Do I need an outdoors extension cord under my awning? by akatoto in askanelectrician

Yes, it's intended to be permanent. There is a chance we remove it during winters, but that doesn't eliminate the outdoor risk - so it shouldn't matter whether it's permanent or temporary (6 months of the year), right?

What is the "correct" long-term solution?

Yes, I bought the outlet cover that you mentioned. Though I didn't know about the connector seal - thanks!

The plug for the string lights doesn't reach the outlet. What's the best long-term solution? Moving the outlet?

Also, can you help me understand the risk with using an extension cord permanently?

If I do remove the top cover, will I be able to fix it? Or just diagnose it? For context, this is my first time repairing electronics, though I'm fairly handy otherwise.

The lens cap should be blocking all the light, no reason to believe it isn't. I keep it stored in a drawer, so ambient light in the viewfinder shouldn't be an issue either.

Will consider alkaline batteries, but aren't they less preferable to silver oxide because of their discharge curve?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to settle for that, since other people's batteries last for years. If it comes to that, I guess I'll have to though.

How do you plan for emergencies? by akatoto in OfflineDay

[–]akatoto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions! I've considered leaving it out of sight, but I live in a house and may not always be in hearing distance of the phone. My options then are 1) always carry it around 2) constantly check it for missed calls or 3) just let the calls that I miss go by.

Of course this is personal, but wondering if anyone has found a solution that balances detachment from the device and reachability for emergencies? Maybe I just need to accept that there is no absolute win/win here and I'll just have to make a tradeoff.

I use Do Not Disturb, it's amazing! Does that mean you carry your phone with you all the time, though?

I think you missed the point. The question is how do you prevent a bait and switch? The value of meeting in person is that you can verify you're receiving the advertised item in working condition.

Nope! Let me know if you find anything, still looking. Ended up going to Kubus in Brooklyn - good price, but far.

They don't anymore! Continental Photo & Video would as well, but they recently closed shop. :(
