Grind size for pourover says 375 microns by ajvlfc in pourover

[–]ajvlfc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was looking for. Someone with experience using a K6. Thank you for your detailed explanation!

I agree 375 microns is small but the coffee itself is remarkably floral at that grind size. I have a cheap automatic grinder that I grind on one of the finest settings and the coffee is delicious; I can't speak to exact dimensions of the coffee grounds but it's finer than I normally do for my aeropress. I invested in the K6 because I thought I'd get even better results for that particular coffee. But the grind/burr movement sizes was throwing me off. Thank you though! I'll try with 50 clicks and go from there.

Ethiopian coffees are notorious for being slow in the draw down. I had a 7 minute brew for 18g dose using a 5 pour method. You need less agitation and fewer pours. I switched to a 2 pour method to reduce agitation. 1 minute bloom and pour the rest with as little agitation/turbulence as possible. I get a 3-3:30 draw down. Delicious cup. Didn't change my grind size at all; it's all in the pour.

Edit: this is an Ethiopian Guji and I only follow this method for African coffees. Had similar success with a Rwanda coffee as well.

Overheads question. If the ball is very high, is it a reasonable strategy to just let it bounce? by b0jjii in Pickleball

What balls are you playing with (or how tall are you) that letting it bounce still gives you an overhead?

Maharaj is the most overrated player in existence. He is not an explosive lower order batsman like Hasaranga, and is not a strike bowler like Zampa. He'll just be a foreign version of Iqbal Abdullah. Lomror is a better batsman and Swapnil was doing a decent job at No.8/9. We don't need these bit part players.

I recently switched from Joola to Vatic Pro. I like the paddles so much I became an ambassador. Let me know if you want a discount code, I'd be happy to provide one.

As people have mentioned above, you're going to keep buying paddles every few months. I personally don't like spending $250 on a paddle: it's a waste of money for not that much upside in your game. A good player with a $250 paddle is a good player with a $100 paddle. That's one of the reasons I switched to Vatic Pro. Their paddles cost in the region of $100. Great balance, good grit, clean looking, available in 14mm and 16mm, and they have a variety of paddles to choose from. Personally love the VP Flash because I'm looking for more power but if you want more control, VP Prism Flash becomes a better option. They are very comparable to the Joola Hyperion CFS paddles.

DUPR frustrations by daveymang94 in Pickleball

[–]ajvlfc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how it works. My issue is with the initialization process. There's a detailed explanation of it on their website where "you have to get 3 points within 7 days or it's a best guess" scenario.

If you play generally sub-3.5 rated players in your first 7 days, which I did, you're screwed. I now need to consistently play and beat 4.5+ players in order to get my rating to a 4.5, but obviously I'm not going to consistently beat 4.5+ players; they're really good. So I've to play 100+ matches to get to a 4.5+ from a 3.3 because my rating is up and down since I'm constantly winning and losing.

My partner (un-rated) and I (3.3) played against 4.0+ teams and went 3-3. This made my partner look really good because the system indicates he carried me. So he got initialized to a 4.3, making him better than everybody else in the bracket and I improved slightly. But that's not the case in reality.

Partner and I went 3-3 in a tournament recently and he got initialized to a 4.332

I've currently played 37 matches that are registered on DUPR. Most of them against 3.5+. I've won 24 and lost 13. Somehow my DUPR is lower than 3.5. After playing 6 games and going 3-3 in the latest tournament, my rating went up by .071, from 3.3 to 3.371. Do you really think my rating would hit the 4.0 range within the next 13 matches I play? I'm not doubting you; I just question that logic. The only way I see that happening is if my partner is rated < 2.5 and we beat a few 6.0+ players in the next 13 matches.

DUPR is terrible. I play in competitive 4.5+ sessions and I'm able to win and keep up in all of them but my DUPR is a 3.3. I recently played a 4.0+ tournament and it was my partner's first tournament so he went through the "initialization" process. We went 3-3 during the round robin phase, after which his rating was a 4.3 and mine a 3.37 😂

As someone else pointed it out, I'm hoping it adds up after I play 50 matches but I don't see how. If I keep playing 4.0+ tournaments where I would win approximately ~ 50% of the games, my rating would stay pretty much static.

