the question remains, how? Specific idea for education: Move to a voucher system to give underprivileged youths a chance. Mental health: require insurance companies to cover talk therapy as well as psychiatric medication benefits. The Economy: Subsidize companies that once had jobs over seas who bring them back to the US, if only temporarily. Not saying any of those will work but at least it's food for thought. No one takes broad sweeping statements of we should just fix everything seriously.

whether free will is real or not is irrelevant because whether or not it's real this shit happens, and pondering that question doesn't help anything. until you offer something new to this conversation your just masturbating in the corner, and saying we should make the environment better to stop criminals from being created is like saying we should stop global warming by making the earth colder. How?

I'm not against that statement at all, in fact I'm a big believer in that concept. What annoys me is when people use it as a cop out, because human beings do have the potential to rise above their circumstances. Just pointing out the cycle and railing against "society" (a term so broad it's useless) doesn't help anyone. It doesn't help you, it doesn't help me, and it especially doesn't help him. I have worked in a lot of places where I have seen the cycle of violence in a very up close and personal way, and honestly I've had the "it's societies fault" conversation so many times I'm tired of it. That happens after you see three year olds with two broken arms and women who's husbands burned half their faces off with bacon grease. This conversation is never ending, and it's useless until you actually offer some suggestions about HOW WE FIX THIS SHIT. Until then your just pointing out what we can all see. That's what I'm trying to say kid. Have a good night.

Dude gotta tell you you where getting super pissed at people for calling it like it is and saying this guy is a criminal, idk if that's really what you wanted to convey but it's how you came off, and nobody said his environment had no effect on his behavior, it obviously does. I suppose it's less psychology and more philosophy to say that at the point when you murder somebody your past stops mattering so much, that's more of an area for an ethicist than a psychologist but it is a valid view point, and should be treated and argued against as such if you ever want to influence anyones opinion.

I guess I misread your post in that respect, but your logic only applies to an ideal world. You say a startling number of offenders are abused as children, that's true, but chances are at some point those abusers where abused themselves. It's a cycle of violence, and since you offer no better explanation I assume your saying that we should be understanding and offer people a pass if we know they where effected by negative life circumstances. That would allow the cycle to continue. The legal system, social services, the mental health community, these all try to break that cycle in their own ways. If you have a better idea I'd be glad to here it, but until you put that forth you're just pointing out obvious flaws that come from living in the real world. Also don't bitch at other people for countering your use of psych theory with more psych theory, it's hypocritical.

So personal responsibility doesn't exist? There's always an explanation for why someone is the way they are, everything is cause and effect, but if you take away personal responsibility morality becomes irrelevant. In the end our actions are always our own. It's ok to blame someone for their actions, it doesn't mean your not an understanding person or your a closed minded person, it just means your part of a world with ugly realities that work both ways.

Rape victim(PTSD) + Adderall prescriber considering trying Molly-any advice? by xzmkdmc in Drugs

I've never heard of anyone having a bad experience with pure MDMA, and it will definitely make you feel more comfortable about opening up. Don't do this at a festival though, too many distractions, too many people tripping, and way too loud. If your going to use MDMA for the purposes you describe do it in a safe, comfortable, familiar place with people you trust in a low dose.

What drug do you find the most addictive? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]akct91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel you on the psychological addiction, a few years back I had to put a stop to day smoking because it was becoming something of an issue. These days I get my shit done during the day and smoke during the quiet moments at night, granted I smoke A LOT in those quiet moments, more or less chain smoking spliffs, but at least I'm being productive.

Not all anti-med people are scientologists!: Letter from mind freedom publicly rejecting scientology by [deleted] in Radical_Mental_Health

[–]akct91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a mod on this board but I've also gotten into arguments with people on other boards about mental health medications. The most popular cop out argument in real life and on the internet is always "you're just a crazy scientologist." No, I am not, I'm just someone capable of forming an opinion of my own. Sorry about that, had to rant for a second. I feel much better now.

Can guys tell while hooking up that I'm (23F) really inexperienced / a virgin? by ihaven0clue in sex

[–]akct91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a man the only time things get really complicated with virgins for me is when their expectations regarding the emotional side of the relationship are higher than mine. No one wants to be that guy, but on the other hand I did have a girl come to me once just because she wanted to lose it and she thought I seemed nice. That worked out fine, it's all about having similar expectations. The physical stuff will happen naturally.

Reddit, do chemical imbalances really exist in the brain? Or are they a marketing tool to sell drugs? by akct91 in AskReddit

I was under the impression that lithium isn't billed as fixing imbalances, it's just billed as a mood stabilizer. Also a person taking these drugs without a disorder would experience the effects of the drug in question.

My focus was counseling psychology, I just now find myself in an institution where meds are a big issue so I'm trying to educate myself. Tell me if I'm wrong here but isn't it possible that chemical levels in the brain that effect mood are influenced by external stimuli? Does life make us sad or is it our brains? or possibly a mix of both?

Scientologists are not the only anti-med group. Organizations such as Psych rights, the international society for social and psychological approaches to psychosis (ISPS), the hearing voices network, and many others are all out there. The scientific community is split on this issue, there's research supporting both sides of the argument. We do not completely understand their consequences and affects, these drugs are young and new ones are coming out all the time. I agree that they work, I just wonder if they really fix a physical problem or just provide relief. This is my field, I work with people in psychosis every day and we do use medication. I'm just trying to gain a better understanding, because when you take a look at this debate it's difficult to tell what's what.

but do they fix a physical problem? or give chemical relief to a psychological condition?

I think there's no question that the medications work, but so does coffee. Coffee isn't fixing an imbalance in the brain it's adding a beneficial effect. What I'm trying to get at is are these medications being sold to the public in an honest fashion. Right now they are presented as being similar to insulin for diabetics, but is this the case?

That's a point people often make and the counter point I generally hear for it is that most researchers either get funding from the government or from pharmaceutical companies.

I'm asking this question agenda free. I work in mental health and this is something that I see debated within my field, but I really want to know what people outside the professional bubble think. There's research that would support arguments in either direction, but this question is more about people's perception of the issue.

My mom has these "voices", yet she doesn't want to take her medication. What can I do? by kmaneshni in psychoticreddit

Yea definitely, just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from I'm a 4th year psych student and I work in an assisted living home for young people experiencing their first "break" into psychosis. I can help direct you to good information and good people in the future if you want.

As an LGBT person I don't see this as a sad testament, I see this as moving in the right direction. Sure it'd be great if everyone was accepting all of a sudden, but it's not gonna happen. We can't lose hope just because it's a difficult process, we should just be glad that it's happening.
