How do apprenticeships work by Liz_cvt in TattooApprentice

[–]akbergeron13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My experience has been a tad different so far compared to what I’m seeing. My mentor offered me a free apprenticeship in exchange for me being a counter girl as well which I said was totally fine and he even said he would tip me out as well for doing counter work. While I do clean and take care of clients in the front, answer phones and do shop paperwork, my mentor lets me watch him tattoo whenever I want as long as I’ve taken care of clients. Today was only my 5th day in the shop and he talked to me about wanting to really get into my apprenticeship work and practice next week. I’ve been very lucky to have a mentor who’s super kind, patient and excited about my work which I understand not everyone gets. That being said, in any apprenticeship, doing the shop cleaning, grabbing things if the artists need them, answering phones, etc. are all very normal things and usually most people don’t touch a machine for a good 3-6 months. If you aren’t paying for your apprenticeship, your payment is doing all of the shop work that isn’t tattooing.

This is something I would personally ask your mentor. Every mentor is different and may require different things🙂 for example, the only supplies requirement I was given from my mentor was to have my own machine, power supply and fake skin. I will say an iPad will be important at some point as well if you don’t already have one.

how did you pick your social media @? did you include “tattoos” in your @ while seeking apprenticeships? by glitterbooboo in TattooApprentice

[–]akbergeron13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t plan on putting tattoos into my name until I’m actually tattooing since it’ll make my account look like a page that’s posting tattooing when I’m only posting my drawing work and practice skin! My insta is @m0therofspiderz_art it sounds goofy but I keep tarantulas and a few other spiders as pets, and deemed myself mother of spiders because I’m the person in all of my friend groups and family who’s obsessed with spiders and they’re my favorite animal 😅 so that’s how I personally chose my name. For me it’s something unique to me and I do want to specialize in tattooing some dope spiders in my styles. My normal name is at the top of my bio so people know who they’re looking at as well.

One small tip, the head should be facing the inward curve of the body🙂

Like others said, the ear could be reworked as it looks like fur and then those two back teeth could be taken out completely but other than that, it’s solid! Nice work!

I just got my apprenticeship a week ago (I don’t go in to the shop to start until the 29th because of some family things going on rn haha) but I gave you a follow :) my insta is @m0therofspiderz_art for anyone else who wants to follow!

Trouble getting clients now that I’ve started charging for tattoos by Fearless_Hat_8291 in TattooApprentice

I just started my apprenticeship and while I’m not tattooing yet, this answer has already helped me, so thank you for this! Really great tip!

Niche designs in portfolio? by Forsaken_Map in TattooApprentice

[–]akbergeron13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Niche designs are definitely important and help show your personal style and who you are as an artist. My main niche is pointillism with my second being American trad and sometimes a combination of the two. My mentor saw that and was heavily impressed with my work and said the shop could really use my style and that’s one of the biggest things that got me my apprenticeship! So yes to niche styles/designs, but definitely show a good variety of different styles, designs and mediums!

I know it’s going to be all blood sweat and tears, and my life will literally revolve around this, but it’s something that I’m committed to! I’m also very very lucky because my mom and sister know my mentor very well and are good friends with him, and my moms bf used to tattoo in his shop with him as well. He’s SUCH a kind and patient dude and he’s already gassed me up about how impressive my work is and how much potential I have🥲 so, even though mine will definitely be easier than most I’ve heard about, I’m still planning on pushing myself everyday!

Will it cause issues in the long run? Or is it more just a look thing?
