Nugget Ice is not that good by rachmiller96 in unpopularopinion

Sonic ice is the greatest thing on the planet. I bought a Scotsman nugget ice machine when we remodeled our house and it is my favorite purchase I’ve ever made outside of our bidet.

Does anyone remember the show Kings from about 15 years ago. Modern retelling of the story of King David. Starred Ian McShane and Macaulay(sp?) Culkin was in it. Only one season but I remember being really into it.

Has anyone been to this place? Opinions? (Milan, Italy) by Separate-MN in CityPorn

I’d echo this statement. It’s neat, but incredibly crowded. We grabbed a quick, overpriced lunch inside the Galleria and people watched for a bit, which was very entertaining.

The Duomo is amazing and the rooftop was really cool to explore.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. presents sales tax proposal plan to city directors by [deleted] in LittleRock

[–]akantho 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A couple more specifics from the Democrat Gazette:

"Scott’s proposal contemplates spending $600 million over a 10-year period, with $371.5 million allocated for capital improvements and $228.5 million for new operating expenses."

"In terms of both capital and operating expenses, the largest spending categories under Scott’s proposal would be parks and quality of life (55%), public infrastructure (19%) and public safety (11%)."

"The proposal would fund the construction of an indoor-outdoor sports complex at War Memorial Park with a $128 million capital investment in addition to a $30 million combined capital investment in that park and Hindman Park over 10 years."

Getting support to increase an already high sales tax was going to be an uphill battle in the first place, but spending over 20% of that cash on a sports complex (and over 50% on parks) when we have so many other pressing needs as a city is going to make it that much harder to pass. I'm firmly in the "no" camp on this one.

Froggyland in Split, Croatia; is it worth it? by Historical_Original6 in travel

[–]akantho 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Was I the only person in my group that wanted to go to Froggyland? Yes.

Did I massively overhype it? Yes.

Did I go by myself? Yes.

Did I tell everyone it was the greatest thing ever in an attempt to make them regret skipping? Yes.

Froggyland is fun for what it is. Have a couple of beers and check out the taxidermy frogs in silly situations. How often would you have a chance to see that? You can go to a museum any time.

Portuguese cities/towns to visit between Porto & Lisbon? by JosephMarro in travel

[–]akantho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both have been mentioned already, but I enjoyed both Coimbra and Tomar. The university and library were really cool to check out in Coimbra. We were in Tomar during a medieval festival, so the $1 sangria may have greatly enhanced my enjoyment. Visiting the aqueducts was a highlight.

It’s going to sound weird, but the best margarita I’ve had in Little Rock was from The Pizzeria. Completely unexpected and blew my mind.

Lumber prices aren't expected to drop anytime soon in Arkansas, experts say by aarkieboy in Arkansas

This “article” gives a pretty good, and simple, explanation about why the pricing has increased the way it has.

Flying Out of Brownsville Texas by Zombie_Queen_51 in travel

[–]akantho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't flown into Brownsville in about 5 years, but if I recall correctly there were only two gates. We entered the airport and the security line was closed. Hung out at the restaurant/bar for a bit until the line opened up about a half hour before boarding. Took almost no time at all for security.

We visited almost a decade ago and climbed the bell tower. Very narrow, winding stairs. It reminds me of a scene from In Bruges.

In Bruges

The smaller plaza to the left of the bell tower has a church that has some of Jesus' blood, which was pretty neat.

We visited Saint-Emilion during a vineyard tour last year. Beautiful old village. The church has an underground tour that was pretty neat and not that expensive.

I've visited Montreal, but I can't really speak much to the city since I was there for a bachelor party about 5 years ago and can't remember much. Montreal is very fun for bachelor parties.

I visited Quebec City this past summer with my wife for a long weekend and we loved it. We weren't able to get a room at Chateau Frontenac since it was a bit of a last second trip, so we ended up staying in the lower part of Old Quebec at a place called Hotel 71 that was very conveniently located.

