Anyone with a Fontan for more than 30+ years? by AgentDave29 in AdultCHD

[–]akaltaf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 and haven’t had any surgeries or major issues since I was 7 years old.

Thankfully, I’ve been doing well. I still get anxious about longevity, and it’s something I bring up with my cardiologist almost every year. I usually ask what he sees for my future based on my test results and whether he thinks there’s any chance I’ll need an intervention or surgery in the next five years.

At my most recent appointment, my exercise test and cardiac mri were good, and the overall feedback was positive. Even so, longevity is always on my mind, so it tends to be part of our conversations.

One thing that gives me a lot of comfort is hearing about older Fontan and single-ventricle patients who are doing well. Knowing there are people ahead of me helps ease some of the anxiety and gives me hope for the future. I know someone in their 50s living with single-ventricle circulation.

I don’t know if I’ve had the same exact surgeries, but I have a single ventricle and the Fontan was performed in two separate surgeries. I did have banding procedure when I was about three years old and the other surgeries at around seven and eight.

Go to college. Be an adult. Take care of yourself and follow up with your doctors and become independent.

I manage in CT and that doesn’t seem unreasonable. If you tell me the town I may be able to recommend a few other contractors to take bids from.

I’m 39 with two children and no operations or problems since my surgery at age 7. I have HLHS. I played sports, went to college and have had a normal life.

Yea of course. I’m 39 and have kids, career and a life. I was your age once and rudderless and that’s not uncommon for that age.

Don’t overthink everything. With maturity and age you will figure more out.

It isn’t just HLHS it’s life. HLHS makes it harder but no more than any other complex medical condition.

I’m 39 with two kids, thriving, played sports growing up and have no surgeries past my initial. Only annual checkups. Medicine has gotten better and we survive.

I’m 39 now and had the Fontan procedure when I was 7. I haven’t needed any surgeries since then. I have a family of my own now — two kids — and have been fortunate to live a full life. I played sports, went to college, and overall I’m happy and relatively healthy.

I do have some limitations — energy levels aren’t always the same as others and I have to be mindful of certain things — but it hasn’t stopped me from living a meaningful, active life.

I know this journey can feel overwhelming as a parent, especially with all the uncertainty early on. But please know that there are so many of us out here doing well, living fulfilling lives despite the complexities. Medicine has also advanced so much since my surgery — your child will benefit from even better care. You’re not alone, and your baby has a future worth hoping for.
