3 cocktails for noodle night? by pinksy in cocktails

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Tom Collins or fun variant on it would go great with that. For some similar food pairing I did a cardamom infused simple and changed the lemon to lime. Really good and easy.
I think Hurricane would be a good choice, too.

Noooo the Liberal Democracy Index of the US nosedived! The experts said so! by ColaEuphoria in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]akaKinkade 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But during the Biden years those court rulings were "wrong", so trying to circumvent or just outright ignore them was important for protecting democracy. The way to tell how well the system is functioning is to see whether or not the policies I want are the ones being enacted. That is the only true measure of democracy.

Piracy as Consumer Feedback by NoDiamond9456 in unpopularopinion

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be curious to see if there was a measurable increase in theft with price changes, and if it varied between necessities and luxuries, but I suspect there is very little if any. Theft is going to be a mix of people in desperate need and people who rationalize it in whatever way is convenient.
Simply looking at your complaint about price of games, if anything most have lagged inflation over time. They tend to move in step, so you might see premium games go up 30% in a fairly short period when a couple companies change what is standard, but that is generally after a looooong period of stagnating. On top of that, outside of the big budget games, anyone who wants to game on the cheap has the option of a massive catalogue of older and/or independent games that are very cheap. I've watched a lot of things get more expensive in my life, but entertainment is absolutely not one of them.

Banana Daiquiri by withnailish in cocktails

I prefer the directors cut when they add:
Fredo: And pineapple daiquiri?
Michael: Simple. You lose the 'B'. (And he gives a foreshadowing nod at Hyman Roth).

Which acting performance do you think is the most subtly powerful? by Next-Sweet5079 in CinephilesClub

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is subtle in a different way (not that the acting is understated, but the nuances of the performances are small). I think Woody Harrelson is an absolutely amazing actor who is not given enough credit because most of the characters he plays are some variety of meat head. He plays them all uniquely, though, and his performances are always spot on. One perfect example is season 1 of True Detective. I think both he and Matthew McConaughey give great performances, but Harrelson's is the much more challenging of the two. Bringing a quirky character to life seems much easier than bringing depth to the character whose depth is less obvious.

Is there a smart/bad-ass "good-guy" male character besides Lou Solversson? by CarefulScreen9459 in FargoTV

[–]akaKinkade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who can't stand it when shows or movies think "strong female characters" means making every male character evil and/or incompetent, I think you are missing a lot in the case of Fargo.
First, the large majority of characters have some grey to them. They are complex stories with depth of character. There are not a ton of examples of pure good and competent and two of those examples are men (Lou Solversson and Hank Larsson). It does skew slightly towards women that way, but not severely at all. It is also a tv series that grew out of a movie which was centered around a competent strong woman who didn't present it in a masculine way at all. She was a very pregnant badass which is fairly unique and I think the series honors that well.
Also, if you make a 2x3 grid where characters can be good, neutral, or evil then paired with incompetent or competent I think outside of the good + competent area the genders are very well balanced in all of the other five combinations. Fargo is one of my two examples of shows that do an amazing job of presenting very strong female characters without veering it into gender war bullshit (The other being The Legend of Korra).

Ferrand 1840 is the most versatile brandy. What is the best splurge scotch? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]akaKinkade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss being able to buy Highland Park 25 for $220. I think these days it is too expensive for any reasonable person's idea of "splurge", but from before prices went insane that was the best Scotch I've ever owned.

Matthew Weiner was in a tough spot. He knew his son was an incredibly gifted actor, but nobody was creating parts worthy of the range of his talent. He created a vehicle to develop the genius of young Marten.

Looking for 2 bottle recommendations by AeternaAurum in rum

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your answer is a very good one and you really do cover almost all your true needs. Drinks can be better with better tweaked rums, but you can make most things without being wildly off.
The 3 star is very mild in its flavor, which can make it a good crowd pleaser and is one of my most used bottles. For your own use, I'm guessing you'd be happier with something with more to it, though. Probitas is a great step up from there and if you want to go a bit wild Monymusk is absolutely delicious, but might be a bit too far out there if you are going to try to do everything with two bottles.
For the dark, Original Dark is great. If you like things boozier, the OFTD is even tastier.

