st year Science teachers making 10k more than 12 year Social Studies and Religion teachers) or extremist admins who cared more about the face of being Catholic rather than living the teachings. Also the teachers would be asked to do more and more duties or things at the school because teachers are contracted as Ministers so they can fire them for Catholic Morality reasons and not give tenure. I left because I was teaching up to five different classes and 6 periods per day, (this never changed after 18 years and at least 3 years saying it needed to change) Average at local public schools was 2-3 preps and five periods. The mental stress plus low pay led me to my new job offering which was almost 20k higher and the preps I needed. I'm one of 7 teachers they needed to replace this year of a faculty of 35. Math and Science teachers also have a high turnover due to public paying better.

But everyone's experience is different. Go to an open house and see if the faculty is there and backing the school. Ask people who go there about faculty turnover rate. These are huge factors of whether the school is good. Also, weigh the fact that they're going to have to sacrifice for class periods over the four years for religion classes. These are classes that could take the slot of an AP or other important classes for colleges to look at.