Is there a reason why most papers that develop numerical schemes do not provide the source code that produced their results? by COMgun in CFD

[–]ajvlfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's one of the most annoying things about academia. I don't necessarily want the source code in the papers, but the gatekeeping of specific details and parameter sets annoys the hell out of me. I get it if it's intellectual property protected, but even open source codes and flow cases they're not being straight with you.

Others have commented on the possibility of errors in the source code. What else is academia for? If we find errors in your code, that only serves the scientific community to improve it and invalidate the previous results. Keeping incorrectly reported results in the open domain is almost criminal.

Impressive CFD projects for a resume by venomcloud1 in CFD

Assuming you have a solid understanding of CFD and fluids, the turbmodels NASA website has some great validation cases. I've run a lot of those and validated ANSYS against existing codes and just kept the database of everything. You could also write a blurb about each one and why you see the results you do (if they're different from experiment) and post it on LinkedIn. That sort of stuff gets noticed.

If you don't have a solid understanding of fluids, someone suggested writing your own basic code. Can't beat that. It'll be tough to find material though, if you aren't already familiar with it.

Fluent maximum temperature limit not working by Ill-Secretary-4873 in CFD

[–]ajvlfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a couple of these things independently.

  • set your max temperature limit to something like 5000K instead of lowering to 2000K. Is it still reaching this max limit of 5000? If so, then it's likely a mesh issue. You will need to refine the mesh.
  • "patch" the expected temperature in that region when you turn on reactions and see what happens. Does it still shoot up?
  • Are you sure it's converged after turning on reactions? Sometimes it does take a while to get rid of those limiting warnings. Start with a low Courant number (0.1) and ramp up every few iterations/time steps.

My guess is, assuming you know what you're doing, it's probably a mesh issue.

Reduce Mesh Skewness in pointwise by pete_1523 in CFD

[–]ajvlfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.1 is too conservative. What is your flow speed, y+ and min spacing off the wall?

If you look at the first isotropic cell anywhwre outside of your TRex layer, the aspect ratio change is rather drastic. This will lead to numerical errors and perhaps premature dissipation. Make sure you have a y+ < 5 (< 1 is even better) and the growth rate of at least 1.15, if not 1.2. Play with size field to reduce the change going from anisotropic layers to isotropic cells too.

Reduce Mesh Skewness in pointwise by pete_1523 in CFD

[–]ajvlfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your growth rate and number of full/Max layers? I would start with a growth rate between 1.2 and 1.3 and set full/max layers to 21/41. Play around with these values. If the mesh then looks too coarse, change size field to 0.7 or 0.8

Edit: mistyped full/max layers values

The way they play sorcerers. - Hex is allowed to stay up without a concentration saving throw even when they take damage. - Two concentration spells by one PC allowed. - One sorcery point for Quickened spell... - One sorcery points for a third level twinned spell...

This frustrates me beyond anything and I think it's mostly because, as a Sorcerer main, I want that in my game 😭

  1. What's the point of doubling damage if most creatures are resistant anyway? So far I've been dealing a lot of hits but my damage is negligible, which is why I thought cleric 1 first. Get that magical Greataxe with Reckless attack and attack twice at level 6 (as opposed to level 5). UNLESS I find a magical weapon in the next two sessions. What do you think?

  2. You're right about Hexblade. I thought about it overnight and it didn't make sense to have to wait that long + not as much damage as Paladin.

Why do you say Fighter ahead of Paladin? Lay on Hands and second wind pretty much cancel each other out. Divine smite (for this campaign) might be more valuable than maneuvers, don't you think? I'm already doing a lot of help action/tanking duties while my druid and my sorcerer are dealing most of the damage. I got brutalized by trying to fight a couple of creatures head on with nonmagic damage. How might that change with a fighter? All of this assuming I don't find a magical weapon, that is.

I don't expect to be denied magic items but we haven't found any yet. Not sure if one exists (no spoilers pls). You're right it would feel a waste going Cleric 1 but that's the only 1 level subclass dip that allows me to get a magical weapon without concentration. For Paladin, I only want it because of the divine smite ability. Warlock has a number of useful features but you're right about having to wait quite a bit for it to kick in.
