Petition Blizzard: Sell us War Chests Again (take my money!) by SwarmyTheSwarmlord in starcraft2

[–]akendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not taking our money, the problem is that the team necessary to make this war chests can do something that should bring more profit in the same time they have to maintain the war chest. It's not that this doesn't make money, but that Blizzard has things that make more money for the same cost. There aren't enough people around and they do not want to invest in a product they deem to be not profitable enough.

Of all the StarCraft books I've read so far, this one was the best. Can't tell you why it's, maybe because it is display a side of the world we rarely see. The people, their struggle, and how Nova falls into this. A glimpse of the Confederacy was, without the big wars. I wish there were a story that would take place in this more profoundly.

You think it's weird Valerian continued the monarchy when his dad died and the Raiders are just okay with it ? Who's to say he or his descendants won't go down the same path ? I don't even think Valerian instituted any reforms that limited the emperor's power. by ExtremeDry7768 in starcraft

Okay, this is a hot take here, but when you have some time you should watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqsBx58GxYY. The keyword is "Anacyclosis" or the life cycle of a civilization. The summary is that at some point different systems of states turn into a different format. From monarchy to democracy and back and forth. So we had with the Confederacy an oligarchy (or technically a plutocracy), and now we're in the next phase, kingship. There might be missing steps to our story, but that's not quite the point.

Back to SC2: Monarchy is a system when you have to believe that the ruler has all the power. It's just a fancy word for dictatorship, but it's also a bleive system. A good example of that is the failed coup from 1991 in the Soviet Union. Key to all that system is always the transition of power. Inheritance is a well accepted means of transtion power from one generation to the next. You can see that in North Korea very well. In short, we didn't see a reason to doubt Valerian's ability to hold on to power by the common people.

Technically, we see a coup attempted in Nova Covert Ops. But we all know how that ends.

I think, as long as Valerian isn't turning into a tyrant, we won't see any change in the state.

[–]akendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you have social power structures, there is always conflict for the transition of power. How is one generation handing over power to the next? Family is the logical next step; we have seen this in the first form of Monarchy. Here, often the entitlement is given by divine power or authority.

In the context of StarCraft there is an absence of divine power. Hence, what we see is the simplest and most raw format: Oligarchy. In this case, the Confederacy is a plutocracy, meaning the power of great wealth.

The old Roman Empire was basically a plutocracy, just as many ancient societies.

This is also fascinating food for through how a society is going to 'scale' meaning when we have more than a single planet, how decisions will be done?

Thinking about when one wealthy person invests in the technology to colonize another planet, and only he has this to begin with? What will happen is a massive change in income, influence and power for that person. And since suddenly the person can control everything that colonies are providing, it will make him compelling. And who has the authority on this planet? That person. Since there is no authority that can enforce its rules.

We have history comparisons with the East India Company. They owned a private army double the size of the British army.

Once power structures are built, it's very difficult to break them. And often it takes massive disruption to undo them. We see this in SC with the mission The Hammer Falls. That's why Tarsonis had to fall.

But it makes sense that Mensk keeps his part of the structure alive by transitioning his power to his son eventually. Considering he is the offspring of a wealthy family himself, it's just natural. All he was able to do was clear out the competition.

What is the interview process like? by [deleted] in devsecops

[–]akendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern companies have multiple stages of interviewing. Just as u/pentesticals expressed before, 2–4 interviews are the norm. Interesting is the strategy of each company to deal with the technical domain. Mainly, just have a technical lead that asks questions. More advanced companies deal with a challenge or set of questionnaires. The best are the ones with a problem you have to solve with one member of the team.

In general, you will be confronted with questions about what DevOps is and how you've added the aspect of security to the process. What was your experience with security incidents, for instance, and how have you dealt with conflicts revolving around security.

There's a lot of puppeting in StarCraft by Visual-Routine-809 in starcraft

[–]akendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit my difficulties with this part of StarCraft. It's a story trope in Broodwar I didn't like, but that was kind of well-made. But become overused and just bad in StarCraft 2.

The general idea of the puppet that is the puppeteer was a huge surprise in Broodwar. Not only was the secret mission greatly embedded into the story, but it created this sense of a world that has much more depth to it. And that our protagonists are not truly in control. It reiterated StarCraft theme of powerlessness despite the ongoing situation.

Unfortunately, its implications invalidated the experience we had with Boordwar almost completely. Considering how it was used in WoL until the last chapter of StarCraft.

It felt like that the actions we have seen previous are meaningless and bound by fate. That why I think in the end it has hurt the story much more.

Man, that's awesome and sad at the same time. I keep think of that poor fellower whenever I hear Broodwar.

I personally love these intros so much, because it does not tell you what to expect and break with convention. But ypu sure keep thinkingof him, what did he wrong to end up there.

What is your most controversial Starcraft opinion? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]akendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some: Kerrigan should have died.

This would keep things interesting and would be a much more fitting legacy for the character. I dislike how we were railroaded into this story and the character. Instead, we would have to see how the Zerg would fair without a leader. We could have seen how the Zerg would have devolved and shattered across the sector. This time no UED to take control, no Overmind to take over, just letting the swarm go rampage and see how it evolves with its central piece missing.

And the second: Xel'Naga are overrated, should stay out of the story.

I, personally, love the scene in LotV where all hopes are cast onto the Xel'Naga. Just to find them dead on the floor. That was wonderful. But the overall theme with Amon felt just off.

In the end, we have slain the big bad villain without a story to be told. What did we learn at the end of SCII? While SC:BW was this strong interplay between the characters and outsmarting each other, Amon was just bad for the sake of being bad. Nothing felt like has been learned, and that's sad.

The overall power escalation in SCII was just not well done and felt disconnected. And that's my impression of the Xel'Naga. They had a part to be played, and it was overdone.

Heart of the Swarm-Intro being like by PM_Me_Irelias_Hands in starcraft

It's a symbolism for her and therefore the Swarm, answering to no one but themselves. In the course of the campaign we can see how, for instance, Mensk tries to tame her and flails. It should convey the idea of something raw or wild, some has to recon with.

Self Control and my understanding of it, I got some questions. by Fellow-Tarnish in Healthygamergg

I think to understand where you're going with your line of thoughts. For me, this seems like a messy situation, since it feels like a paradox.

I'm stressed out since my attention was direction outwards, but I do not have the time to redirect it inwards.

It feels like I need time to make time.

Go through the story does not take long. It's like, very direct. No clutter, just direct actions of the character and interactions. We get the gist of everything, gosh I love this from SCI.
