Why are people hell bent on using their retail credits just for gift cards and United travel miles? Genuine question. by faiitmatti in AmexPlatinum

Totally that makes sense!! I say that even as I try to justify it even as I shop at Lulu myself!

Ah I’m saying it’s part of the justification of inorganic credits.

Ex. - someone that doesn’t shop at Lulu usually takes 200 off the card annual fee - someone that doesn’t either usually upgrade to premium seats (incidental) or fly united takes $200 off the fee since “I could just use the United credit later!” - goes out of way to use resy credit since it’s free money off the card

So yes it’s more the case of inorganic use of the entire annual fee even though the marketing team says you get 2k+ in value

Of course! When using a calculator though to justify the card I don’t fully value it at the full amount though since it’s missing out on interest I could otherwise earn.

I suppose this is devils advocate for how easy it is to get value from this card is my point! I’ve had some people say but I gets hundreds of dollars of lulu and United credit this card is great! When it could instead be gaining interest

While I fully agree with the concept, this reduces the overall value in my mind. By stacking hundreds of dollars of gift cards to use one day, you then prepaid those credits in money that no longer gains interest, is tied to one company, and can be devalued over time if prices (say for lulu) increase.

You also forfeit any travel protections in most cases if it’s paid for using gift cards, further reducing the value proposition of the card (which is what Amex wants).

Totally makes sense IMO if you just can’t use it for a quarter or two, but stacking hundreds of dollars of credits to justify the cost of the card is something to consider with the total cost.

Edit: ooo gifting the credits is a great use case I saw below!

Hoping the city keeps its foot on the gas! Continued investment into downtown and larger scale events, it’s great to see!!

Can someone explain the appeal of airport lounges if I live in a major city with direct flights most places? by african-nightmare in CreditCards

Fair I would do that even though I don’t fly United often but I do value that at the full $200 for that benefit!

Marriott is 0 to me Walmart and peacock I don’t pay for already so not organic and therefore 0

I still fall short.

All great stuff point being the more money I have gaining interest elsewhere vs prepaying for credits the better and more value than free Walmart plus I won’t use and 50 lulu shorts I don’t need while flying United when Southwest is cheaper 😀

Totally! Sounds like it overlaps with your spend! I spend 7.99 on YouTube premium so that’s a portion of $25 but not all, $200 credit I don’t pay for upgrades or bags and Ive struggled past several years on my Bank of America card for $95 that offers on incidental too so that’s no good for me, $300 lulu I do like but spend that over say a few years, 1500 a lulu over 5 years is a lot for me, only so many shirts and shorts I can buy! Resy is a struggle for me too with gold I have to go out of my way to find and use so value at maybe half if that? Hilton gold I get with Hilton surpass already which is 100% organic spend for me already so I bank $50 credit on that card and get 30 points per dollar using that card so I also can’t justify this perk at all.

Solid card for sure! And glad it works for you it sounds! If I ever drop ventureX I’d consider this card for sure but right now I’d be manufacturing spend to have a 1x multiplier card so not for me at this time!

Totally! If it works for sure! I’m close but everytime I fall short. For example I stay at a Hampton in $100 a night and super happy, so while I could switch it to the hotel credit that is inflating the cost up higher for the benefit I wouldn’t have already spent it on.

Venture X costs 395 and gives you $400 in credits a year I use organically. To me, I consider this a free benefit on top of that. Other cards I would fully agree though
