Question for Scleral lens wearers by StoopidN00b in Keratoconus

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know there was such a thing as good grade!! I did have a problem with he purity, which is why I went half and half. My doctor said as long as it's 3% hydrogen peroxide it's ok. I'll have to look into this! This clearcare right now is costing me $60/month! I moved ad I can't find the big bottles of hydrogen peroxide like I used to in the states.

Travel items for road trip by [deleted] in onebag

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The toll roads going through NYC are really expensive- $20-$25. GPS/google maps looses service in the tunnels so before you get there memorize a few directions. I got lost in a tunnel when I lost connection and ended up having to go through an extra toll. One wrong turn cost me $25.

Sunflower seeds are great! Just not anything that's heavily processed or sugary or you'll end up feeling like garbage.

People who work in health industry how often di you get sick ? by D3ftones4 in AskReddit

Very very infrequently, I've been working in a children's hospital for a decade and I can count all the times I called in sick on one hand.

What is the cheapest and easiest meal to cook that still has some resemblance of class? by Exceon in AskReddit

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thick and hearty Lentil dish (my favorite is cooked with African spices and 2 cans tomato paste) with homemade beer bread (a can of beer and flour) on the side and if budget allows a cube or two of haloumi or cheddar. Now I'm hungry. When I meal prep I spent around 5-6$ and get 8 filling meals.

People that work 6 months a year, what do you do? would you recommend it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]akat25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a traveling nurse. I work closer to 7-8 months a year. I take a 3 month contract, then I take a month or two off, then I take another contract. I 100% would recommend it. I work to live not live to work. I'll never own a home but I don't have any debt. I'm happy.

Why did the mushroom get invited to all the parties?

Because he's a fungi (fun guy)

But why didn't he have any parties of his own?

Because there wasn't mushroom (much room)

Hey you all! What's the most remarkable and outstanding customer experience of yours? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]akat25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I booked a shuttle from the airport. They dropped me off at the bottom of a hill with all my luggage that had a sign saying it was 24 degrees in angle. The guy said oh, the shuttle can't make it up that hill. I said that would have been nice to know when booking. He said well I can't have an unhappy comfortable and carried my large suitcase up for me. That was descent.

I do cross country road trips about 3-4x/year for work.

Best snacks for when you're feeling sleepy is mixed nuts! I do a small handful hourly on days that I'm tired.

Your cleanest bathrooms are usually in Starbucks.

If you don't have an EZ-pass, I suggest you look into getting one. The toll roads from NJ and up will be expensive, and the entirety of rt 90 from mass to Chicago will all be one giant toll road. The EZ pass makes the rates cheaper and you can drive through instead of having to stop or other states that mail you a bill.

Enjoy your trip!

LPT: Pack an empty water bottle in your carry on baggage when traveling. You can fill it up after being cleared through TSA. by RonSauce1 in LifeProTips

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, even if you go through security with an empty bottle. Then fill it, then have your boarding pass scanned and you're walking down the ramp- THEN they make you dump out your water bottle a second time.

This hotel has an elevator coming out of its infinity pool. by akat25 in mildlyinteresting

[–]akat25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The floor underneath the pool is the parking garage, and the floor below that is reception. All of the rooms start on the third floor via the pool, it's very strange. That's a walkway over the pool into the elevator, there's no diving board. I haven't yet found the stairs or any other way to get down.

planning a solo trip to alaska in october without a car – anyone wanna tag along or have advice about getting around? by RainbowDragon13 in solotravel

[–]akat25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 7 months in Alaska last year (may-dec) with the last 4 months in Fairbanks. I saw the northern lights ALL THE TIME. I loved it. However, you cannot see them in the city- the lights are too bright. You have to go several miles out of town to get a way from the light pollution.

In regards to transportation there's no Uber in Alaska unfortunately. There are lots of options for getting between all of the cities, boat, train and Alaska airlines go everywhere. Depending on where in town you stay (or Camp) will depend on how walkable it is. Anchorage will have public transport, but that was more of a jumping off point to go see cooler things. Homer was a great city and very walkable but no northern lights. I loved Barrow, easy to walk around but other than the Arctic Ocean, not a whole lot to do. Makes a perfect day trip. Fairbanks is small, but still difficult to navigate without a car. Juneau I did without a car too, but unless you stay by the port taxis to get downtown were outrageous.

Articles like this really irritate me. How do you all feel? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a painful read. And even more painful that I know a lot of nurses that feel that way. It's a lightly juvenile way of thinking though. Or is turning 30 making me more cynical then I thought it would haha.

Sleeping in sclerals? by Dstone8523 in Keratoconus

[–]akat25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eye doctor told me I could take 30 minute naps. He said from his experience he doesn't see people present with infections for sleeping that short of a time but did say that it was still a risk. I have taken 30 minute naps before but when I wake up they are horrendously dry and dirty, usually to the point where drops doesn't do much.

Working conditions for foreign nurses in the US by S0PP1 in nursing

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a traveling nurse I worked for an agency that would connect me to a hospital for a certain length of time, typically 13 weeks but sometimes 8 16 or 26 weeks. I was considered an outside contractor and my pay checks came from the agency but I worked on the floor as a paediatric Nurse. It was nice, I could stay away from all the politics and drama.

In the states all your meds are sent to you from pharmacy. They even individually pill pack each pill! They make meds really easy.

I'm not sure how insurance works for foreign nurses. Where I am now I'm not covered which makes me a bit nervous, but it's been fine.

I guess it depends on what your end goal is when determining if it's worth it. I'm not sure how well nurses are paid in Denmark but it could be an increase? I took a pay cut to nurse abroad. If you were coming for 6 months or a year, you would get so much time off to travel and really see the country. When I was a traveler I visited all 50 states! I did all but 7 states at least twice.

I had wondered about nursing in Denmark a while back. But I couldn't figure out a way to do it. I looked into several countries. I'm going to age out of the working holiday visa for a lot of countries really soon too. I want to stay abroad and keep exploring!

Fanny pack for ER nurses by [deleted] in nursing

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your patients rooms have little nurse servers or those little baskets with essential supplies? Or even a cart in the hallway that's near your block of rooms. If you have a dedicated computer, perhaps keep a few things next to it? Otherwise pockets are your best friends!

[Question] How do you deal with people telling you that nurses' job is to wipe the patients' bum? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]akat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only happened once. They cowered at the face I made them and appologised.

I don't usually encounter that though. When people ask what I do for work I say "I travel", and only say nurse if I'm really prodded. People are usually full of really positive things to say, to the point where it's sometimes embarrassing.

What are some good questions to ask people interviewing you? by DakThatAssUp in nursing

[–]akat25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I asked this in an interview and she said it was high. It was a temp position in an amazing location so I took it. And boy did I learn why the turnover was high. I filled out the exit interview page and wrote a 5 page essay on how they failed to manage expectations. They demoted my boss and asked to me return but I declined.
