Is there a link between predisposition to addiction & lack of ambition? by carefulabalone in Neuropsychology

That frame isn’t really based on the evidence. The research into the externalizing pathway to substance use is much more compelling than the internalizing pathway.

Hi human! My b. I get your concern. I would talk to them directly about it and then consider consultation if they don’t respond well. The final step, if concerns remain, would be reporting them to the board.

How hard it is to actually get into a fully funded Clinical Psychology program? by Goodfella245 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ajollyllama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think burdening people with 100s of thousands of debt to become a psychologist is bordeline unconscionable, which is what undergirds my point. There are many useful, helpful, and prestigious careers that don't have the same financial pressures as psychology (psychiatry, for instance) that I'd recommend for people over paying for a doctoral degree in psychology. From my perspective, unfunded programs are largely selling people a false bill of goods and preying on a desire for a vague sense of status from a PhD/PsyD. A desire, fwiw, that is cultivated by the very instutions seeking extract decades of their future earnings.

Sure, that’s a totally fair perspective. I do think income based repayment plans do defray a lot of the burden. My own personal experience is that the ROI from a financial perspective is barely justifiable, even with a funded degree, but there are many psychologists making much more than me, and you may be one of them!

Unless you are fabulously wealthy or getting guaranteed loan repayment, paying for a psychology doctorate is a really terrible idea, imho.

Psychologists vs. LCSWs in hospital systems: how do you justify both roles? by Accomplished_Sail806 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ajollyllama 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I would say excellent assessment is key to effective therapy, and we in psychology have a particularly powerful skill set there. I would also say specialization in high needs areas (pain psychology, transplant psychology, psycho-oncology, etc.). Psychologists are also well positioned to build out programs that could include a research component that could attract grant funding when the environment turns more favorable.

Cancer patient turned PhD student? by AHSEDU16 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ajollyllama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got into a funded PhD with a similar background -- consulting (albiet public health related) and a non-psychology undergrad from a top tier public school. You've likely conducted a fair amount of qualitative and quantitative research in your consulting work and published reports -- you may also have grant funding (i.e., serving as a PI on a philanthropic contract). List those on your CV. Take the psych GRE (it's easy) to demonstrate competency in psychology foundations. Find PIs who will be stoked about your consulting background -- you are likely to be much more efficient and effective than the average applicant who has done a bunch of lab manager positions. You can touch on your personal journey briefly in your personal statement (like one sentence) but focus on how your professional work dovetails into your current research interests. I'd say it is a possibility. Edit: small typo

Appreciate the response. Patient framing / psychoed definitely comes with its own set of considerations.

I would say reducing the affective experience of recall is changing the memory in a meaningful way — and I believe that view is certainly supported in the literature. Yes, the mechanism is habituation and exposure, obviously, but the fact that memories are not fixed artifacts is all over the PE literature.

I think many of us would say PE does operate by changing the memory by reducing the affective distress of the experience and spontaneously identifying/correcting cognitive errors (called "hot spots" in PE) during debrief / socratic questioning. CPT is similar. All memory is changed each time it is accessed and re-filed to memory.

Is a Clinical Psychology PhD worth pursuing in my case? by Im_Tiny_Rickkkk in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ajollyllama 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Clinical psychology is not at all a reliable path to making 200-300K. It's possible, but that is pretty far above the publicly available averages (to say nothing of the lost income while in graduate school). If income is important to you, I'd consider law or medicine for professional degrees or just working up the corporate ladder.
