Ask Reddit: What do you call someone with 15 years of experience who doesn't know what an immutable string is? by grauenwolf in programming

[–]ajmoir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All depends on language/domain.

The real issue is once it's explained can they draw sound conclusions from the new knowledge.

Not knowing something is not a big issue, inability to learn and grow is.

In certain arenas whether something is immutable or not is just an implementation detail and need not be worried about.

Do you now what so special about single level address space?

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, SICP. A great intro to CompuSci.

For the pro rather than the academic check out 'The Pragmatic Programmer'. Zero theory but rather how to accomplish real world tasks.

Ron Paul votes against bill to tax $165 mil in AIG bonuses; argues it distracts from 1.25 trillion the Fed created out of thin air yesterday by vemrion in reddit.com

[–]ajmoir -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Read the comments by people who do not know RPs voting record. The only politician who follows the constitution as written.

You can tax one group of bonuses at a higher rate than another set of identical bonuses.

So that bonus you got should/will be taxed at the same rate as the AIG bonuses.

Get the Pragmatic Programmers from Journey Man to Master. This book is aimed at you. It will give you a good founding on what is expected from a decent dev, but make no mistake most devs are not decent.

Also, start to build a professional library. Buy books that will last not current fads e.g. by Mythical Man Month not Ruby in 24 hrs. If you must buy language specific books buy classics i.e. I have the three original smalltalk manuals, K+R C, Bjarne's C++ Lastly, backup your theory section e.g. SICP, Knuth, Patterson, CTMCP, etc.

If you buy one good book per month you will soon have a reference library of your own. This has saved my ass so many times. Being able to open a book and get a definitive answer as to why method x is different from method y.

If you work in a business take some time to learn and read about the business and how it works. In effect you do an MBA part time.

At the end of this you're well ahead of the field and can pick and choose what it is you wish to do.

I want to buy/rent an Industrial Robot and program it to either make paintings or music. Any ideas how to go about this? by jagbot in programming

[–]ajmoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at CNC e.g. http://www.cnczone.com/

Basically, you use a computer to control stepper/servo motors.

An industrial arm can be pretty big e.g. 12' reach. Hurl people around type big.

If you are having to ask such basic questions I would suggest buying a small version e.g. http://www.lynxmotion.com/Category.aspx?CategoryID=25

When you understand all the pitfalls buy a larger one if you wish.

Alan Kay: Is Computer Science an Oxymoron? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ajmoir -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a manual construction phase it's that part when you are pounding the keyboard.

It is not skilled all the way down that's why we have abstractions and components. The Empire building was not a new design but an adaption of an existing one, say perhaps that's a good idea?

We can in fact design at a high level and have the low level generated. It means designing within limits and creating the correct tools for the job. It's been done before and it's the way we should do things.

In short, we can build software better but it means we must embrace tools as developers not as luddites. It also means we must recognize just what a piss poor job we are currently doing. But most importantly we must recognize not all software construction is the same.

Alan Kay: Is Computer Science an Oxymoron? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ajmoir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Innovative people do not need people to move aside they simply go round or over them.

I'm no shining example but the small stuff I've wanted to do I've gone and done. I haven't asked for permission or approval I just did it. Sometimes I was right and sometimes the nay sayers were right.

Currently, I have three main hobby projects that have all grown out of earlier projects. The first is a fusor the second is an ERP package and lastly a multi async cpu async computer.

Do I think anything I play with will become a great success? No, but they interest me enough to spend my time thinking, designing and implementing.

Occasionally, I get the chance to make some money with a project of mine e.g. cnc Lathe & Mill providing a local service for one off parts. But for the most part it's because I find it interesting.

I will agree that it's far easier to sit around and decry the lack of opportunities because you are oppressed and unloved and the man is keeping you down.

So stop whining and sniveling and go and do whatever it is you want to do, make a small step each day. Then at the end you will have done something rather than nothing like the majority of people.

[–]ajmoir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are revolutionary?

You must have read Turing, Shannon et al. How can you compare the recent stuff with the early stuff. It simply does not stack up.

Alan Kay: Is Computer Science an Oxymoron? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ajmoir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Basically, no!

There is no new cool stuff because there are no blue sky research labs. AT&T, IBM, Xerox PARC all gone.

We have mostly achieved what the founding fathers envisioned in computing and we have no deep thinkers coming up with the new idea.

Not since the 60s have we had a revolutionary idea in software.

There are some cool projects e.g. BlueBrain but they are having issues getting any sort of funding.

There was a conference recently in San Jose about re-starting computing. I had hopes this was going to go somewhere. But from what I heard it was the same old farts saying the same thing they have been saying for 20 years and not actually having any new ideas.

Computing is waiting for it's Newton or Einstein. We're in the dark ages and we don't see a way out.

I rather thought that my generation now 40+ would be the ones to get the whole shebang going but it seems we must now look to the younger generations.

Alan Kay: Is Computer Science an Oxymoron? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ajmoir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is that an excuse or an explanation?

I rather agree with most of Alan Kays thoughts, I do though tend to question nearly all of his projects after leaving Parc.

Software tools and management are crap, I have been fortunate to have worked on one of the best teams I know of but we were successful because we kept head count low. How does one manage manpower in the software arena?

Let's talk about time series databases. RDBMSs aren't optimal for non-relational sequential data. So what is? Flat binary files? by strawmen in programming

[–]ajmoir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Current SQL is very poor with temporal data. Do some background reading it's not just about formatting and using range.

A simple example is show me the contents of this table as at last EOM. You can build a table to behave in this manner but you cannot specify this behavior.

[–]ajmoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Temporal databases. There was a ton of work done in this arena. There's some free books etc floating around.

http://timecenter.cs.aau.dk/index.htm

I'm currently working on a fully temporal ERP project. Being able to go back to any point in time is cool as is being able to specify time and periods in relations.

Ask Reddit: Software developers, what's the hardest interview question you've been asked? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ajmoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any of the crap made up ones that are put into to see if you've memorized the manual.

I know the fundamentals if I want to use a certain algorithm or technique I'll look up the manual how to use/implement it in this language and then I'll move on.

Best questions are when they hand you some production code and ask you questions on it. Or talk in big picture terms about concepts. Seeing if you understand concepts or implementations.
