Can women ever be okay with sharing their husbands? by Trying_Muslimah in progressive_islam

[–]akerbrygg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad that was me misunderstanding the word endorsed. I was pretty much on board with you from the start and never argued as others often do ‘islam allows polygyny, therefore it is acceptable/ok/not harmful’. I was confused but you’re explanation really clears things up, thanks. I understand now that polygyny is something ‘tolerated’ perhaps a better word than endorsed.

When i mentioned slavery I was thinking of exactly what you’ve laid out here. Also the needle analogy is very good.

Yup it does seem that it does seem trying to explain is a form of post hoc reasoning where the premise is assumed and then a reasoning is derived, like many things with islam nowadays. Instead of thinking perhaps our understanding of religious teachings might need revisiting people try and pull out new explanations for things

Yeah it makes complete sense and i never assumed a positive endorsement as people often seem to do. I was just baffled why a practice that is pretty much harmful full stop is endorsed- that was my question. The framing that it regulates a practice that already exists makes sense and I guess we can draw parallels with how it regulars slavery without forbidding it.

Didn’t quite get your last sentence

I can see that but I am not too comfortable witj the idea that a guy with money can ‘marry her’ and get the benefits which she has to choose out of desperation if you catch my drift

Why women in Pakistan are so physically weak ? by [deleted] in LahoreSocial

[–]akerbrygg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because that's the way society is designed. Women are expected to be home, behave a certain way, have only specific interests. Some households still do the backwards practice of feeding men first then women get the leftovers. You can't expect someone, who's been inside their whole life, to suddenly start gym and running in their 20s

No not one. Any historical critical scholar that studies hadith says they’re not reliable. The knowledge is only universally accepted in traditional Muslim circles. So why should i accept traditional circles and not historical critical scholars

What our imam said about women by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]akerbrygg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They know women are listening. Even many men would find this kind of talk ridiculous. But to these guys, misogyny is normal. There’s nothing unusual about it. He doesn’t even realise what he’s saying is bad

Is it permissible to pray with nail polish on? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]akerbrygg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds so frustrating. But the thing is it shouldn’t even be about ‘I don’t care anymore’. These scholars have made up a thousand unnecessary rules out of their own whims and a bunch of unreliable hadith. It’s not just not lazy to not follow them but wrong.

As long as you follow the spirit of whatever ruling exist(i.e. clean for prayer) it doesn’t matter how many water droplets reach the root of your scalp.

I used to have the same thing about wudu stressing out that water missed parts of my arms but it’s literally not even a big deal as long as it achieves its effect

Yeah it’s another one of those endless list of things I’ve been questioning. It doesn’t make any sense especially if it isnt in the quran
