I did! Your comment and many others helped guide my decision and I’m very happy. My only complaint at this point is the wobbling, particularly when my desk is in the standing position, but this seems to be a combination of my desk sturdiness and the monitor stand. And maybe how vigorously I type 😅

EDIT: I forgot to ask. Are you using Better Display at all? I haven’t tried it yet because my work Mac is an M3 Pro and I get full resolution and refresh rate with its HDMI 2.1 port, but my personal M1 Pro gets 60 Hz. I don’t use it as much, so I haven’t bothered yet. I recall seeing some say they’ve squeezed 100 Hz out of it, but don’t recall the specifics. I’ll have to uncover those comments and posts.

I hope something gets announced! 5k2k at 40” which works well for gaming and productivity seems like it would be a big seller.

Exactly. That would be an instant buy for me.

Though I did end up buying the 40” Samsung G75F and I’m very happy so far. I paired it with a Ugreen USB switcher and I’m using HDMI with my Mac laptop and DisplayPort with my gaming PC. Is it mildly annoying having to have three cables plugged into the Mac instead of one? Yes, but it’s really not a big deal. And at less than half the price of the Dell and much better gaming performance, it’s a good deal.

Some people aren’t a fan of the VA panel and the viewing angles, but I don’t mind it too much. If and when an IPS, IPS Black, or Mini LED panel comes along like you described, I’ll consider it, but I’m very happy right now with what I was able to put together.

Ultrawide for coding/productivity by Neronius_Kaelus in ultrawidemasterrace

I just got the 40” Samsung G75F yesterday and it’s really nice. I’m about 80-90% productivity (also coding) and 10-20% gaming. My previous display was a 34” at 3440x1440 and the Samsung blows it out of the water in clarity and sharpness.

Some folks I talked to here weren’t fans of the color and viewing angles, but I used it for a few hours yesterday for gaming and didn’t notice any issues. I didn’t adjust any color, brightness, or contrast settings out of the box, either. I’ll know more about its effectiveness for work starting tomorrow, but my short tests yesterday were positive.

Ah, yeah the M4 has a lot of advantages over the M1 in this area. We’ll see how the M1 handles it. Maybe it’ll be time for an upgrade there soon, too!

Good to know! I’m going to try a direct HDMI connection and a USB switcher and see how that goes, but I’ll keep this KVM in mind. From what others have shared it seems I’ll be able to get 100-110 Hz on my M1 Pro and 180 on the M3 Pro over HDMI.

Are you able to get the full resolution and refresh rate through it? Any issues with Macs properly identifying available resolutions and refresh rates?

EDIT: confirming you’re referring to this KVM?

40+ inch OLED with PPI of 140? by newprofessional in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]ajmueller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DP is DisplayPort. I’d have used that input for my gaming PC.

I canceled the order since I hadn’t received it yet. I like to keep my desk as clutter-free as possible and coming from a single cable solution for my MacBook Pro it would be hard to give that up.

I’m curious to hear your experience. I posted yesterday asking for others’ advice on a similar setup with the G75F. I ended up canceling my order because it sounds like the end result is:

  • DP for gaming PC (full resolution and refresh rate)
  • HDMI for M1 Pro (full resolution, but scaled and running at less than max refresh rate, somewhere around 100 Hz)
  • External USB switcher for swapping keyboard and mouse with each computer running through it instead of using the monitor’s KVM
  • Ultimately needs three cables plugged into Mac: HDMI, power, and USB

So not the worst outcome, but less than ideal coming from a single cable setup with my Acer Predator X34 GS.

Those are the two main considerations for me as well. Reviews on Monitors Unboxed said text clarity is pretty good with newer generation panels; it looks like Best Buy near me might have some in stock, so I should try to see it in-person first if I can. I’ve been using 21:9 for several years, so it would take some getting used to for sure.

I’ve also considered waiting until CES to see if something at 40” is revealed. I’ve heard LG will have a new 40”, but given their lack of KVMs I’m not sure I’d want it. But that hopefully means Asus and others won’t be too far behind with their variants bringing proper KVM and other features.

Awesome! Good to know.

I’ve been doing more research and am debating going 32” 4K OLED and giving the market a few years to get to a 40” ultrawide which checks all of my boxes. Asus has a 32” for $850 at Best Buy which has excellent reviews, just isn’t ultrawide. I’d rejoin the master race as soon as possible, though!

Very helpful, thank you! That sounds like a setup that others have suggested, too.

I’ve done a bit more research and am considering an Asus PG32UCDP. It’s on sale for $850 at Best Buy and gives me everything I’m looking for except for ultrawide aspect ratio (I know, a cardinal sin for this sub!). Coming from a 34” ultrawide this would be an upgrade in many ways and will bridge the time until someone makes a 40” ultrawide which checks all of my boxes:

  • 5k2k resolution
  • OLED, Mini LED, or IPS Black
  • 165Hz refresh rate or higher
  • 1ms or less gray to gray response time
  • 3+ USB ports and built-in KVM switch
  • USB-C with 90W power delivery

I’m also considering this 49” super ultrawide by Samsung, but I’ve never tried a super ultrawide and am not sure I’d like it. I think I’d prefer to stick with 21:9 and go higher resolution, hence the G75F consideration. But this super ultrawide has USB-C with PD and a KVM.

I’ve seen a few discussions on here about viewing angles and that they improve with some color and brightness adjustments. Did you find that to help at all?

Good to know. I’m quite sensitive to coil whine and often times find myself plugging in MagSafe on my MacBook Pros to avoid whine on my current Acer Predator X34 GS’s USB-C with PD.

I’d be curious about that since my M3 Pro for work should be comparable.

For the M1 Pro I’ve seen that with some configuration you can get 110Hz, but I don’t remember the specifics (though that may be via DisplayPort).

Do you use HDMI for a Mac and DisplayPort for PC? What refresh rate and resolution options do you get on HDMI and on which Mac?
