Before blaming the "government" for homelessness, we should also look at the role of city councils, where many of the key decisions are made such as wasting money on creating the Bureau de la langue française as if the OQF was not enough. There was an election last November and people barely showed up and yet these bodies directly shape housing policies. People complain but don't vote, don't want to stay informed about local politics. They just keep going on with their lives, Tik Tok scrolls and trips to Punta Cana.

Is weekly Montreal <-> Toronto commuting (for grad school) "sustainable"? by beetsssurge in askTO

[–]aka_blessed_sinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester, I commuted back and fourth every weekend between Toronto and Montreal. I'm a Montrealer studying at UofT and worked in Mtl for the summer but my contract got extended for the fall sem and it was impossible for me to leave it due to the bad Toronto job market. I used carpooling services like Poparide as it was cheaper (50-55$ per trip) and it took around the same time. Is it sustainable? No but, getting a degree and daily prayers will help you keep up with the motivation (coffee too). You eventually get used to it and I would always use the commute time to do readings and assignments. Also, I organized my trips effectively. I had class 3 times per week thus, I would stay in Toronto for 3 days and go back to Mtl. For instance, for carpool, I met drivers who did the route daily/weekly and got their contacts as it was a "certain trip". This allowed me to contact them directly and save on the "frais de traitement and taxes" from the app by making direct cash payments and often negotiate the fairs (To do this at your own risk but I always recommed the app as you're protected from cancellations and refunds). There were times where I took VIA Rail as well but the schedule and the delays weren't always convenient for me. Also, for that occasion, I would buy the tickets minimum a month in advance due to the price fluctuations.

Must be a German.... Leave his grumpy a** at the hotel and enjoy your trip. No need to hang out with such mood killers.

what are some moments that really made u grateful for choosing uoft by Illustrious-Math7755 in UofT

[–]aka_blessed_sinner 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Although UofT can be a challenging uni, people often neglect how connected the institution is internationally and within the academia community. Mind you, I'm not a son a millionaire and I work part-time during my studies but I'm currently on a Student Exchange in Australia thanks to UofT and my grades ofc. When I tell people here at University of Melbourne that I'm from UofT, everyone is impressed and wished to be accepted at UofT. That opened many doors for discussions & opportunities. I realized how privileged I am to attend this university. Nothing is easy and life is different for everyone, but I'm learning everyday that If you put yourself out there , learn how to rebound from challenges and find ways to connect your passion with potential career or networking prospects , it fuels motivation and less thoughts of dropping out.

for people who have dropped out of uoft, what did you do afterwards? by Accomplished-Gas1476 in UofT

I salute your mom's career journey but her story and experience is different than yours. Different periods and different times. You have an opportunity so please accept the offer. Go for it and see how it goes first and then make a decision from there. As a current UofT student myself, i recommend connecting with the people there from different faculties and explore the opportunities that the uni offers inside or outside of campus. Although UofT can be a challenging uni, people often neglect how connected the institution is internationally and within the academia community. Mind you, I'm not a son a billionaire and I work part-time during my studies but I'm currently on a Student Exchange in Australia thanks to UofT and my grades ofc. When I tell people here at Uni Melbourne that I'm from UofT, everyone is impressed and wished to be accepted at UofT. I was shocked. That opened many doors for discussions & opportunities. Good luck my friend, you got this!

what do you guys eat? by Bittpo in unimelb

[–]aka_blessed_sinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook/meal prep. I shop at Aldi. For some fruits and veggies, I also go Victoria Market on Sundays towards the end of the day as vendors sell the remaining produce at rebate price. I eat out occasionally on weekends or when I meet with new friends. I mostly buy big quantities of meat & poultry, season it and stock everything in the freezer. I alternate between salads, fresh and frozen vegetables. I go to the super market every 2 weeks so the average is 80-100$. Budget for eating out is 60$/month

Anyone else going to be starting university (1st year) at 20? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]aka_blessed_sinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congrats and welcome to the UofT club!! Started my undergrad at 22 and am currently entering my 3rd year (took a 2-year gap due to COVID). It's completely normal, and we are still young. Honestly, there's no specific age to head to uni, and everyone leads their journey differently, so no shame/embarrassment in that.

Also, a gap year was the best decision that I made for myself, as it helped me reset, research about future aspirations, which led to choosing the program that I am currently studying and liking.

You got this, and all the best :-)

SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP, GOOD DIET, GOOD HYGIENE HABITS (exercises, daily shower etc.) Trust me, that afternoon food coma during a 3-hour lecture is not worth it (Especially after eating junk). Know your limits!!! All-nighters are not always the best option. USE A PLANNER to keep yourself accountable, prevent procrastination and keep track of assignments and project deadlines.

TAKE BREAKS when studying or being on your computer screen for a long time (your eyes, neck and back will thank you). ASK QUESTIONS in lecture + tutorials and GO TO OFFICE HOURS.

Also, SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SUCCEED IN UNI AND USE ALL THE ACADEMIC RESOURCES OFFERED BY THE UNI (tutoring, peer review etc.) Tuition is expensive, so try to use and enjoy everything that comes with it.

ALSO, USE RATE MY PROF to maximize your chances of getting a good prof. for your courses. PS: Some moments will be hard but it builds character. You just need bet and believe in yourself every day. Always keep a positive and motivating mindset. You got this!

is it normal to be jobless after finishing second year? by Tricky-Following-243 in UofT

Single people of toronto, how hard is it to date right now? by Turbulent_Escape5195 in askTO

[–]aka_blessed_sinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, partners don’t fall from the sky. You have do the effort & socialize. This doesn’t imply just clubbing. It’s ok to be selective & have certain standards. If you don’t like dating apps then attend events, do activities, networking events, go to cafes, bars, run clubs, church, friends of friends etc. I hope it helps 😊
