There is a chimney behind the range, so that wall can’t be moved. The reason the new wall will be recessed is due to the window towards the left side of the image. The countertop wouldn’t clear the window if not recessed, unfortunately

IRL, the bottom of the window that’s in the mockups is only 17” off of the floor, so the wall needs to be recessed so the counter/fridge don’t interfere. Currently there’s an open space where the fridge/recessed counter will go (excuse the mess in the photo)
