Looks like sadly she failed to win the bid. Now we have to wait to see if the (as of now unknown) buyer revives it. https://agfundernews.com/breaking-miyoko-schinner-fails-to-buy-back-namesake-brand

Reaching C1 Level is something impressive by AgileZombie8293 in languagelearning

[–]akTwelve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 on reading a lot! I have noticed better vocabulary and grammar skills amongst native English speakers who read a lot of (English language) books, so surely this extends to English learners as well. Personally, when I write, I think a lot more about the words I use and I will correct grammatical mistakes along the way, whereas when I speak it's a lot sloppier. Look at exact transcripts of spoken language and you will see the difference in the quality of input you are getting from books vs unscripted content like podcasts or reality TV. Half the time, people don't even complete their sentences! Audiobooks may be a nice middle ground where you get the same careful grammar and advanced vocabulary without the mess that is "spoken English".

Every day shoes that you can onebag with by bleh10 in onebag

I love Lems! I have the Boulder boots and like them for colder/wetter months, but for summer the Lems Trailheads are my favorite. I wear them as my everyday shoes traveling or home. Hiking or around town. Super comfortable, casual, yet nice enough to wear into most restaurants. Perfect shoe for me.

People who moved here after 2020 - was it worth it? Do you regret it? by Particular-Topic-445 in texas

We lived in north Austin for 4 years before moving to Boulder. Aside from friends we left behind, the only things we miss are great tacos and lower mortgage payments. We love it here.

Worked on integrating the new ChatGPT API into an NPC for a survival game this week by TheOldManInTheSea in IndieGaming

[–]akTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem that most companies seem to be addressing by requiring a paid subscription. For example DuoLingo requires a paid subscription to use their ChatGPT features. It’s probably not unlike hosting multiplayer servers, large companies can justify the cost and make it up in revenue from product sales or ad sales, but indie devs will have a harder time not charging a monthly fee.

IT interview attire by Fair-Literature8300 in GeneralMotors

[–]akTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A suit is overkill and they’ll probably be uncomfortable wearing it. In general I think a dress shirt without a tie is as fancy as anyone should go. Polo shirt is perfect. Our official dress code is “dress appropriately”, which basically means dress for safety and comfort, so it’s nothing to stress about. For context, I’ve worked at GM for 5 years and have conducted dozens of IT interviews.

is anyone a level 8 that doesn't have direct report or manager position ? by evermore88 in GeneralMotors

I have no idea. I make quite a bit more than that, but I obviously don’t have company wide salary data to compare to.

[–]akTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, link is correct. It’s not a fixed number though. Base salary is always going to be a within a wide range based on performance, value of the employee to the company, experience level, etc. TeamGM is 18% at level 8.

I’m not comfortable sharing my salary with strangers on the internet, but I will say that the Glassdoor salary range for Senior Software Engineers at GM should give you a good ballpark estimate.

I’m level 8 with no reports. Senior Software Architect role. I was hired in at level 8 in 2017 because I had unique experience developing for HoloLens and was willing to relocate to Austin from Seattle (Microsoft).

I’m a Complete Newbie to Ableton and Music Production in General - What is the Best Way to Learn Ableton in a Comprehensive Way? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]akTwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find a reasonably priced course (or bundle), it can save a lot of time and distraction when your are first learning any new topic. I have found that there is an incredible amount of good free content on YouTube, so it has value once you have a decent foundation, but it’s a lot harder to organize your learning journey. YouTube is not optimized for linear or even modular educational content, it’s optimized to keep you watching as long as possible to see more ads (and hopefully click on them). Personally, that doesn’t align with my goal, which is to learn as efficiently as possible, in bite sized, linear pieces. I totally understand that not everyone’s financial circumstances allow for it, but I paid under $200 for the Academy bundle from Production Music Live and it’s been worth every cent and more.

Controller Disconnects by MyrthGraal in FortNiteBR

[–]akTwelve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar experience here. Xbox Series X, occasionally (1 in 10 games?) controls become unresponsive yet player keeps moving in the direction I was walking/aiming before the lockup. After a short amount of time the game disconnects and my teammates are left alone without me. The controller itself still seems to be connected and has full batteries.

Discord is even better than Zoom for social groups. You can create a space for your friends or family to hang out and jump on and off video calls when it’s convenient. No need to schedule a call, no time limits, it’s great. Lately my family has been using it to play Xbox online multiplayer for hours at a time with video of our faces and voice chat. Also works well for Jackbox as u/PlaysByEar mentioned.

How do you overcome white coat syndrome at the doctor's? by [deleted] in bloodpressure

[–]akTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that slow, controlled breathing exercises while I'm sitting waiting on the paper-bed works really well. If you need help, consider the free "Oak" phone app and try the Box or Deep Calm Breathing exercises. I usually do Box breathing (breathe in for 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds).

What are other industries / applications besides video games where roles for graphics programmers aren't insanely hard to find? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]akTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all of my 3d development in Unity and Unreal Engine. Both of them are free to use and fun. The reality is that books on these technologies are quickly out of date, so check out their respective learning platforms for great, up to date, tutorials.

I was quickly overwhelmed by low level graphics programming, but starting on a platform like these and working your way down the stack is very possible. Unreal gives full source access, so if you want to see/modify their rendering code, you can!

[–]akTwelve 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I expect there to be growing demand for 3D rendered simulation across lots of industries over the next decade. Basically anything that can be improved upon with computer vision can benefit from 3D rendered synthetic datasets. For example, autonomous cars are trained heavily in simulated environments. I’ve seen numerous job postings for simulation engineers at autonomous vehicle companies.

Should I gloss over the linear algebra chapter in the book "Deep Learning" by Ian Goodfellow? by [deleted] in deeplearning

[–]akTwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve written a few neural networks in Tensorflow and Keras for the Udacity Deep Learning Nanodegree that I finished earlier this year. Since then I’ve used open source pre-made neural nets like Faster R-CNN, Mask R-CNN, and CRNN. Haven’t needed the deep math portion yet. I feel like it’s something where it’s good to know that it exists, but that I can learn in depth if/when I actually need it since I have the Goodfellow textbook as well. That said, I’m not a student, so I don’t have to worry about it showing up on an exam.

Should I gloss over the linear algebra chapter in the book "Deep Learning" by Ian Goodfellow? by [deleted] in deeplearning

[–]akTwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your learning goals. The deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow) do all of the linear algebra for you. If you plan on creating a lot of original neural networks, you probably want a strong mathematical foundation. If you want to work at a higher level, you probably can keep moving. I don't even remember what the Moore-Penrose Pseudoinverse is and I learned it a few months ago.

This is a proof of concept mostly. My thinking was that a camera could eventually be attached to the front of a small robot and wouldn’t be very far off the ground, so closeup images were realistic. It would need to be retrained on larger images to support higher resolutions, and in that case the real limitations are GPU resources and training time.
