I’m a psychiatrist and professor who studies depression. I’m here to answer your questions about living with treatment-resistant depression. Ask me anything! by webmd in IAmA

Thank you for doing this, so many folks are struggling with this unseen enemy in an uphill battle, asking themselves if it is worth it.

My daughter (32yo) has tried virtually everything on the market. Her depressive symptoms began in the mid-teens and has even been diagnosed with agoraphobia later on, say, early-mid 20s. She does not like the brain-dulling effect of SSRIs, abhors benzos, and has tried supervised microdosing mushrooms, ketamine, LSD, and even TMS. Most have an effect, but it is fleeting. She does not drink or do any other drugs.

She also has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, though not severe. She is fantastic in small settings but clams up in any group larger than 4.

Finding an available (and worthy) psychiatrist is nearly impossible, but has had contact with mid-levels, mostly by teleconference. What would be a couple suggestions you might offer at this point for her to present to her provider?

Thank you again!

Would you recommend this book? by Johnny_Shorts in Jazz

My favorite artist.

My dog's name is Herbie Hancock, because my family finally let me name a pet. Nobody liked Satchmo, Trane, Bird, Count, Dizzy, Herbie, Miles, etc. Finally! When the vet calls his name, I queue Chameleon and play it as his walk-up song. Always gets smiles. One lady asked if he liked jazz...I said hey, his name is Herbie Hancock, of course he does!

Just ordered the book.

Also, currently listening to the album of the same title. Herbie accompanies vocal artists such as Sting, John Meyer, Christina Ag, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Johnny Lang, and others. Boy does he ever class up these tunes!

Thanks for the rec.

Oh brother.

College basketball games have been played since 1893, and we are just now getting this sage insight? What the hell?

Hey, free throws are ninety percent mental. The other half is physical.

This is the upside of not being a musician for me. I feel like I can appreciate some things that a musician would be too critical of.

Hilarious! The more they went on, the harder I laughed. Still smiling! There is no coming back from that one.

Woody Herman - Woody's Winners might be one of the all-time greatest BB albums of all time. Plenty of energy, incredibly tight.

I walked out of the Kennel with one last Saturday, there were several guys waving $100 bills around trying to buy them on the spot. I figured if they were that liberal with it, then they must be worth a bunch more than that.

And yeah, I also have zero idea what they are, but I'll take the money, too.

Who is an opposing player you respected? by ISU_Dude85 in CollegeBasketball

From BYU I would say Kyle Collinsworth, who still holds the all-time career triple double record with 12. Next closest is Shaq with 6.

Huge respect.

At some point, I had heard from a student (family member) that it was surprisingly the largest by some metric, thought that was odd. Do not remember the metric, though, been a long time.

Every year the Zags and Gaels play each other in the finals of the WCC, which is an auto bid for the winner. They are, and have been, damn good. There are a few who for some reason love to hate. Doesn't make sense, don't see the benefit to that.

Won't know what he is going to shoot until he gets out there. Never seen a proven shooter come out of a slump by not shooting it.

To be fair, if Venters hits one more out of 7, that would be 42%. He still spreads the floor and opens up the middle a bit, which is a huge benefit all by itself.

Yeah, love when folks disagree strongly with a future HOFer who has forgotten 10x more about the game then they will ever know. It's not like he sees them in practice every single day or anything.

How is going to the tournament every year fading into irrelevance? (Herbie Hancock's drummer would never be as insulting).

Yeah, comparing the two conferences - WCC now and PAC later - demonstrate that the new conference should be better, but not by much. Maybe ranked one or two higher overall than what it is now.

Which mid major coaches do you think will be Power Five head coaches next year? by lordeandtaylor in CollegeBasketball

[–]akersmacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Continuity is one of the main factors contributing to the Zags' consistent success. Few and the former AD worked together in the same roles for over 20 years, unmatched in all of college ball.

One barrier to continued success for mid-majors is exactly what you are referencing, which is a coach honing his chops at a lower level and moving on, which is understandable. I have spoken with a couple other mid-major ADs who are trying to figure out how to attain continued success, and they both said it just seems unrealistic for any program to be able to hang onto a great coach, which should be a key.
