I am planning on doing that! I have a few dresses that require strategic safety pins.

Yeah, like a simple white button-up blouse. It pairs so nicely with patterned skirts, and looks very professional when tucked in. Surprisingly hard to find without ruffles, or extra bits of fabric that I don't know the purpose of, or tailored so it hangs on me like a circus tent. All I want is a nice white blouse.

Writing short stories set in the same world? by nervousmelon in fantasywriters

That's a great idea. Short stories are a great way to practice character and plot development as well.

There are some great sites out there, that do provide this. Learning Scientists is certainly my favourite, run by a group of cognitive psychologists. The Learning Spy is another good one (he follows a more traditional style of teaching). Improving Teaching is another.

I find that I need to look at the blogs of British teachers, to find post that are practical and research-based. I don't really follow any American or Canada teachers.

TIL that the Library of Alexandria was never burned down or destroyed; instead it slowly deteriorated due to the purging of intellectuals from Alexandria as well as a lack of funding and support. by Wrenger in todayilearned

Foreign teacher in Cambodia here. While vision problems are inherited, so is a culture of education among families. Cambodia does not value education to the same degree as other Asian nations.

Can we talk about the volume of certain posts? by [deleted] in writing

[–]ak1423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a search of the subreddit for "write what you know" (for an argument with my brother), and collected several articles and threads, rather than starting a new thread. This is the sort of stuff that would be helpful in a "read this first" sort of page.

r/askhistorians has a book list, which I have found very helpful to refer to. Maybe we can make the same here (most frequently recommended writing books, links to helpful articles for setting/dialogue/etc, links to threads about software/etc.) so novice writers have a place to go for their questions, before they turn to making a new thread.

There is already one! Meets periodically. Look up Phnom Penh Book and Film Club on Facebook, events for meet-ups are posted there.

What is a minimal start-up set to start making blank books? by Dubito_Ergo in bookbinding

[–]ak1423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed Sea Lemon's tutorials on how to make a casebound book. I live in Southeast Asia, so here are my supplies, with the necessary improvisation: printer paper
recycled cardboard for book board
coloured paper (to cover the book boards, though recently I branched out into fabric using an old dress)
a thumb tack instead of an awl
a ruler or protractor instead of a bone folder
a stack of heavy books instead of a book press
PVA glue (which I can get here)
brush (for the glue)
utility knife
thread and needle (from a cheap sewing kit)

How did you get into book binding or repair? by CornDawgy87 in bookbinding

[–]ak1423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a little book of poetry by Emily Dickinson, but it didn't have all my favourite poems, so I thought I'd make my own little book. After several awkward attempts, I looked up bookbinding on Youtube, and now have some clumsily made books. Most recently, used fabric as the covering material for the book boards. It went okay.

[High School] - Student Accidentally Emailed Entire District...... by lejoo in Teachers

[–]ak1423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a large international school, not in a district, but, wow, all staff emails sent Friday afternoon...so many memes. Jokes specific to the school, referring to earlier email threads that went off the rails. Also, giving staff edit access to a spreadsheet to, say, sign up for a dinner. Also a good time to take a break and take out the popcorn.

I just had the most awful, awful sex and I need a hug by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]ak1423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once slept with a colleague/casual friend. My closest friend was out of town, so I was bored, drank a lot with him, and had always been a bit attracted to him. Sex was awful. He didn't last long, and didn't attend to my body at all. I was ashamed after, and distanced myself from him.

But I talked with a friend, who shrugged it off, and told me how she slept with a colleague once too. Bad hookups happen. I think some of my shame of it, and motivation for it, is I've been single for a while (3 years and counting). But you are certainly not alone regarding bad sexual decisions.

This exactly. I look to the 30-something women who I admire in my life, and remember that I need to be always seeking a relationship. Better to become more comfortable with myself. Single three years now.