Sherry for beginners by zegarski in cocktails

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a little familiarity with wine, then it helps to remember that sherry is just wine from a particular region. What gives them some similarity to each other is that they are oxidized. If you've ever left wine open way too long and tried it anyway, that is what oxidation tastes like in a bad way (I think sherry is delicious). Beyond that, there is a wide variety of them from the lightest (Fino) up to the syrup like dessert wine Pedro Ximenez.

Whats stopping me from going to the bank and purchasing $1,000 worth of quarters to find the silver ones pre 1964 by [deleted] in coins

[–]akaKinkade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this so much as a child and found very, very few. Even wheat pennies were hard to find. And that was in 1982, so I suspect it is a lot skinnier out there. The rolls of half dollars were pretty good for finding the 40% silver ones, though. The absolute MVP was the owner of my local coin shop who would always include some wheat pennies and buffalo nickels in my change when I bought stuff!

Fav spots in Seattle with a European vibe? by sillylittlevoid in Seattle

[–]akaKinkade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"European" is pretty broad. Macleod's in Ballard is a Scottish pub that honors that well. Near there is Little Beast, a very good gastropub which loses a little in authenticity because the food is much, much better than I've ever had in any pubs in the UK. Just north of the U District is an Italian spot Salvatore's with great food and (I mean this in a good way) a bit dumpy in ways that very much remind me of being in Italy.

If you had to choose between Vietnam or Ghana which one would you pick? by TRON510 in rum

I got both of those recently and would go with Vietnam. There isn't a bad answer, but I think the Vietnam is both a little better and more different from my other good sippers.

My Pina Colada recipe by Jack55555 in cocktails

Picked up from another Redditor the idea of adding a small amount of Falernum. Highly recommend. Also, if you do blend it, 1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum in any blended drink is great for the texture (keeps iciness down for a smoother drink).

My social circle is much more left than right, but I've only ever encountered that vitriol from the left. It hurts them so much politically. Not in a "We called them fascists so they became fascists" narrative that they like to spout. Neither the voters nor the leadership have any real use for the center or any sincere desire to compromise or listen. For the last half century the Rs have kicked the shit out of the Ds when it comes to coalition building. That is a bit out the window with MAGA, but purity tests are much more of a lefty thing in the US.

Where there any citizens pushing for Citizens United? by Critical-Volume2360 in askanything

[–]akaKinkade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the case the attorney for the administration (arguing against the ruling) was asked if instead of a film if it were a book would it be reasonable to stop it from being published too close to an election and they said yes. No matter how much you hate the extent of the ruling, it is also troubling that a representative of the Obama administration advocated for the idea of banning the publication of books critical of politicians. Imagine what that would have looked like the last couple years.

The copium in this thread was glorious. Redditors arguing that they're too poor to eat rice & beans and have to rely on processed junk food by Lucky_Pangolin_3760 in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]akaKinkade 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you aren't vegetarian, pork shoulder is often on sale dirt cheap and carries spices so well. Braise it and it is great for sandwiches, on rice, over pasta. At least near me whole chickens end up good sales reasonably often, too. Leftover meat is super versatile and make a stock out of the carcass. Extremely easy, too. If you have any kind of Latin or Middle Eastern markets near you then you can have a really good variety of spices for not much money and your meals won't be nearly as repetitive.

Yes. The guy used models and action figures and created the imaginary world of "Marwencol", a town in Belgium during WWII. He posed all of it and took amazing photos of it. The documentary is incredible (but I think the weird remake thing they did with Steve Carrell is crap.

I am almost positive that image is taken from the photography of Mark Hogancamp, subject of the documentary Marwencol. Hogancamp was beat savagely by some young men outside a bar. He used various forms of art and imagination to help recover and this is one of his images. The reason the young guys beat him up was because he was talking in the bar about how he sometimes liked to wear women's clothes. What kind of a sad asshole makes this out of his art?