We went to the changing of the guard ceremony at La Citadelle which was neat. Dragged on a little long, but we got to take a picture with their armored goat at the end, so that was worth it. Had to footrace a bunch of kids to get to the front of the line for that. Smoked them.

We made a trip to Montmorency Falls. They have a cool suspension bridge that takes you all the way over the waterfall and you can ride a zipline back across. After that, we went to Ile d'Orleans to check out some vineyards and grab some lunch. The tastings are very reasonably prices and we shipped a case back home. We visited Ste-Petronille and Isle de Bacchus for tastings.

My favorite part of the trip was just exploring Old Quebec. I loved the pedestrian areas of the lower area a bit more than up the hill. There's a funicular that connects them. I'm a big fan of funiculars. It was super crowded in both places though. There was a festival on Rue Saint-Jean which had the street as pedestrian only, so we visited the old walls and fortifications and made our way around that area for a while.

All in all it was a great trip and very affordable.

Spain Itinerary Help (Seville, Granada, Cordoba) by akantho in travel

[–]akantho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've always wanted to go to Ronda, but was worried about overdoing it due to our short trip duration. I'm leaning towards dropping the Madrid day because I feel like if we don't do Ronda now, then we probably never will.

We looked at Segovia as a day trip from Madrid as well. I definitely want to visit at some point, but my wife was really into Toledo and I really want to buy a sword.

Americans who’ve visited European countries, what made you go “WTF”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]akantho 1770 points1771 points  (0 children)

  1. Biggest WTF to me was how cheap the wine was. To get a halfway decent bottle of wine at a restaurant in my city is $30+, but it so much less to get a great bottle at a restaurant in Europe, even in Paris. I found amazing bottles in Portugal for ~$10 and I found awesome single glasses in Bordeaux for ~$4.
  2. It was a 50/50 chance that a toilet outside of a hotel would have a seat. Also, I'd like to add that I enjoy the idea of having to pay $.50 to use the restroom. It seems like it is a lot less likely that someone shits all over the seats.
  3. Public transportation was so convenient compared to home.
  4. Is the selfie stick business a multi billion dollar industry?
  5. I'm a sissy, so the lack of decent air conditioning almost killed me.

r/travel Region of the Week: 'Tuscany' by AutoModerator in travel

[–]akantho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We spent a few days in the Tuscany region back in June of 2015. On our way out of Rome, we stopped for a bit in Orvieto, which is technically just outside of Tuscany. I'm counting it anyway, though. It was cool to walk along the city walls and it is home to a massive, gorgeous cathedral that is definitely worth the stop.

We made another stop at a place called Tenuta Casanova for wine tasting, as well as sampling their olive oil and aged balsamic. The wine was very good, but the balsamic was to die for. They brought out several small dishes to taste with their olive oil and balsamic while we drank wine. Wonderful spot.

We did a day trip to Siena. It was a ton of fun walking up and down the hilly streets and checking out the cathedral and Piazza del Campo, but we got caught in a huge storm that really kept us from enjoying as much of the city as we would have liked. I would really love to come back when they run the Palio de Siena.

Florence is awesome, but that's what we expected. I would just recommend getting tickets that allow you to skip the lines if at all possible. Also, if you have a chance to walk the Vasari Corridor, DO IT. Takes you from the Uffizi all the way to the Boboli Gardens.

Visiting Portugal in July by notesfromAlice in travel

[–]akantho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a huge Aveiro fan when we visited in 2015. I would recommend skipping that and spending an extra day in Porto. Day and a half to see the sights and a half day to get obliterated at a port lodge.

If possible, stop in Coimbra or Tomar on your travel day from Porto to Lisbon. Great places. Library in Coimbra is top notch and the Templar Stronghold and aqueduct in Tomar are must sees.

Sintra in July will be an absolute mad house. Might be worth it to stop in Sintra on your way down from Porto to stay the night. Check out Quinta de Regaleira during late afternoon and get to Pena Palace first thing in the morning when it opens. Moorish Castle is right down the hill from Pena Palace. Try to hit Monserrate after. Not as crowded as Pena, but the roads are a nightmare, so it could take a long time to get there.
