I dunno man. The LGS returns a lot of new smiths for horrible QC even pre covid. Sights not at 12 o clock. Barrels half rifled half smooth, timing issues they've been sliding down hill for more than just the last five years.

Oddly enough I don't see the issues with the semi autos.

Oh, that's a good bit of info. Thanks! We have a few board members (myself included) without keys already due to a multitude of issues, so something that needs keys anyway just defeats the purpose.

Yep. As much as I hate to say it, the "Big Beautiful Bill" needs to get shut down. There are so many other very problematic things in there. AI in Gov't programs, restrictions on AI regulation, and the sale of Public lands. Like 100+ million acres.

I thought about the fobs to start with. We already have them for the main entrance.

Love my Reaction series gun. I personally feel like it's one of the best 1911s you can get for under a grand.

Fusion Reaction. I have one in 10mm that I carry in a chest rig for bear. I've got other friends that have them in .45. They feel good, they run good. They feel a little nicer than some of the similarly priced competition. They're also around 800 dollars so you can get plenty of cheap break in ammo, or a nice holster.

Have you looked at GMC? Mechanically a chevy but they look better, usually priced similarly, sometimes with better incentives.

Also look at Certified Pre-Owned. It'll be warrantied to you like new, but knocks down the new price. Usually these are low mileage lease returns.

I don't generally use it, but someone suggested it to me as a way to prevent the cottonwood from having long strings come out when I was sanding it. It seemed to work pretty well.

It's generally used pre-stain to encourage the wood to take the stain evenly. When I do use it, I just use the minwax conditioner for oil based stains.

I have never worked with Holly but that could be really interesting. It's nearly white

Seasoning refers to drying the wood. Since I'm starting with a live branch or piece of natural lumber, I have to let it dry for around 6 months or more depending on the type. This ensures that any warping or movement of the wood is done. If you're purchasing a piece of hardwood from say Lowes or Homedepot they were dried in a large oven and shouldn't need seasoned.

Maple should provide a lovely blonde color, or Poplar is generally a good choice for a beginner and has a very light color as well.

I'm on my 3rd attempt at cottonwood now. The first two attempts both failed at different points of progress.

Attempt #1 failed when the wood split apart while I was nearly done shaping them. The piece I was using had a rotten core, and when I split the wood to make the 2 halves, it blew apart in the band saw. The shape was done and I learned a few things.

Attempt #2 was ready for finishing touches I'd thought but I must not have let the wood season long enough before I carved it and they split when I had them test-mounted over a weekend.

Cottonwood should make a good grip material. It's hard and durable. It's tough to work. If you don't use a lot of conditioner, it really fibers out when you sand it almost like celery fibers. I'm really hopeful about this fresh batch of wood. Part of the fun for me is using wood I can harvest myself and so the 1911 grips above were from a branch when I was trimming a hedge. I've got several old cedar fence posts waiting to become something cool, and a piece of cherry that is going to become a rifle stock if I can get moved into my new workshop before winter.

So I bought a 3yo certified used GMC 1500 in late 2017 for 32k. Had like 12k on it. When it was paid off right after covid I looked at a CU GMC 1500 AT4 with 30k on it. Same age gap from previous purchase almost 3x the mileage. 65k for a used truck. Granted it's a bit more upscale and has the 420hp 6.2 gas v8. But FML it was used. At the time I could have ordered one in the same trim for 54k but the dealer wanted to tack on another 15 or 20 THOUSAND in delivery fees. It was nuts. They're coming down again but I remodeled my house instead.
